Forlorn Fishing by Magnanix

[raw]
made by Magnanix for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Overview

A game wherein you take part in the great circle of life. Once a humble ferryman, you have eschewed your need of worldly wants - and have pursued a new path in life. That, is the path of an extortionist -- not to be confused with the path of a contortionist, no. You see, you weren't making much money taking a single gold piece for each passenger, so why not plumb the depths of the river you so fondly glide over daily.

TL;DR: Kharon, Ferryman of the River Styx, starts stealing money from souls he fishes up.

Instructions

  1. You start with nothing, tehee.
  2. You are on a raft/boat/bigger boat.
  3. You can cast your fishing line by targeting with the bobber reticle (its a bobber, it bobs), and clicking.
  4. Once you nail a bite, a minigame will take place -- you move your mouse around (controlling your flying skull) to destroy those that would stop you from catching your victim... I mean, patron. 4a. If you catch a "Soul", it will be forced to be your passenger for a limited time, paying you in currency every second. 4b. If you catch "Junk", you will receive currency instantly, but not gain any over time.
  5. During the minigame, a "Chance to Catch" %age will fill. You can end the minigame early by clicking your mouse.
  6. After your normal routine trip down the River Styx (denoted by the distance meter on the bottom right on the screen), you will be presented with an option to upgrade your Rod, or Boat. -- This is particularly handy, since you start on a raft, with no rod...

Controls

Mouse only. Move it to hover over buttons. Move it to choose where to fish. Move it to move your skull in the minigame. Click it to use buttons. Click it to fish. Yea, thats pretty much it.

Bugs and Etc.

  1. The Currency indicator at the top right of the screen doesn't update until money is spent/earned for the first time.
  2. For some reason, unbeknownst to me, particles stop working when they go above 50% of the screen. This has something to do with the water shader, I just didn't have time to figure it out... ShaderGraph man, YIKES.
  3. Some of the snapshots for "Junk" are misaligned, and thus appear cut off.

Thanks & Love? I'm tired...

A massive thanks to those who tuned in over the weekend to the streams of me losing my mind. Constantly... Also, for chilling to various calming ambience/etc whilst I ... lose my MIND. Big Thanks to the following Mad Lads who I owe too much to (PATREONS!). <3 ALL MA LAAAARV 00039, Arcaine, Areathy Revane, Curious Cryptogenic, Doubtyr, Flying0strich, HomebrewedDwarf, HomebrewedDwarf, Jackal, Jinrai, Kreskowka, Kykotsu, LegionHellstrom, LilBagel, MashiroSora, Matsukaze, Nicoline, ObiWanaKnowMe, Soulflayar, VR Trapman, Wakuzo

Edits

  • Formatting (sorry, tired)
  • (Jam End + 1HR) Added V2 (Fixed a bug where you couldn't actually use the shop after the first time, also - currency updates resolved.)
  • (Jam End + 6HRs) Added V3 (Fixed all known bugs, overhauled shader for better performance - and to allow particles to work, also added a few QoL fixes for the game and it's flow).

Neat! It was pretty quiet, sort of an interesting (not in a bad way!) mood somewhat eerily apt for sailing down the river Styx. I do wish the gameplay started to become a little faster paced with the upgrades though -- as is nothing really changes except for the numbers. You can also get randomly screwed over by the RNG and not have anything catch on your line which sort of leads to a feelbad moment, wish there was some more skill/less luck involved there.

But good job on your jam game nonetheless! :)

I was wondering if you can put some screenshots with the overview? Would help with the ratings.
