Super Box Bot's Package Push by Honey Pony

[raw]
made by Honey Pony for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Screenshot

Welcome to Super Box Bot's Package Push! You must program all the robots to push packages to a finish tile. However, your robots can only execute a short, looping series of instructions! Will you be able to beat all twenty levels?

Post-compo changes (You can also download the version marked "no fixes or tweaks"):

  • Fix: Fixed a problem where clicking a lot would change levels more than once
  • Tweak: Added a slider that lets you control the robot voice SFX separately. Please rate as though you could only control their volume through the SFX slider, as that was the original case.

I like the mechanics of this a lot, though I found the robot voice extremely irritating. Also, I encountered a bug where after I beat the third level, I was taken directly to the fifth, which was rather confusing.

@zachary-barbanell Thanks for the feedback! I've fixed that glitch. There is an SFX slider, but I've added a separate robot slider if you want to disable the robot and still hear the rest of the SFX. Of course, you shouldn't change your rating as that change is post compo.

Anyway, I'm glad some part of it was enjoyable, at least!

Fun little game!
Fun fact, a few years ago, I made a very similar game for LD 27.
Your version surpasses mine in pretty much every aspect .
Good job!

Really liked it! It is really smooth and the levels are well thought, though I think it doesn't fit the theme that much.

very nice "coding" with loop like

@nicolas-kroupensky Thanks for the feedback!

But I have to say I'm a bit confused! I feel like the robots being stuck in a loop was very central to my puzzle design... can you elaborate on why it doesn't feel like it fits the theme?

Now that you mention it, it's true, hadn't looked at it that way. I'm sorry, I'm really tired right now, I should go to sleep. But yeah, I had a lot of fun and it does fit the theme xD

@nicolas-kroupensky No problem! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any interpretations of my game.

Either way I'm glad you had fun!

Wow, this is really well polished for being made in 48 hours! Great work! The audio, artwork, UI etc. All solid!

The puzzles were very thought out as well! Reminds me of Zachtronics games. I will say that I got stuck a lot earlier than I expected. Maybe I don't have what it takes to be a coder

Neat way of using the theme, a robot that loops its instructions is a nice concept for the puzzle game. Solid work!

Nice concept, it reminds me of both Sokoban and those games that teach programming to kids

It was actually really difficult for me (that is a good thing), I hope it's just because I'm tired . I will definitely come back to this and beat some puzzles.

I agree that the robot sounds were irritating, and seemed a bit out of place in such a peaceful game, even if it's about robots.

Last but not least, beautiful graphics, it looks really smooth and clean. Just a nitpick - somehow it was a bit difficult to tell which direction the robot is facing, I would probably make it more evident.

Overall, great job!

Welp I'm absolutely stumped with this one.

Great game, ♾️/♾️.
The only thing I missed was a 'reset all commands' button for when I wanted to start over from scratch.

@mvasko2: Thanks for the feedback! It's too bad the robot sounds are irritating. My motivation was a peaceful game, but also a "playful" game, and I thought the robot voices added a nice bit of zaniness. Oh well!

@lone-wolf: I'm glad you liked it! That level is definitely pretty tricky. And yeah, a clear button is probably the most obvious missing feature from the UI.

Just took a look a few hours later and I finally solved that and the rest of the puzzles. Dang lol

@lone-wolf That's quite the accomplishment! I honestly wasn't expecting anyone would be able to beat every single level! The last five or so are pretty rough.

a compo game that has settings, level selection and instruction screens. And has lovely graphics. I have tried the same idea in my game but yours looks much much better. I am a bit jealous now:P

Super polished game! The difficulty ramped up quickly, and my tiny brain couldn't keep up! Maybe include more easier levels for us simple-minded folk? I'd give this 5 stars for a Jam entry, and you did it all as a Compo. Well friggin done!

This is a very neat idea, but the difficulty curve seemed to be all over the place. I got stumped very early and almost lost interest, but I skipped that puzzle and found most of the later puzzles much easier. There wasn't much indication of which puzzles I'd finished nor whether I could do them out of order, so there was a good chance I could have given up completely after getting stuck and not seen most of the game.

Other than that, the game is interesting and well made. Good job!

@squimmy Thanks for the feedback! The other people I've seen play my game had to think no matter which level they played, so I hadn't had any notion there might be a significant problem. To be honest I'm not sure I could fix it anyways (at least without significant playtesting), but thanks for pointing it out!

Really great entry, reminds me of Opus Magnum, but more difficult! I really enjoyed your very original take on the theme, and it's very nicely polished. Puzzle games are hard to make in such a small time frame. Congrats!

I love the robot voice and the music, it's very calming especially the way it picks up when you win! I love the little robot announcer telling me that was a 'good choice' on the level. The levels themselves have a really well done difficulty curve for an LD game and the game itself is extremely polished and looks great! I would have loved the ability to insert commands but that's a minor thing. I really loved this little game! I got stuck on level 12 sadly :stuck_out_tongue: I'll be back to try and figure it out later though! This is one I can definitely see myself playing again! The level transitions are extremely satisfying as well! This seems like a complete game to me - good job!

oooh, this looks very polished for a compo entry! O:

Not that great in these kind of puzzles, but I appreciate the level select screen a lot so that I had a chance to see more advanced levels :D

Got stuck on "Destructive Interference". A more gradual introduction of not just mechanics, but also strategies, would be nice.

23. Oct 2020 · 15:44 UTC
@seurimas Thanks for the feedback!

Honestly though I'm not sure how I could introduce mechanics any slower. I feel like the possibility space for "Destructive Interference" is so small after you've played "Foamy Conundrum" that it really isn't possible to make it more straightforward.

Is it possible that you skipped a level by accident by double clicking? (Would only apply if you downloaded the no fixes version)

@honey-pony Just checked and that's not the case. The problem might be that you introduce two new mechanics back-to-back, with synergy expected immediately. Level 4 you learn about foam. Level 5 you learn about multiple robots and have to have them work together to accomplish one goal with what you just learned in Level 4. If some multi-robot levels, not requiring foam, were moved before "Foamy Conundrum", that might help.

23. Oct 2020 · 17:06 UTC
@seurimas Well thanks for the specifics! I can definitely see how having one multi-robot level before Level 5 could be a good idea. I am honestly pretty happy with the levels I had in the compo version, but I guess it's always good to think about how to improve.

@sharks I had meant to respond to your comment but just now got around to it, whoops!

Anyways, I'm really glad somebody liked the robot sound effects, I was somewhat disappointed when the only comments I had gotten on them was that they were irritating. I'm glad you found the difficulty curve reasonable and the levels enjoyable. Thank you for the very kind feedback!

First of all I'd like to say that the quality of the game was really really good, considering it was a compo game. Really well done!

Now coming to the gameplay, I liked the puzzles in the game, simple to understand and challenging as well. Though I wasn't able to finish all of the levels, as I'm pretty bad with puzzle games. Other than that, I really liked the music and art of the game. It was relaxing and pleasing to the eyes. In my spare time, I will be finishing this game up. I enjoyed it a lot. And considering the fact that it was made in compo, I am truly amazed. Great job!!! :)
