The Little Adventure for Slime by mimusangel

[raw]
made by mimusangel for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

screen2.png Hi ! We are a group a friends who like to make games. Also we're french, please pardon our english.

Mimus at the code and level design on Unity, Nephelias at 3d modeling on Blender, and Lukein at 3d modeling on Blender and some textures and icons on paint. (do not judge too quickly guys!) We didn't make the sounds, music and the water texture ourselves.

This time around we began slowly, picking up an idea to develop : A sidescroll 3d platformer !

You'll play as a little slime who needs to return to his home. The poor little slime lost slimy parts you'll have to gather on your way to recover some capabilities. Like spliting in two, jump or walljump to name a few. We recommend to use arrow keys to move, it is way easier.

Programs we used: - Unity - Blender - Paint. I swear it's looking good. - Audacity just to cut out sounds from source.

Control: (if you got the bonuses to use them) - Left / Right Arrow: Move to Left or Right - Up / Down Arrow: Spiked mode to attack enemies - Space: Jump - Tab: Split slime - Ctrl: Join slime (In proximity) - Mouse Click: Change slime you control - C: On Ground Transform into Cube, in Air Transform into Anvil - V: Pancake mode to plane

Sources: - Water texture: https://www.deviantart.com/berserkitty/art/Seamless-Cartoon-styled-Water-Texture-743787929 - Sounds : https://opengameart.org/content/atmospheric-interaction-sound-pack - Music : https://opengameart.org/content/pack-of-loopable-game-music - Slime sound : https://opengameart.org/content/40-cc0-water-splash-slime-sfx!

Patch: (After Deadline) - Corrected Controls - Reworked Jump - Reduced Animation Time - Simplified The Wall Jump Tower

Really nice! I like how you introduce the different mechanics through puzzles and how they all work together. The background art was also super pretty.
The only thing I can critizise is that there are no check points (as far as I can tell) and that I had to restart from the beginning after making good progress. Other than that, solid work!

@syrapt0r Thanks! Yup, there is no checkpoint. We were wondering during development but decided not to put any to stick with the theme. Start with nothing, restart with nothing as well !

I really like the art and the music. Fun concept. I had some problems getting the controls to work. Like they were non-responsive at times. Do you have to hit ctrl or tab many times for them to work? Nice puzzle concept!

Really cool, specially the morphing.
You could improve the controls (the character physics)

@attala @bozarre We know that there are bugs with the controls, but after all the tests we did it does not really impact the game, even if sometimes it's complicated to control, but we currently have not find a way to solve all its bug and it was more acceptable than a version we had done earlier in the day. We are happy to have worked on the blends shape and have placed in the center of our gameplay. Thank you for your feedback.

Very nice, I really liked how you taught the player as the game progresses. The movement was a bit buggy though.

I really enjoyed the aesthetic of this game, the 2.5d, low poly, very colorful and bright. The controls are a bit unresponsive, which makes some of the jumps difficult. And I would have really liked a checkpoint system, I was unable to clear the water obstacle, which would cause me to lose all of the progress up to that point.

The game is full of cool ideas, i wish it has more puzzles and utilisationof double or triple slimes ! The actual double jump and wall jump are really not precise and plateform fells frustrating to me, we can't control the slime mid-air :(
The game has a ton of content and cool modelisations !

I am having an issue with all these controls: double jump, block, split, merge, anvil (maybe others?). In french to devs for simplicity: je suis obligé de bourriner la touche pour espérer déclencher l'opération en question et la chance est très faible, du coup je n'ai pas réussi à passer la partie avec l'enclume. Peut être une question de `FixedUpdate` vs `Update`?

Might have been unlucky with my machine, but ther than that I loved the graphics, the theme fit, the mood and the ideas! Congrats guys :)

@blint6 On utilise le Fixed Update, au début on utiliser le Update mais on avais encore plus de bug de contrôle, comme le double saut qui s’exécutait illogiquement en même temps que le saut...

Using the fixed update, the beginning of the page use, update, but more control bug, like the double jump that ran illogically at the same time as the jump ...

I'm sorry, but I got quite stuck on the double jump part. I thought it would be tap space in the air, but that didn't seem to trigger it? Also, the text on some of the tutorial parts went too fast, and I had to come back to this page to get all of the info. I really liked how you handled the incremental powerups though, it sounds like there was a lot more that I didn't uncover.

Nice little game, I got some difficulties with the control, but I got some satisfying moment when I transformed into an anvil and it worked :) Pour les contrôles normalement c'est en Update, le FixedUpdate est pour la physique uniquement (coucou les français)

I am both agree and disagree with you for the controls, because often we are told the controls are done in the update but the use of velocity in the FixedUpdate, off using the controls I set Velocity to have total control over it. I do not think it's "normally", since it has redundant Input bug in the update and input bugs that do not run in the FixedUpdate. After I think I still have a lot of gap on the use engine unity, that's why I made game jam, I learn a lot like that

The game is nice, I really like the split and shapeshifting part. Nice environment too. Good job! Altough not having a checkpoint when introducing the wall jump mechanic was a bit harsh!

08. Oct 2019 · 11:57 UTC

I like the game design. The Artstyle is alo really nicely done. Could have used some anti aliasing too make it look even nicer. I had a lot of problems with the controlls tho. I had to press tab and controll at least 20 times before the merge or split happened...

The aesthetic is simple and well fitted. I'll not mention the bugs that have already been quoted in previous comments, so otherwise the game is very good. Perhaps with animations and some dynamic element as a miscellaneous it would have been cooler, but still, good work fellas! :D

I did not understand the anvil part. I was not able to break through anything I found on the map.
Other than that, it had some cool mechanics and made me feel a little bit smart when I used them correctly.

As many have said, the controls are not that great. Sometimes the keys don't even register and you have to spam them to get through. I do think some animations could be a bit faster to make it smoother, but there has be something on the coding side that is the culprit here.

How frustrating to move by small jump. I was like "Ok, so now I need to move juuuuust a little bit and... #!%". I think that moving like a snail would have been strange, but it can work for a slime. Good game anyway, but a music a little bit to short (or too repetitive idk)

The idea is very good. The amount of different commands makes gameplay a little difficult and not everything works exactly as it should. Something that bothers me is the lack of checkpoint, dying and having to come back early is complicated. With a little more polish in the gameplay is a very interesting game.

I like the idea of the game, it has potential.

Sadly I got really frustrated by the controls. Generally the double jump, split and cube/anvil transformation buttons sometimes work, but mostly dont or only while hammering them. It feels like you are only processing one button press at a time (no jumping or splitting while moving etc). Additionally all the controls are pretty awkward to keep your hands on at the same time (tab, space and control)

Make sure that you check all buttons down in the runs of the update/fixed update functions and if you have problems with the same button press triggering in multiple runs of the update function try using Input.GetButtonDown since that only returns true in the frame that the button was pressed.

I also got weirdly stuck in walls and jumping felt very floaty. Still I like the general concept.

It seems you got already comments on the controls already, so I will not push this further. I loved the game, the song was really fun since the slime bounces in the same rhythm, and the mechanics were really interesting. I would love to see more of this if you guys ever feel like continuing the project and fixing the controls haha
Lukein
14. Oct 2019 · 03:39 UTC
@hcursino We discussed that a few days after release actually. @mimusangel did a rework of the controls and on this new build it was clearly better, but even after re-reading the rules, it was unclear if we could post a reworked version, on this page. I saw people making post-release versions of their games, but idk. Feels kinda cheating, in a way.

We got 3days to make a game, we did our best in this time frame, there are some bugs. Feels bad, but that's the way it is. And it also means we got things to improve for our futur projects and entries.

15. Oct 2019 · 14:31 UTC
@mimusangel just tried the patch and could go as far as the 4th slime split! I'm happy to have seen the rest of your work, thanks for the patch! :) Controls are now usable although still a bit hard I think: the walk animation does mini jumps that interferes with the actual jump. I would say that having this animation as only cosmetic (and not affecting physics) would have been perfect, but I guess it's complicated! Also, after I died, the movement acceleration became crazy, like I could move super fast in the air, even from the beginning (even when restarting the game)! Maybe it's my machine, but this was strange.

Anyway, I appreciate that you worked based of the feedback we gave and I could appreciate your work much more, so thanks! You must have learned a lot from this experience :)

15. Oct 2019 · 15:30 UTC
@blint6 First thing first: Thanks for giving a second chance to our little game! It means a lot!

For the animation part, as far as I know it is all physic based. Hence some weird behaviours. This time around we wanted to experiment with blendshapes. (the slime morphing into different shapes and forms) So I had to learn things during the jam. Not much time left to put into rigging and animating, then. (Plus, it is a skill I have yet to master too.)

But we'll take this into account for futur projects. Another thing we figured out during this jam is that our games aren't enough "juicy". Let's just say our next game will be way better!
