Life On Mars by Yorsh

[raw]
made by Yorsh for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

You are a martian. Try to keep the human rover alive.

LifeOnMars_Gameplay

Tips : - You loose if you are spotted by the humans or if the rover breaks for good (which happens if you don't repair it in time). - The longer you last (score in top right corner), the better you do. - Rocks can hide you from the rover, but you can't hide from satellites.

Controls :

  • Move with arrow keys or WASD.
  • Repair by going near the failure then press space.

Really cool, novel concept but easy to understand. The sound effects were great, and the visuals were nice.

Easy to understand (once you read the instructions) and the web version works fine.

Could use a little more depth, but hey, it's 48 hours.

The sounds and animations are very well done.

Played the HTML version and honestly I didn't notice any graphics issues you mentioned? Regardless this is funny! I never thought about how absurd it would be to expect one of those rovers to be able to find life if the life didn't want it to see it. Audio was hilarious! That static sound behind the voice was nice too, unlike some games where it is harsh to hear that was actually very easy on the ears. Great job overall

@jpv Yeah I agree, it's probably not too much a matter of time, but more a matter of missing the good idea gameplay wise at the start.

@matt2728 hmm maybe it turned out ok, I tried to fix it in a hurry before submitting so I wasn't sure. There is still kind of an ugly yellow-ish tint to the scan effects but if it's all that went wrong it's fine. Thanks for your feebback I'll remove the scary warning.

Glad you liked it !

I had a great time . i like the theme very much, the mecanics are easy to understand, the gameplay is smooth and it gets challenging really fast.

Graphics and audio are very funny, the mecanincs are easy to understand and fun, albeit a bit frustrating with some combinations of events looking impossible to overcome.
Great job !

Loved it! The audio really enhanced the game and I love the concept of an alien who wants to help humans but can't be caught. Great work!

Ok this is actually hilarious and very well made. Also... WTF ! WAS THAT A BIRD'S SHADOW ? xD

The sound work is also amazing !

The only complain I have is.... what is this debug pink triangle at the start ? :O

@sokette Hey that's a satellite ! I should have included a voice line about this now that I think about it.

No idea what's this pink triangle you are talking about. Pink is the color when a material couldn't load in Unity, so i'm guessing something is incompatible with your browser or it's just a one time thing that failed to load for some reasons.

Great game. Fun combination of 2D and 3D - and it works. Non-trivial implementation of scanning, pretty unique. Nice fitting the theme.. and I really like it. And yeah, I sometimes feel I am being punished by the game, being put in situation with no chance of overcoming it, but whatever, it works, can be balanced later, jam is short a this is inspiring in a way what all is possible - being a compo entry I am quite impressed what all is packed in.

Day 28! I think I was expecting an ending! I really enjoyed this -- a strangely relaxing slow pace.

Hilarious take on the stealth genre, the blend between 2D and 3D graphics and the scanning effect are eye candy and the audio is top notch, the cute animation when the alien is hiding and the walking sound are so funny ! The gameplay is minimalist in a good way, addictive and well thought, it kept me playing it several tries, i think my best was day something like day 21, not sure about it ahah. Really solid compo entry you made there.

Was it really the martian wind that wiped that dust off of Oppy's solar panels?

This is probably the best compo game I've played so far. Everything fits together beautifully. The only thing I'd add is maybe a canyon wall or something in the background so it doesn't look so flat.

Sometimes the game feels unfair where the rover breaks behind a rock and does a 360 scan at the same time then dies, something like that. I don't have anything else to say, it's perfect.

A funny little game! I really like the theme, I enjoyed trying to keep the little guy going. I loved those simple animations on the alien. The fact it covers its eye when it's hidden from sight helped a lot. ;)

If there's one thing I'd change, it's the satellite scan. Sometimes it feels like there's not enough time between seeing the shadow and the scan running to find a safe location to go to. Also, I think it would be nice to somehow mark the area that's going to be scanned - a few of the times I had nowhere to run, so I just move a little bit further behind the rock, but the satellite still caught me on the edge of its scan field.

Overall it's a great entry. It was really enjoyable to play. ;)
