Dying Spark by snail

[raw]
made by snail for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Take control of an invincible machine powered by an orb circling around you that you must keep alive at all costs! Face off against hordes of enemies with different abilities! Unlock powerful weapons!

Controls: Move with arrow keys or WASD

Use the mouse to aim and click to shoot

Mouse scroll wheel to switch weapons

Objective: Destroy the other enemies while keeping any bullets-- including your own -- from hitting the core circling around your bot.

Second ever game jam, and first Ludum Dare! Lots of stuff I didn't have time for (like sound), but at least it's (hopefully) playable!

Cannot launch the game because it is missing unityplayer.dll
FYI: in ludum dare you have to rate other people's games in order to have yours be shown to others, and thus rated.

Jep, game does not start. I even tried copying my own .dll's but that didn't work.

Couple of things.

1. I accidentally included the wrong files in my upload, re-uploaded and hopefully should be playable now.

2. I know I need to play and rate games, I've just been pressed for time recently and didn't get the chance last weekend. Thanks so much for everyone who found my game anyway-- I'll make sure to get to your games first!

Finally started and I ma glad. Like the circulating effect, its kind a dejavu :). Especialy I like the situation when player is near to the edge so its bouncing. You even put some effort for difficulty choose which is always good, especialy at the game jams. I enjoed it.

Took me a minute to realize my own bullets could hurt my core! Really unique mechanic, but I felt it was unfair when you core starts spinning really fast because at that point you can't even really time your shots to not hit your core. But very cool idea, strong work!

I also took a minute (and two accidental suicides) to notice I could shoot my own core. Definitely a unique mechanic, and I found it much more challenging once I started trying to avoid shooting it.

Thanks for the feedback! I edited the description to hopefully make clearer that you can hit your own core. An instructions screen would have definitely been an improvement, I just ran out of time

Having to avoid shooting your own core is a unique mechanic! Player feedback would be helpful- I found myself clicking more than my tank was shooting, and I wasn't sure if it was me or the bullets had a recharge time.

@jelch Thanks for the feedback-- you don't need to click multiple times, you just need to hold down and the reload happens automatically. I originally wanted a charge-up animation, but just ran out of time-- probably a first priority to add, along with instructions and sound.

Controls were not included in the game. I had to go read the game page (which isn't too bad but will make some players confused which may make them quit).

i've got mixed feelings for this game, i did not like how i was able to shoot my own core, the graphics where clear and i like how you represented the state of your core by changing it's sprite.
I found some bugs with your more complex enemies, like the one who tries to keep a distance from you starts stuttering when he's on the border of how close he is allowed to be to you, one enemy just didn't do anything, at least not that i could see, he looked pretty dangerous so i got rid of him, but during his life, he just stood there, glaring at me.

The bullets pass through a lot of the enemies, while still doing damage, it was a bit off-putting.

I liked and disliked that you had to spool up your gun before it starts firing, could be made clearer. It was hard to manage when the core started spinning faster, not hitting yourself i mean.

took me a long time to figure out that i had to keep holding the mouse button to fire.
was surprised when i destroyed my own core. not a bad idea though. adds a little more challenge to the game. also liked the core bouncing off the walls. was expecting to try the weapons but could only use one. played normal difficulty but found it a little steep in level one itself. learning unity, so your source is helping me out. thanks for that.

Nice idea. I agree with some other comments that some in game instruction would be useful. Also, at least some audio and something other than a gray background would've made the game a bit more appealing with (probably) only minor effort.

@pillitoka I think this is the biggest issue with not having instructions in game-- I don't think I made it clear that you can use the mouse scroll wheel to switch weapons. I actually did implement 6 different weapons/variations that should all be accessible in later levels, but please let me know if that doesn't work for some reason
