made by Bauke Regnerus for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

Ruling the country is boring... the King wants to go on an adventure!

The Adventurous King is a strategic puzzle adventure game. Hire adventurers at the campsite, find loot and fight monsters!

This is my 2nd attempt at Ludum Dare and my first jam ever using Godot. The graphics are hand drawn and digitally coloured. You can't vote for audio because I've added it after the jam's deadline. Controller is supported! Check the change log below for all post jam bug fixes and improvements.

This game is inspired by Pikmin, Overlord and Little King's Story. Royalty free music by Always Music and Royalty Free Zone.

Change log:

*10/08/2019 * - No more crashes caused by: - collision; - changing between stages; - health dropping below zero; - Missing invisible wall added; - Bug in tutorial removed.

*10/09/2019 * - Minor improvements to actor collisions; - Controller support added; - Permadeath is now optional.

Nice Idea Dude! Work on Graphics :)

In the tutorial it won't show the item you need to walk over to pick up. Also, it pops up an error saying that it couldn't find the bonfire node or something like that.

Pretty cute! I think a life bar on the king or a save point would help a lot with replayability.

@Anonymous I just uploaded a new version that fixes the tutorial issues. See the change log. Thanks for the feedback. :)

This game was a lot of fun to play. I kept dying in the Medium section, and it was frustrating to have to start over again completely. I think I died three times before I decided to stop playing. I think it might have been better to just send the player back to camp with all their items and areas still unlocked. The permadeath is just too punishing otherwise, and since it's not a roguelike, it's not like the experience after permadeath is any different or better.

This is really nice! The premise was a little difficult to work out even without a tutorial, but once I worked that out I had quite a bit of fun. If anything, it is a little infuriating that you lose your villagers when you die.

The Graphics are awesome!

Pretty fun game ! It must not have been easy to code consistent behavior for both the allies and the ennemies in such a short time...

Pluses :
- Beautiful graphics (and really nice UI/loading screens !)
- Good tutorial, and straightforward gameplay and goals
- Nice difficulty curve (the hits are easy to dodge but dissuasive enough)

Possible improvements :
- It would be nice to be able to restart directly a level with your initial crew, getting back to the hub gets old after a while

All in all, great game !

Really cool game, the graphics were good and I was genuinely having fun... until the game crashed and i lost all of my progress. Also, you could walk on top of the mountain sprite. Other than that it was the best game I've played in this jam so far

Great game!
I like your rough like idea to get through the game.
And that you have to grind a bit.
It is really fun.
But poorly i could not get to the Graveyard...
An enemy was bugged so i could not kill him :(

really nice game, the art is amazing, just not sure how to finish the "graveyard" level, cleared every monster but still no progress
love the playstyle of being the king of the people!

Cool concept, like a top down Kingdom. It was unclear to me how the resources worked between stages, do you keep them, do they unlock new npcs to hire ? Cute little graphics :)

Really fun idea, love the hand drawn art style and animations. Feels like a prototype with a lot of potential if you developed it further. Tutorial was well done as well.

Great graphics! I really like the premise of being a king with 1 HP and your minions do the work. I encountered a few weird things though. If you pay for people and go back to the camp from a level, you have to pay for them again? Which means if I buy people and go to the wrong level and go back, I've lost all the resources I just spent. Also wish there were sound effects, but either way, cool game! Good luck next Ludum Dare :)

Great game! It would be nice if you could figure out how to put up an HTML5 version. Or at least add a Linux build. I had to use WINE to play, which isn't always fun :P

I generally don't like hard games, this however, was an absolute blast to play, good job on the art, mechanics, feel, everything

I love the idea and I believe if you had more time this would be a really cool full time game, not only a game jam entry. I loved the grindy aspect and the difficulty as well. Even though I failed so many times I still had a good time. Also the graphics were amazing. Im not sure if there should be any sounds, because I couldn't hear any, it would definitely added more to the overall feel of the game.

I didn't get to far since I felt the pacing was to slow.
Good graphics and nice mechanic to recruit and let the workers do the job instead of you.
Could maybe do some ditching of enemies once you killed them since the current approach just gave this unsatisfied feeling of doing same work over and over again.

to raise an army for campaigns every time is boring. it looks like an unnecessary stretch of time for the game. peasant, by the way, looks like Gérard Depardieu: d Graphics are very nice, sometimes visible white pixel stroke. Overall good, I guess.

@shabbyrtist I actually agree. For the "start with nothing" theme I made the party disband after each mission, but I'll probably remove that for the post jam version. Also there needs to be events that make it more fun to revisit areas. Thanks for your feedback.

I loved the game!
The art is great! It was you who did? The idea is very good and can be developed for something much bigger, better, more adventurous and challenging. Missed sounds! Really missed a lot ...
Great game. Congratulations!

The art style is really good and the game is fun. Nice effort! Other than that, I wish there is audio in the game and the door in the graveyard could be opened.

Awsome artsyle and atmosphere. The game mechanics work really good as well. With a bit of a story and some more mechanics I can see this beeing a great game outside the LD bubble as well. Good job

I really liked the game. The tutorial is simple, quick and teaches the game mechanics very well, which also works neatly. The graphics are well done and pleasant to the eyes.

The audio would be a great improvement to the game, in order to create a nice atmosphere and complement the graphics. Maybe you should consider finding a team mate to do the audio, so you can focus in development and graphics, which you are already doing nicely.

The issue that i found is a bug at the graveyard. I went there with all the companions and the game crashed as they were fighting the skeletons. Below is the console output, maybe it can help you figure it out.

Besides the lack of audio and the bug, excellent job!

@derek-volker Thanks for the bug report. So far I haven't been able to replicate the crash, so maybe it's already solved by a previous bug fix.

You kept to the theme very well especially since returning to the hub means you start with no units. The game is very easy to get into and play but I it slowly started to feel slow in the sense that I found myself having to go back multiple times to repeat the same action so that I can be powerful enough to move to the next section. Other than that, this is well done.

Took my time to get around to rating this! 😰Like I said in a steam chat, it really is amazing how much there is to do in this game for a jam game. Can't imagine how you managed to pull that off as a solo act. Lots of characters, looks really nice. Reminds me of a Flash game, in a very good way! Blur in the distance is a nice touch. Plays well with all the helpful companions and the sense of progress. Super well done!
