The Endless 8 by Jvdwijk
The Endless 8

A mysterious figure has tasked you with an assassination. Simple enough, just one, tiny, problem. You have no clue who you have to kill. All you have is a short description of the person in question, and a magical device which makes you relive the same day 8 times. Do you have what it takes to find your target within this loop?

The Endless 8 is a game about investigation. Converse with the characters in the story to find out more about each, and everyone of them.
Patch Update: Added current target hint on screen and activated loop option on game music

@avatargreggles Thank you for playing! Thanks for the heads up again ^^ @simone the link should now be working!
Thank you for the nice comments, appreciate it a lot! @roboshamit @samdwester and @meatball
@indieronin Thank you for playing Ronin! I do wonder who your target was, hope you had fun!
@lamossus I do agree it was a bit of a big project for a jam game, from the start we were considering what would make a fun gameplay loop and ended with this. Bit difficult to balance it in three days but we still had a lot of fun ^^ Thank you for the feedback!
I played the game in 2 ways,
- 1 was to follow the leads and find the target, loops were not needed tbh.
- 2 was to use loops as HP and kill random people, had low chance but since there is no event based lock we can sometimes kill the first person and get lucky, or run out of loops, which happened more often. Also the penalty didn't feel punishing enough to avoid doing this :P
The loops didn't really felt more than HP. Maybe with few event based scenarios and a bit dynamic story, you can use the loops in a better way to add more richness to the story.
The dynamic music was a nice touch and really added a lot of flavor to the mix.
The dialogue system was good for a jam, but had major flaws, The characters had fixed dialogue sequences, so when I get to a point where there are 3 names X, Y and Z. If I want to know about X then after the sequence is done, the dialogue restarts, leading to introductions every time we talk to them, which led to hilarious but soon annoying moments like "you are late" every time I talk to the kid, even when the time changes.
That being said, I congratulate the entire team for making such an amazing game. I wish the entire team best of luck for their future projects!
The loops were first a lot more.. restrictive. They only took 90 seconds in total and kept going while reading. Because this became very stressful for the testers we decided to make this a lot easier, because the premise of our game is finding the target. In the future we want to rework the loops so that there could be more to do in each loop (like making someone angry which causes them to refuse talking to you).
There's still a lot to be done on the dialogue too, a lot more interaction, some text visuals and some other stuff. We are still looking at what could make our system special and fun to play with ^^
Thanks again for all the feedback!
Thank you for playing our game and for the feedback! We really appreciate it ^^
This mystery vibe was very pleasant. The fact that there was several musics according to the time/location was also something I found impressive ^^
I killed the first person I saw and won the game instantly :)
@trypants Thanks for playing our game! Had a lot of fun watching you play ^^
@flying-dog-fish Thank you! You got lucky lmao
@smarto-club Thanks for the feedback! We definately want to add better lightning and such to improve the look ^^

I did encounter a small bug with the web build where I can't actually move unless I fullscreen it. Probably a unity or web build thing more than anything else though. It has happened with a few unity games this jam for me.
Overall great job!
The game is a bit rough, especially visual side.
I'm not really in this kind of gameplay where you have to read much, but I managed to reach the end.
Since I'm not into them my suggestion could be a bit off, but I think the sheer number of options could be a bit too much! You had like 10 options for every guest lol
As always, it's still an accomplishment to complete a game during a jam, keep it up!
The only issue I have with the game is how playing it only once is enough to solve all the hints in subsequent playthroughs, but I guess that's just a consequence of the limited time. You guys did manage to include a lot of dialogue in the limited time frame so great job there.
While I enjoyed the game and would definitely enjoy a more fleshed out experience, I think for this game jam a different game mode would have been a lot more appropriate. Instead of trying to find one person and kill them, you could have given the player a list of the hints, and then tasked them with figuring out each NPCs role. Who hates dogs? who is a secret serial killer? who is lying about their kid? and at the end of the loop, give a score based on how many they got right.
I think this would have worked better for the game jam simply because it would allow you to get the most out of the limited dialogue. In my first playthrough, I read all the dialogue and learned as much as I could about the characters and was able to kill the one NPC and win the game. When I played again, I realized I didn't have to talk to anyone since I already knew what they were gonna say so I just ran around the house killing people based on what I already knew about them. I did have fun solving the hints, but it felt weird restarting and running straight to an NPC just to kill them over and over again which is why I think it would be better to have asked me to find answers to all the hints during my first playthrough.
But either way it was a fun experience and I enjoyed the very weird and quirky dialogue.
