104 BPM by codyhansen
Keep them alive with the power of 104 BPM!
Keep your chest compressions to the beat in this CPR rhythm game! Controls:
Use the A S D keys on the left, and the J K L keys on the right. When the white note hits the heart icon, press the corresponding key.
Thank you very much for playing my game! I hope everyone has a good LDJAM46!

It feels so wrong to have fun while the person is on the verge of death ahah
https://youtu.be/I_izvAbhExY
Minor remark: A bit more feedback, when hitting or missing a note could be nice.
I have the urge to grind the hard level and improve my score now!
The controls are tough but it's an interesting control system and the visual presentation is very neat.
The only minor quibble I had is that I think there probably should be a bit more player feedback for missed beats but overall you've done an outstanding job.
Edit: Wow I just realized this was a compo entry not jam, I'm even more impressed now
@bigtinygames Speaking of Stayin' Alive! That song may be where I got the 104 BPM idea! Thank you for your review!
@noahro The amount of times I had to test this game is the only reason I can play it on normal even... The feedback on the missed beats is something that's been coming up a lot! Completely missed it. Great idea! Thank you!
@nekoruma Thank you for playing! And the kind words!
@kiguel182 Thank you! I was concerned about the impressions of the game at first, so this means a lot!
@solweak I didn't know if anyone would read those! So, thank you; I'm glad you had fun!
@dmtroy The missed beats response was a missed beat itself! Thank you for the suggestion! You are quite right. I'm glad you enjoyed playing it! And for your very kind words!
@jakemchugh1 Awh, shucks. You flatter me! Just between you and me, I can barely hit a thing on hard difficulty. We both need to up our typing!
I did feel a bit detached from the CPR (like I didn't feel like I had anything to do with it), as the person kept pushing even if I did nothing, and because there's no feedback for hits or misses.
Two things that bothered me:
1. Didn't bother me so much - but would be nice to have feedback sounds when a button is pressed.
2. Bothered me a LOT - the fact that the height of the buttons in-game did not match the fingers. for example: J was on top, and D(The button that had the same type of finger - the index) was on the bottom. This made it really difficult for me to play. I think this fix would make the game much more intuitive.

@marbles Yeah, that seems to be the most common feedback! I will keep it in mind for if I ever polish the game. Thank you!
@hillelgo That's a good point! During the jam, I often don't find the time to have someone outside the jam playtest it during production. I'm going to make note to do that for next time! It could help with issues I don't notice like this. Thank you for pointing it out!
@trampolinetales Perhaps... :wink:
@ruthiepee Yeah! The key mapping issue I didn't even notice beforehand. I plan on incorporating more playtesting in the future to avoid such issues! Thank you for your kind words though!
@sleepystudios Thank you! Perhaps I'll polish it up a bit in the future!
You should have joined the jam just to be able to put Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive as the soundtrack.
Jokes aside, great game, nice pixel art, but you should work more on the feedbacks related to the player input, it's really vital especially for this kind of games!
Nice compo entry, well done!
More feedback on whether the key was pressed at the same time.
Also, note that not all keyboards can (as the matter of fact, the most of the non-mechanic ones) emit 6 characters at the same time. Just the way keyboards are done hardware-wise.
The music is a bit raw (I crave harmony in music, which is a bit lacking in this kind of computer synthesized music), but it's not unexpected for compo as it takes time to create something more advanced.
Skill-curve... hm... the easiest one was too boring, the fastest was too fast for me, so I guess everyone can have the game match their own skill level.
In any case, nice entry and good luck.
Keep up the good work.
I do feel a vertical buttons layout (say, WSX-MKO) would've made it a lot easier for me, but at the same time it was fun to get accustomed with the existing one.
I'd definitely play more if more became available later _wink wink_.
@andidebob In post-mortem I'm getting a lot about the feedback and those dreaded right side inputs! I realize they really should be flipped. Thank you for your review!
@fernando-tonon-de-rossi

@kaisean-games Yeah, I didn't start on the music until night 2 when I suddenly realized I had no idea how to make music. Should have started with that for a rhythm game huh? Haha! Hindsight is 20/20. Also, I knew that about keyboards and it completely slipped my mind until you mentioned it just now. That is a very good point and something I did not think of. Thank you!
@rrrzzz I meant for this game to be slightly accurate to actual CPR. I toyed with the idea of BPM increasing, but as that kind of goes against CPR I opted to leave it out. However, the fail state idea was something I just skipped over. It makes sense too! Someone's life IS on the line after all! I'm considering tuning this game up a bit. Your comment has definitely helped with that! Thank you!
@dragonayzer One pump is better than none! WSX-MKO? I never thought of having keybindings match the layout in game... That's kind of neat! I like that. Thank you!
