Shooty Loops by AntaresValdemar

[raw]
made by AntaresValdemar for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

sc_4.png

Your space debris cleanup operation is hindered when you lose engine power and a collision causes you to spin in an endless loop. But your boss still expects results. Shoot down the space debris, and don't test your boss' patience!

WEBGL: https://antaresvaldemar.itch.io/shooty-loops

WINDOWS STANDALONE DOWNLOAD: https://antaresvaldemar.itch.io/shooty-loops-windows-standalone

How to play:

Goal: Destroy the amount of space debris specified in the quota (bottom left), before the ship loops around too many times (shown in the "loop" indicator top right) and your boss loses patience.

As you progress through the levels, the amount of ammo available in each magazine decreases, and the rotation of the ship speeds up, making it harder to aim and also making the loops pass more quickly.

Controls: Move = WASD/Arrows, Shoot = LMB, R = reload, ESC = pause & audio settings

Don't understood fully what's going on, but still pretty nice gameplay, especially sound effects

@colmaphis-games Oops sorry, added the link now!

Now I'm dizzy :p It can be annoying when the debris is too close to hit (but still takes up a bunch of the screen). Still a fun asteroids-like game. And nice sketch.

@ice9 I anticipate a lot of people will comment about the debris going through the gun lol. I thought of adding colliders or something to make them bounce away, I didn't want to open that can of worms in the final hours of the jam though haha. In retrospect I could have spawned the bullet further back to allow hitting it close up, but I wanted the bullet to come out of the end of the barrel cause it looks better. Anyway, thank you for playing!

@antaresvaldemar Thanks for the link, I liked a good game! As a recommendation I can only say that the ship has a slightly smoother movement maybe with a little delay with respect to the response of the keyboard, I liked the sound of the shot I thought it was my neighbor touching the wall: D

@antaresvaldemar Totally, I get you. 72 hours is so short :grimacing: Good work!

Maybe you could keep the bullet still visually come out the end of the barrel, but do a hit test for stuff up close as well? (The bullet doesn't need to actually hit it to clear it kind of thing)

@ice9 That is a very good suggestion, thank you! :)

@colmaphis-games That's a good suggestion, with more time I would try to make the movement of the cannon smoother. Haha I'm glad you like the sound, your comment made me laugh. I couldn't make a gunshot sound but in the end I think it works well for a muffled cannon in space :)

Lasted until level 8 (failed with just 2 pieces of debris left to destroy, oof), solid entry! Graphics are pretty good, the stylised planet/stars in the background are lovely, and the UI feels stylish in a grungy retrofuture sorta way that fits the mood perfectly. Music was solid, too, and the muffled *thump* of shooting the turret is ***really good.***

Unsurprisingly, I'm commenting about the debris/turret clipping: it's a wee bit annoying, especially when you're desperately gunning for those last few pieces of debris when the end of the final loop is seconds away, but super understandable given the complexity increase colliders or the likes would've brought. The limited turret rotation is a bit annoying as well, but also totally understandable & works with the aesthetics and mood, so I'd say you can get away with calling that a feature :P

@cliffracerx I appreciate the feedback! The not being able to shoot the clipping debris is definitely a frustrating oversight, especially when you are on the last piece and it's right in front of your face but can't hit it before time runs out.
The limited rotation however was intentional; it was meant to give meaning to the loop i.e. once you rotate past a certain point, you can't shoot the debris that has gone past you so you have to abandon it and move to another target. Thanks for playing, glad you enjoyed :)

Some of the odd bits of space debris didn't get destroyed if they where too close. I've found over the past load of jams that having a consistant art style through the game is important. The UI and teacher guy didn't fit with the main shooter part of it. Music was good - little note, it would be a good idea if the the music didn't restart when going into the main game. Just a continuous song through the whole thing. (I wansn't too happy with the name 'Shooty loops'. Try to have a name without the theme in it)

I loved the game. I didn't read through all of the feedback so sorry if I am repeating someone. First off what's up with that sick UI. I love the hand drawn aesthetic. The music fits great and the graphics are nicely made. As for the gameplay - it is fun and engaging. I only have two issues with it. First at some points it is hard to say whether the debris are too close for you to shoot at them. Sometimes it is fine - you see them cliping through the crosshair, but othertimes, it seems like you are gonna hit, but don't. And the second thing is, I realize the form of time limit you place (loops remaining: Num) is to further emphasise the theme, however, I think the theme is pretty well used otherwise in this game and there is no need for it to be "loops remaining", personally for me it was kind of vague, and initially I didn't even notice it and was thinking "a time limit would be good in this game". I think something like "Remaining fuel:" that visibly thicks down and gives you a better sense of how much time you have left would be better. Other than that, again, I really enjoyed the game!

@cosmicpickle Thanks for the feedback! I did originally have just a time countdown clock as the time limit, but I felt it didn't really utilise the theme, so I decided to make it number of loops instead. [EDIT] sorry, you did already say that in your comment, maybe I am still sleep deprived from the jam lol!
I guess it serves the same purpose, just a matter of how it's presented. Glad you like the visuals, thanks for playing!

@arcus Thanks for playing! I was planning to make a clean version of the UI but I ran out of time (and energy), so it is still the sketched version.

Great idea, space junkyard needed some cleaning and what a better way to do it than with a space turret! fun to play really like the sounds!

The game is simple, in theme. Maybe controls could be more responive, but its ok. Very nice game :) UI is very good :)

That UI looks awesome! That character portrait and music were great too, and the gameplay was fun, but did get repetitive after a while. Nice job!

The star box, UI, music and gameplay really work to create a great mood. What a great application of the theme in a unique direction. I love the funny writing too.

Excellent UI. I feel like the controls were the only thing holding this back as it was weird to aim with wasd when you are rotating around, but that could also be because I was not waiting for things to come into my crosshair.

Nice space shooter and a really good work with the theme :)

I guess enabling full-screen option might make the experience better, especially for a space shooter )))

I had some trouble because I didn't understood the movement of the spaceship (why am I limited to go down almost all the time?) and the bullet spawned really far and a little down than the sight drawing (I never got to break the closest debris). The rest was nice

I like the theme but it'd be nice if the ship spun faster the more you shot and the further in you got.

@matthewrobo Thanks, it does speed up throughout the levels, but it's subtle. People have said in the past that my game jam games were too hard :)
