L.O.S.S. - Looped Orbital Space Shooter by amarillion

[raw]
made by amarillion for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Logo

You're stuck in an orbit around Saturn! Collect fuel and jump to a higher orbit, to escape!

How to play

Play the web version at: https://amarillion.gitlab.io/ldjam47/

Use the cursor keys to move your spaceship. Avoid asteroids and aliens, but collect fuel tanks.

Your ship can defend itself with its forward laser. Unfortunately, the controls of the laser are stuck in a loop, firing automatically every second. You can only control the position of your ship.

Each orbit takes exactly 32 seconds. Collect the required fuel tanks in order to jump to a higher orbit. If the fuel gauge isn't full when an orbit comlpetes, your jump fails and you will remain stuck in a loop. You'll have to try again.

At higher orbits, everything moves a lot faster so beware!

@simone thanks for the bug report. The problem was caused by the domain name (sven.hemmer.gitlab.io) mismatching the certificate (*.gitlab.io) - the problem is the dot in sven.hemmer.

We've moved the game to a new location where this problem doesn't occur. Please try the new link: https://amarillion.gitlab.io/ldjam47/

And don't worry, we're not stealing any of your personal information :P

Now it works nicely :)

Good job, it is a solid entry for a Ludum Dare. Maybe a timer or a bar indicating how much time you have left before restarting the loop would have been useful.

Wow this is pretty fun. The yellow things sometimes feel a bit unfair, specially since it's hard to aim, but only in the higher orbits. I really like how the music slowly builds up when going up orbits!

The boost sound had me dying- I did a similar thing for the engine sound effects in our game. Very neat idea, would have been cool to see some representation of a planet below that gets smaller as you progress for a sense of scale.

I liked the audio effects "SSSWOOOOSSHHHHH!!!!" :)
Simple and straight-forward yet not easy. Those swirly yellow things are my doom.
Interesting concept with the rhythm-based shooting.

I was trying to get first place on the leaderboard but I had to settle for 3rd.

I think you should tweak the difficulty curve to make it more engaging because it was boring for the first few rounds. But once the speed picked up it became pretty fun.

The focus is more on avoiding obstacles than shooting. Towards the end I didn't even notice the bullets anymore. Maybe make the bullets fly faster so its easier to hit targets.

also, those sound effects are phenomenal

Solid shooter that maybe could be improved with a little more different kinds of enemies and pickups. Nice touch with the highscore system.

Thanks for the praise everybody! @hank-ather : Yes we thought the same. the original plans included a model of Saturn's rings in the background, but unfortunately we couldn't fit that in anymore.

@skleembof, it's tough to find the balance, for some playtesters the early levels were challenging enough.

I'm curious to hear from more people if they find the early game too easy and/or the late game too hard.

Neat! I enjoyed the death animation, it had a lot of frames to it and I can tell y'all put a lot of work in the graphics. Great job!

At least made it to the highscore :-). I atually double checked if it local or not. And I like that it is a global one :-).

The audio is really nice and the sound effects made me smile :D. Nice game!

I like spaceship games very much, and the idea of it being an orbit was cool, the first levels are very calm, it really starts to get interesting after phase 7, I believe that this should be the initial difficulty, the ship shooting alone is what makes it more difficult to hit objects, you should only shoot while the button is pressed, the ranking is very cool, because the main focus in these games is the Record, congratulations on the game, and I would like to be able to give me your feedback regarding the my game, a big hug.

I liked it. Sounds and musics are really good. I think it could be cool to control when to shoot. And maybe not to lose the fuel when lose a life.

Thanks for the positive comments @guimoliveira @eugenik @tomate-salat @ramonvicious. And thanks for the hug @etrealjunior

@etrealjunior, it seems you find this game too easy! To which level did you get? Did you manage to pass the "last" level?

@blobo The death animation was inspired by ships breaking up in FTL. But a lot smaller of course :)

great music and sound effects! Game is challenging! Maybe spawn a more fuel at the beginning ? The high-score chart is a great addition. Too bad I didn't make it.I personally really liked the beat-synced shooting.
