Olive and Kale by Rea

[raw]
made by Rea for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Your name is Olive. Your wife's name is Kale. You own a farm. What could be better?

Baking your wife a delicious pie with your own crops, of course! Got to keep the love alive, and the apples, and the wheat, and the rhubarb...Actually you have to keep it all alive. Water, weed, and try to do it all under three minutes.

I didn't actually see the bars at the side until I had pressed every key on my keyboard, but nice game <3 Lot's of time management needed

That's a really enjoyable game and well thought game design!
It's challenging, has a nice cute story, well fitted graphics and theme, and everything works. Very impressive!

It was a fun game once I figured out the mechanics! I think really the only issue was that sometimes the prompts were unresponsive and as a result, I thought there were other buttons I had to press with a need for a tutorial. But once I closed out and played again it worked fine. Good job guys!

Interesting game! It took me a second to figure out 1) That I had to plant and water them, and 2) that over watering plants is a thing that can kill them....! The pruning and harvesting were useful for showing that you have to juggle all your crops a bit.

I would have been less confused with some kind of tutorial, and if the spawn was closer to the crops and water. Otherwise it's a solid concept and you should be proud of your work!

I really like time management games like this, and the graphics were really fitting! I had to play it a few times but I finally baked Olive a pie! :)

interesting game, the art is like a story book.

@satiatedgumiho Thank you! I hope we can get a tutorial done at some point in the future, because that seems to be a common issue with players. Hard to tell what's going to be obvious or not sometimes when you already know everything in game.

I'll add the prompts bug into our list, lol.

@loopypicklehead A tutorial was definitely needed. Probably should have at least given a more mechanics based description on the launch page. Hopefully in the future we can polish it! Thank you!

As others have said, it was a bit confusing as to what was causing my crops to die and some kind of indicator as to what I was doing wrong would be good. I like the graphics and story. Thanks for the game.

The art and music where nice and I think the idea is good but I found the UI a bit confusing, my plants were dying and it was unclear to me why.

I had to retry a couple of time to succeed to grow one plant at least, the first ones died without I understood why.
The game is pretty hard too.
But the mecanic is cool :) I liked your entry.

I also agree the UI was a bit confusing... I wish there were more visual feedback about what was going on.
But this game is amazing, I love this kind of game, the art is super cool! Great game!!!

the game had a lot of charm and super cute. I am a horrible farmer though haha. I did successfully grow the apples which was really satisfying to see a big old apple tree.

it was a little hard to keep up with everything. I felt like the timers were a bit too fast but maybe it's just me

Once I figured out that I was over watering the plants (I was so confused) it was a fun and kind of calming experience! The art style was cute, I especially liked Kale's character design.

@ryano Thank you! If we continue it we'll for sure have to work on the gameplay feedback and UI

@francisco-caal Thanks! The plants die if they dont have water, or are over watered (over watered soil is red). They also die from weeds if you don't weed them once they grow to their half stage. UI for sure needs some work.

@karreg Thank you! Hopefully if we decide to continue we'll be able to make the UI more obvious so it's easier to pick up

@starlet Thank you so much!

@santiago-lafosse Thank you!

@barret Yeah the timers are pretty punishing if you don't know what to do exactly. There's a way to "speed run" with more than half the time remaining, so we worried about it being too easy. An oversight it seems like

@junebug Thank you! Yeah over watering can be a little hard to see sometimes. Something to work on later!

Would be good to point people in the direction of the well, I couldn't work out why my plants were dying until about halfway through the time when I finally walked over there. Nice game though

A cute little game for sure. It took my one failed run to figure out how to actually play, but the second run was good! One thing I noticed was the apple tree was so tall it was hard to notice the check above it. Well done!
