Event Horizon by Bejaro

[raw]
made by Bejaro for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Event Horizon is a top-down shooter stuck in a loop!

Escape the gravity well of the black hole by slaying the beast within. Collect fuel from nearby asteroids to ensure you don't get dragged inside!

POST-JAM NOTES:

Thanks so much for the feedback! An updated post-jam version is now available on itch.io for those who'd like to check it out!

Here are a couple of notes to help those of you who'd like to try this out:

  • The speed at which the game loads can affect your starting position. Hold or tap W during the loading screen to help with this.
  • You can shoot red asteroids to get fuel.
  • Asteroids like to spawn on top of each other. They also like to hurt you so try not to crash into them.

Very challanging but still fun. A it's a bit confusing that you instantly have to press W at the beginning, otherwise you'll die directly after the loading scene without even seeing the spaceship and the black hole :)

I really enjoyed this little jam. Nice game mechanics really fitted the theme and a fun and interesting concept overall.

It's a bit hard to not die instantly when you launch the game. I like the idee.

Very nice idea, rather bad implementation in my opinion.
You get no warning, no controls nothing when you start the game. There's no introduction what you gotta do at all.
The controls are absolutely horrendous. Pressing W to fly down when you are below the black hole feels bad.
The shooting frequency of the black hole (why on earth does a black hole shoot lasers in the first place?) is way too high, the shots are too close to each other so it's basically impossible to dodge when you are near to the hole.
The Audio sliders in the options don't work at all.
It had a nice theme to it, the audio was nice, the graphics also looked cool, but gameplay was absolutely horrible. Sorry. :\

Nice graphics and the boost thing is a nice twist to the "spin around the black hole". Almost did not find the back button in the options menu

It took me a while to get used to the controls, but once your brain adapts it's quite fun. Definitely original, and looks good.

The idea of the game itself is not bad. The controls were abit weird for me so it was hard.

The music set the mode very well and the graphics were great for the game. I found myself retrying the game until I won, I may even come back to this to try and beat it with higher health. Would definately come back if it had more levels, have you ever though of adding an upgrade system? I think it would go well with the game.

@bejaro and all I enjoyed your game, really think it's a different concept. Maybe you should start further from the center and maybe have a hardcore level with controls more physics like - now looks too arcade, although that is fine for several players. You should continue the game :)

I'm very interested in this game, however you have no build for my OS. You are using unity, [please publish to the web](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/legendary-orbit-golf/publish-for-web) or at least for Linux and MacOS.

@pschichtel I'd love to - there was a WebGL version planned but time ran a little short to fix it in time for the jam deadline. I'm hoping to get that done at some point soon, hopefully with a few additional tweaks and features.

Very challenging game. It took me a while to get used to the controls and not dying immediately. The art is cool, I really like the animated background in main menu. Sound are also nice.
If I can give a suggestion, in my opinion it would be better to move the spaceship a bit away from the center at the beginning in order to have some seconds to understand how the controls work.

SUCH a cool game! I really like the concept - simple but straightforward - and it's a lot of fun to play! I was kinda mesmerized by the backgrounds, good job :D it took me an embarassing long time to figure out that I could shoot the asteroids lol but that's just me being dumb

Awesome little game concept, I really loved the graphics and presentation! Maybe you should start further from the black hole though, first time I loaded in I died instantly before I got my bearings. And the control scheme takes some getting used to. Maybe there should be a way that you could inefficiently use fuel to repair yourself, just an idea!

It feels really weird to control the ship, when it's below the black hole, because right goes left, and left goes right. Maybe a dynamic control scheme depennding on where the ship is located? Overall I really enjoyed the game, even though I cound not beat it.

Interesting idea, I appreciate the volume sliders in the option menu but did not affect the menu music it seems. The gameplay gets pretty tedious fast, the circling mechanic could be really cool if it felt more like gravity and not that you are just on a circle path that you move in and out and flip direction of. Did not feel that I could reliably dodge the green shots so the best strategy I found was to try and block the shots with the asteroids, and just try and pick up fuel when possible without spending too much. Relly like the background and the visuals. But the above and also it feels like a slight delay when changing directions (even though the actual "flip" of speed seems instant) probably will keep me from coming back to it.

But overall nice job! Kept me playing for a while!
