Torchbearer of Love and Passion or something by CaptainDreamcast

[raw]
made by CaptainDreamcast for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Torch Bearer (first name Torch, last name Bearer), is the last man willing to light the Olympic cauldron in Japan and upkeep the 30000-years-old Olympic tradition. However, his relationship with his girlfriend Girl Friend (first name Girl, last name Friend) is going very, very poorly! Should she break up with him, she would splash him, his expensive custom shirt and, most important of all, the Olympic flame that represents the hopes and smiles of children around the globe! Can Torch keep the flame alive? Can Torch keep his love alive? Could I keep major gameplay features alive? All these questions are answered in Torchbearer of Love and Passion!

So yeah, it was supposed to be a mix of a runner with a dating sim, like some sort of endless dater. It's not really about dating, and it's not really endless, so it's more of a finite-relationship-simulator. But endless dater sounds cooler, so let's go with that! Also to foreshadow one of the earlier questions, the Ludum Dare deadline ate my sound effects. Ludum Dare deadline would also be a fine name for a dog when you think about it like that, wouldn't it?

Note: Dreamcast port coming later.

Update: Dreamcast port added + had to fix a crash when picking the wrong answer on the first question. Fail-and-crash is a bit too hardcore for vanilla (always a great DLC idea though).

Also this might just be the most cursed banner/title screen I have ever made, it's great and/or worrisome: BANNER.png

I loved the combination! Nice pacing.
I made it as far as love allowed me, then I ran a little more.
The dialog keep me reading and waiting for the reaction! Please keep your work on developing the idea.

Kind of doesn't make much sense at all (even though I think I get all the things it's talking about) but I commend the fact it's made for Dreamcast, which I guess it's your thing you do (I spent a whole 30 minutes or more trying to get an emulator to work so I could play it, also turns out the DC main menu is real cool). I imagine you have a framework or engine of sorts for it.

@730 I was unhappy with Unity's export-to-Dreamcast option, so I became an enginedev. The Dreamcast portion of my engine uses KallistiOS (https://github.com/KallistiOS/KallistiOS), which is probably still the most comprehensive Dreamcast homebrew library to date. I can't say for sure if the game works in an emulator, I always recommend burning it to a disc and trying it on real hardware. The different versions are pretty much the same, the Dreamcast version has lower-quality ogg files so the streaming doesn't get choppy, so I guess on PC I'd rather recommend the web version than an emulator. I did notice though that the install instructions where I usually add the how-to-burn-to-disc stuff were missing on the itch page, so I added those now.

Also thanks for the nice comments everyone! (Sadly can't stop toying with the Eiffel tower though)

I liked the narrator's texts. For sure the funniest (and most humorous) entry I've seen thus far. What's the deal with the queen? She's like everywhere O_O

Me: There's no way this guy actually made a Dreamcast game for this, but I have to try...

Me, 20 minutes later: Well I'll be damned.

The game itself feels like it tries too hard to be funny and not hard enough to be a game, but overall I did enjoy it (and I admire the dedication to the Dreamcast). I did rather enjoy the losing condition.

Okay i think the run cycle was my favorite part of this game. I do wish the running sequence was longer and more challenging. The game is of course hilarious and is great for someone who is on many different corners of the internet and gets all of the little easter eggs.

Intriguing mashup of the two most gripping genres of videogame. The flawless execution leaves one wondering why we haven't seen more games of this type. To top it all of, a fantastic ending to this endless adventure leaves the coommunity at large wondering what else lies in store. In short, it's not only everything you could ask for, but also everything else.
