Loop Control by Tomate_Salat

[raw]
made by Tomate_Salat for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

You are a robot on a dying planet with a mechanical snake looping around you. This snake went insane and you better don't touch it!

On that planet there are circuit boards. Collect them for getting control over the snake. But when the snake collects them you will loose control! If you have lost too much the snake will kill you!

You can control your robot with WASD or Arrow Keys

Good Luck

Great use of the theme. Had fun with it but never managed to fill the whole bar even though i played for a good while.

So far this is the game I've felt most 'Stuck in Loop' in. The weird little lunges you have to do to get around the snake are fun to try and master. Good job!

Novel idea that I haven't seen so far. Sadly more frustrating than fun. Graphics are a little empty, but the win animation is really nice!

Music was really suspense!

Awesome idea! I liked the implementation of the theme a lot. The fact that the snake gets faster the more circuits you have makes for a very nice challenge. Also, the music is very moody and relaxing. Well done!
I think, with some extra polish this game would be awesome. I am missing some details in graphics maybe, though I like the looks of the snake, or some sort of level design. Still, good work!

Hey @tomate-salat !

Wow I did not expect that, I started playing and though "well that's pretty easy, snake doesn't seem to steal the circuits" but boy how things change when the snake goes faster and starts gobbing up everything !

The speed curve is very very well thought, I don't know if this was on purpose or a welcome surprise for you but the snake starting very slow, meaning it's only a threat to your movements, and as it goes faster it becomes a threat to the circuits is kind of a great implicit tutorial !

Graphics and music work well, not too fancy but also not disturbing to the gameplay which is pleasant.

Good work !

Feel free to check and give me your opinions on my entry

Cheers

So, I think it has potential. The game as it stands is a little too hard. I think you could maybe tweak a few things to make it less difficult and more fun. One idea is to make "touching" the snake a little more lenient, for example, you would lose some health instead of losing instantly.

Another, bigger change would be to make the game about controling the snake, and less about avoiding it. E.g. make the game be about getting the snake to pick up some things, instead of having to pick things up yourself.

A fun thing I found out is that you can sort of keep the snake in place if you start going around it in circles quickly. That's kinda interesting! Maybe it's worth exploring as a mechanic.

The game was challenging and fun! It could use a little more work in graphics, especially the background and the snake. Nice work :)

Very nice, because it is so hard maybe you could add 3 hearts/lives before restarting :) I managed to win, cool animation :)

First of all: thanks to all playing my game and giving feedback. I try to play all of your games (if possible).

@guaranteedtrainwreck I experimented a lot with the speed and if the snake should either grow or shrink. In the first shot the snake had a speed of 360°/s which looked cool - but was too fast. After a lot of try-outs I reached the current balancing. I've seen that you submitted a web-version of your game. So I definitively will play it =).

@typeswitch well - avoiding the snake is actually the core-concept of that game ^^. I also thought of going more in direction of "feeding the snake". But that would've turned the game into beeing too easy. Regarding the health-system: I should keep that in mind. My idea was to set the highscore as "single goal". But it could've been the second. Allowing the player to reach more easy the end of the round would might increase replayability.

Btw: exploring the mechanic is definitively worth it. The snake is not unpredictable and my highscore is 11s.

I like your usage of the theme. The orbital movement of the snake made for some cool situations where your timing and planning is crucial. The game even felt kinda rhythmic to me after getting the hang of it, because of the jumpy movements you had to make. This made it very satisfying to play. Awesome game!

Wow, great use of the theme. I loved the constant back and forth between the robot and the snake collecting. It was frustrating when a circuit would spawn close enough that the snake got it before I even got a chance, making that life start with a shorter bar. Keep making games!

Great take on the theme! I appreciate that there's a little pointer showing you where the next circuit is - it's a nice little QoL touch.

Won in 30 seconds on my second try:
