Stuck on a Hyperloop by indigo

[raw]
made by indigo for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

First, the weather changed. Then everyone circled Earth on a train with an onboard sauna. You, tailie, have only one chance of survival: sneak onboard Elon Musk's experimental Hyperloop.

Made in Godot. It's my first game in Godot, and it's very compo. Please say nice things in the comments.

The credits don't roll due to a bug, and yes, the game is very short.

Please Note

  • Lots of players reported issues with the HTML5 version, so you may want to pick a download instead.
  • The original compo version (I left the downloads below) has two minor, but "game-breaking" bugs:
    • The credit screen never shows up (instead, you are just stuck forever in the final room).
    • You can play the game upside-down because I can't count to PI / 2 (thanks @jmoocow2003 for the bug report!).
  • Therefore, you may want to try one of these versions instead:
    • Windows: https://uni-bonn.sciebo.de/s/9fbIufcv8vAWs9Z
    • Linux: https://uni-bonn.sciebo.de/s/TSyt9dCTn4ol5bd
    • The HTML5 version is broken beyond repair, so I won't even fix those bugs there.

Cool, there was a bit of slowdown but the movement was good and I think the mumbles and voice acting were a nice touch. Good Job :) P.S can I have my arms back it's hard to type without them.

I like the voice acting! I couldn't get the mouse to stay on the game in web so it made it a little hard to play but I got through a few cops :) I couldn't tell I had a gun and was shooting on the first one, but once I did I could see this being pretty fun. Nice humor too!

Hi, lovely game! Voiceacting in a compo game is nice, problem is there are no controls presented nor there are hints of what to do.

Thank you everyone for the feedback! Yes, I am aware the game has issues on web -- I hadn't tested it for web during development, and then noticed how it's broken only past midnight when porting, so I had no time to fix it. Maybe not seeing you have a gun is also a bug of the port? It's an FPS, I had hoped everyone would be acquainted enough with the concept and controls that it warranted no further explanation. :)

This is a nice game! I like the graphics and (like everyone else said) the voice acting was cool too. I also thought the dialogue was pretty funny. The only issues I had were on the windows version, you couldn't full screen for some reason (which isn't really necessary, I just wanted to point it out) and for some reason you can look up and down far enough to play the game upside down, which of course prompted me to do an upside down play through (which, if you're curious, was really hard to control since everything was reversed, but I think the hit reg got botched with the bots because I finished it with a lot more health than on my first play through, and I moved around a lot less). Overall, a good short and sweet game :)

@jmoocow2003 Oh, wow, I never noticed that bug! This was my first attempt at a game with Godot, and I had some struggles to get the character controller to work properly. Unfortunately, the Godot documentation often fails to explain what space the vectors and transforms are expected to be in, which can lead to weird outcomes. I am glad you took it with humor though! Thanks for the feedback on the display settings as well, next time I'll try giving the player some more options. Best of luck to you!

Doing a 3D story-based godot game for the compo really is an undertaking, but I think it came out super polished, great looking, and great sounding, too. Playing it in the browser was a bit tough but worked fine when I downloaded it (at least that was my experience). Great job!

Hi! This was a very interesting game, i assume you aready know but in the browser build "The one i played" Mouse cursor is nuts! and touching Meshes with polygons like the sharp cristals "i guess" from the first level slow down the game.

However i took down the police! Good job

For some reason it crashed after I died in the second room (Invalid get index 'health' (on base: 'null instance' is stuck in a LOOP). Also I never got to have a gun as the UI suggested I might. Very impressive for compo, good luck in your future endeavors!

@kirbloid @ds-nahogara Thanks for the nice feedback! Yes, the browser build is definitely broken.

@idan-rooze Well, yes, and so is the entire game. :) Thanks for trying it out!

I had a few laughs with this. Also it's the first FPS I played this LD, so that's nice. Solid entry.

Your Linux build is missing the ld47-linux.pck file, so I had to borrow the one from the Windows build to get it to run. If you'd rather just have a single file that combines both the executable and the game data, you can do that by enabling the "Embed Pck" setting within the Options tab of the Export dialog.

Anyway, I enjoyed the game. It was funny, and shooting the final guard by jumping and firing over the wall was amusing.

@pizzasgood Thank you for your feedback! I have (hopefully) fixed the build, as per your instruction.

Nice little game. Movement controls were intuitive and I liked the mumbling sounds. I was surprised when the cop suddenly appeared - but shot him down :)

I remember Professor Layton being a little different than this...

That was weird, but fun. I quickly figured out that the best way to win in combat was the "peek-a-boo" strategy, since no-one seems to realise you're there if you just jump up on the spot while shooting.

Yep, used same strategy as @john-gabriel

Oh man, I was waiting for Elon Musk at the end, oh well

Also, this :D

Cool entry! Always nice to get some voice acting on a compo entry, well done! The only thing I'd say is that I wished there was a bit more affordance on player shots, it took me a while to figure out if I was hitting the guards or not. But overall, quite a lot of content of systems at play in there, good job!

Version HTML5 it's slow. Godot and Unity is not good for HTML5. Next time you can try using BabylonJS or ThreeJS. Or Phaser to 2D. Good job.

my testla stock gone to waste was hilarious. Not sure what the UI was until i started getting shot. I thought it was a chainsaw that was on my screen that i was to manually chop people up with. Nice creative environment for your story as hyperloops are totlaly in the inventive phase at this time! :D Good first entry.

The storytelling is nice, it'd be great if it was longer! Hope you enjoyed Godot, I've never worked with it so far - kudos for that.

Nice first entry, and keep it up!

@zgragselus yeah, working with Godot was actually an amazing experience! I really like the software architecture of that engine. The concept of "scenes", which are basically prototyped parts of the scene graph with attached logic, is really cool. Scenes are both composable and inheritable, which enables a very clean design for the game. Plus it ships with great features like built-in coroutines, which helped me with scripting events.

Unfortunately, it took me most of the weekend until I had figured those things out, but it's certainly something that I will enjoy a lot working with for future jams!

@indigo Love this serie btw, your game was nice but very simple, but a 3D entry for a compo is reeeeaally hard so you did a good job !

Good job on the game! The beginning was a bit slow and it took quite a while until you could actually play the game (at least for me). Then I died quite quickly. as it was quite hard. But good job on the graphics and on getting so much content in the game! WOW

I'm surprised there's only one comment on Snowpiercer. This game concept is actually great because I can live out that setting which is a really uncommon experience. Got to the end and beat it but I wish I got to have a nice axe-wielding scene :P

I don't know what I've just played, but I know I like it. The dialogs are funny and easy to understand. A really nice game, you clearly aren't a big fan of Elon Musk I think.

My only suggestion is to add more time to read the dialogs

Snowpiercer (I have only seen the film) meets Tesla ;-)

Cool concept, crazy story, I liked the graphics and animations. The text was a little too fast for me, and the shooting gameplay is very easy once you notice that you can shoot through the barriers ;-)

For the time of a compo impressing models in there, the murmling speech sound is pretty cool.

Good job!
