(Working Title) Some Kind of Survival Game That Never Got Completed -Ultimate... by dracominer

[raw]
made by dracominer for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

The game's full title is "Some Kind of Survival Game That Never Got Completed - Ultimate Ludum Dare Jam #45 Edition!!!!" for perhaps a very obvious reason.

Disclaimer: This game, whose title I will only write once in my life, was an ambitious goal for ludum dare. The design of the game was for the player to be placed on a planet that is slowly being consumed by a corruption. The corruption would manifest as a discoloration in the world, and strange monsters that would stalk the player around the world, but would be easy enough to avoid if you kept moving. The goal is to gather resources from the world to eventually build a spacecraft to escape from the corruption. Something I wanted to do after ludum dare was to implement a way to continue the progression from a space base and create a cure for the corruption so the player could go heal the planet and restore it to its former glory. Little of what I just described was possible during ludum dare.

That being said, what is in this game is a crafting system and resource collection system that technically cannot take you from nothing to building a spacecraft. It can get you very far and generally, I had personal doubts about this game towards the end of the jam. But I'm stubborn so I'm submitting this anyway and hoping to hear in the reviews if this game is salvageable or if the fundamental design is flawed (Anonymous reviews allowed bc I want any suggestions, even if it's to pitch this and try something different)

Gameplay

Controls : most things that are interactable are either left or right click - Items are left-click to pickup - Resource structures are right click to start harvest - Inventory is left click to drop an item in the slot - Buttons act like you would expect

Movement is default unity inputs : walking with WASD or Arrows, with left shift for sprint

  • Note that you cannot interact with things while sprinting. That was planned to be a thing related to the corruption monsters

There is no music not by choice, but for lack of time.

the art is generally bad as it's programmer art. Some of it looks decent, and that's because it's the beautiful LudumDairy font.

Tools:

Code: - Unity - 2019.2 - Some preview packages

Art: - Gimp (pixel art) - Krita (fancy art)

Resources

  • I made all art assets by myself excepting some Unity defaults and TMPro defaults for UI that I used.
