[raw]
made by gajop for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

demo-opt.gif

In this game you play as the friendly neighborhood alien trying to save the local pink skins from extinction. Defend them from the many meteors on route to their planet, but perhaps let a few slide as they tend to breed uncontrollably.

Controls: - WASD to move - Left Click to shoot

Tools: - Rust - ggez - gimp - bfxr

Rust is a great language, I had a lot of fun.

Changelog: - Fix Windows build: https://github.com/gajop/LD46/releases/tag/1.1

Asteroids with a twist! Very fun, the little tutorial/cheat sheet at the beginning was really useful.

Pink skins? I assume that means I'm playing as a member of the Andorian Imperial Guard!

A nice twist on a classic formula. I definitely found controlling the ship challenging with the high inertia!

Nice! I like the idea and the gameplay is fun! The menu was really great for explaining the mechanics. While I did like the more momentum based movement, the game would be more satisfying if the movement was just a little bit tighter so you can move around more freely. Other than that it's small things like adding music and making the bullets a little bigger.

Great job overall!

Hey I played your Game till the end, even though it was under famine and war. I just hoped for a miracle Asteroid right before the 10 Billion mark. I really liked the Mix of Protection, but not to much. I would have liked, if shooting the planet reduced the population as well.

@everyone thanks for playing :)

@westmave I didn't make shooting the planet reduce population because that would make it too controllable. This game requires a little bit of planning (both in controlling ship inertia and population)

This has the control feel of Crystal Quest from back in the day. Good balance between protection/destruction. Programmer art!

Good job. Game fits the theme perfectly. Spaceship is a bit hard to control in my opinion, but still a great game.

I crashed on the planet, the control is a bit slippery!

Aren't the hard controls are what makes this game interesting? Might've been nice to have gravity as an extra challenge. Why is space a torus? Maybe hard mode could also punish you for running away if you go outside the map.

I like the physics interaction with asteroids and the twist that you have to let some through.

Cool aproach to asteroids. But i think would me more fun if planet was also moving maybe?
And of course You need gravity in it! It would be great then I think
Graphics ar ok

A little tricky to control the ship but apart from that nice game and cool theme.

It feels like a good old arcade game. It is fun to fly around and shoot at all incoming asteroids.

Also having asteroids burning and slowly desintegrating to dust when they are too small is a cool idea, as well as the need to let some pass through. Combined with the different damages amount depending on the asteroid's size, it works pretty well.

The ship may be a bit too hard to control though, so that I didn't really have to let asteroids pass through as I missed some anyways when there were too much of them (but I may just be bad at good old arcade games haha). And I validate the idea seen in other comments to have your vessel slowly orbiting around the planet if you're close enough and not moving.

Old style graphics are nice, simple and effective. The planet is really nice with its rotation and the one of its atmosphere not having the same speed.

Interesting approach to "keep it alive". I won with only 200M survivors. The imperfect control over the population and the ship are what make the game.

Great twist on a classic, I'm a fan. Good level of difficulty. People commenting on slippery controls have clearly never been to space. Incorporating gravity would be sweet but probably out of scope for Compo, and the gameplay is good without it.

Hi, I finally got around to playing LD entries - sorry for being late =) Cool game, I made a similar one called Planetary Remains back in LD38 so this game gives me double retro vibes =) Great job and sticking to the theme :)
