Herding sheep by stupidpawn

[raw]
made by stupidpawn for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Hey you!

I made a game in which you have to herde sheep. You can play the game here: https://stupidpawn.itch.io/herding-sheep
This version of the game has some game breaking bugs removed from it.

Controls:

Left mouse button: Select the shepherd and dogs.
Right mouse button: Move the shepherd and dogs, repair fences.
Space bar: Call the sheep towards the shepherd.
R: Restart.

This is the original version uploaded within the dealine, but it does contain game breaking bugs that can stop the game from working: http://tiny.cc/4vsdnz

Omg those sheep are suicidal! You made some nice art and sounds but did you also make the sheep try to jump out of the map on purpose? :D
Sure feels like it, I was trying real hard to keep at least one alive but it just ran and jumped :(
Good job on the game!

I was unable to save any sheep! I think they were against me, which makes me wonder how terrible a shepherd I really am. I don't think there's enough time to react to situations, and I think sheep try really hard to fall off (which is strange because sheep are pretty surefooted!). By the by, I was able to repair multiple fences at once by right-clicking new ones before my shepherd arrived to fix it. I'm pretty sure it's unintentional. The best I managed was 4 at the same time.

Nice game! Instead of abstract timer it would be better to move sheeps along a path from start to finish. I think it would motivate player better. Keep going!

I think I actively killed more sheep than they did themselves. Very challenging and spot on for the theme!

The game is cute. altough when a rocks falls from the sky the sheep automatically walk towards it. Which is kind of unfair. Also when they walk towards where the rock will fall and you lead a dog there the sheep doesn't react to the dog. This could be expanded into a full game however and it would be really fun. Also I couldn't manage to make the game fullscreen.

@wormholegames the sheep move randomly in 8 directions thus there is a chance that they will walk under the rock. I probably should have programmed that when there is a rock falling that they don't walk under it, it might feel unfair when they do that. It is weird that the sheep didn't react to the dog, that is a bug. And the game should also be able to go in fullscreen, what is the aspect ratio of your monitor and what version of windows do you run?

@ilya-nazarov that is pretty good idea! Would also have been easier to implement than the timer.

@incobalt when I first made the repairing fence mechanic it was not intentional. However, I did leave it in because I feel like good players can utilize this. Maybe I should have made it more explicit in the instructions of the game that you are able to repair more fence at once, but on the other hand I thought it would be fun if players could figure it out for themselves.

This had a suprising amount of depth mostly thanks to the RTS style ability to choose between the two different unit types and the fence repair. I like that both the farmer and the dogs had strengths and weaknesses. I felt bad when the sheep got crushed. Probably more so than when the farmer met his brutal end. But for a little 48 hour jam this has some pretty neat base ideas. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your entry!

This is a tough game, but it's very fun! There's a lot here, and it's really tricky spinning so many plates at once. I started to get into the groove after a few restarts, and I really enjoyed it. Nice entry!

The dogs were adorable and even though the sheep AI was definitely trolling me I found it fun and entertaining. Why is it so difficult to keep my fences repaired on my floating pasture lol?

Great job, compo is so tough!

Why my fence is degrading on it's own and this fast? :D But in the end, I was okay with just watching the sheep falling out of bounds of the game and screaming to peaceful sound of your guitar. Very zen experience :)
