Skelehunt by Catomag

[raw]
made by Catomag for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

You are a purple peasant who's home has been cursed with an undead spell, skeletons have invaded and you find you've become immortal skipping back to the start of the curse upon death. You equip your trusty historically-accurate shuriken and decide to take your revenge.

Game requires computer with modern gpu, ran ~80fps on a mobile gtx 1050.

Goal

Kill all skeletons. (Game doesn't actually have a win screen or anything how many you kill is up to you)

Controls

Arrow Keys or WASD to move up and down. Space bar to shoot.

Items:

There are a 3 items to collect in the map (follow paths to find them) - Bike: doubles movement speed - Ice Boots: turn water into ice which lets you and the skeletons cross - Golden Shuriken - bigger shuriken that can pierce through enemies

Design

Game is made in C and uses a batch renderer to draw thousands of skeletons at a time, with a texture atlas to keep track of all the tiles and sprites in the game.

Dependencies

If you want to compile on linux, here are all the dependencies - OpenGL - GLFW - OpenAL

Bug fixes

  • increased player contrast (player was barelly visible on some displays)
  • fixed memory leaks (there were multiple)
  • fixed bug where map wouldn't reload upon death (ruins whole progression)
  • fixed issue where certain sounds wouldn't play
  • fixed issue where ice was replacing non water blocks and spawning in wrong pattern

Solid entry. Graphics is nice and I love the music! Props for not using an established engine and coding everything by yourself! I also prefer this style of jamming (if you want, you can checkout my submission, made with in-house engine written in C++).

Unfortunately, game hadn't work when I downloaded it and had to debug it myself. You messed up assets' names (including assets directory), all files are ending with `(1)`, which prevents game from running. After removing that, the game runs smoothly.

I love the classic style of the graphics very arti-esque, the music is really fitting as well, nice game!

The ice boots are really cool. Before reading the description here, I thought they were some sort of water-skis or jet pack, but ice boots makes more sense, and knowing what they are has greatly elevated my mental image :)

Yeah getting it to build was difficult. If you make a github repo, I'd be happy to send a pull request to make it easier to build on linux.

Other than that, the game was pretty good, and had some cool ideas. The water turning to ice when you walk on it was clever. The music was great, and I also loved the retro graphics. It was very difficult though! The skeletons move super fast, and sometimes they clip through the walls lol. The collision detection seemed buggy and caused you to get stuck rather than letting you slide along the walls, but that was actually a good thing since it also affected the skeletons. If they didn't get stuck on walls, I imagine the game would be a lot harder.

Nice job, and props for not using an off-the-shelf engine for this!

oh man, the graphics look great, but I'm honestly not sure how I'm supposed to start the game.
Am I supposed to run Makefile first?

For info, when I run skelehunt, I get that error that OpenAL32.dll cannot be found

Nice game with nice music, but somehow I always had to fight against around 100 skeletons at once, that was really hard, also shooting not only in the direction you're looking at, but also in any other direction would be nice, especially if you're chased by skeletons

The game is cool, but the grass sprites are painful to look at.

Sorry, can't get this to run at all. I tried downloading everything from the google drive link but it just crashed on startup.
Kudos for writing something from scratch in C with no game engine though! I'd recommend providing a single link to a zip for people to download and run.

I also can't play it, because I get a "The application was unable to start correctly" error after I downloaded OpenAL32.dll myself.

Sorry once again lads, i have two folders called ludem dare 47 and all the file names got mixed up (google drive thought they were duplicates and added a checky (1)), should be fixed now. This time I'll test if it actually works on windows now.

I still get the same error. Also, OpenAL32.dll is still not in the zip file, I had to add it by myself.

I don't know why but the game brings back so nostalgic memories. I was wide smiling when found a car :) Something from early days and a bit of Dwarf Fortress (probably because of the map art style). Thank you for sharing, best of luck!

This is really cool! The graphics are very cohesive which is really nice. You took a ridiculous idea and executed it really well, love it!
