Cotton Candy Dream by LelulaGames

[raw]
made by LelulaGames for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Fairies and magical shards may seem beatiful and surean, but there's danger just beyond the edge of the world. And a portal that only takes you right back to where you began.

W, A, S, D to move. R to restart. Loop through the portal again and again to pick up all the crystals.

My first game jam. Hope you enjoy it.

All assets created by Crissy Moss in Unity.

Change Log: Changed AI for fairies so they stop falling out of world. Moved trees so they aren't floating. Adjusted some landscape so the player stops falling out of the world. Added collision boxes to portal so player does not fly through it. Changed crystal pick ups so they are actually floating instead of just sitting in the air. Removed some of the clutter to help performance.

This looks very serene and wish there was a mellow background music but the art and concept are very cool

This game has great bones! Looks really cool and the right audio would make it somewhere I could really spend some time. I feel like creating more obvious paths with the pick-ups for different run-throughs would make this a blast. Great work!

- nice art style
- good start of a game-play loop
- some sort of indicator of how many pickups or whatever is needed to progress would be helpful.
- would really benefit from some appropriate music
- physics probably needs to be set to continuous on the ball, as if you get going fast enough you can teleport through stuff.

Love the cute art style. A counter for your collected crystals would have been a nice addition. The ball does feel a bit floaty and I was able to fall through the map after ignoring the crystals and getting some immense speed.

The level design is the best part of your game imo. It's supper fun to just go really fast and try to avoid the trees, though this is not the objective :D

I wasn't expecting it to be so demanding on the CPU (?). I had like 15 fps and I mean, I know my PC lacks a better processor ( I got a 2nd gen i5) but it should have been capable of handling your game. I like the colours combination and the idea overall, very different from what I'm seeing. Keep up with it =)

I agree with AlekM, building up speed was super fun. I managed to get enough distance go past the portal!

The graphics were also very nice!

Hey saw this over on Making Games Together and now it pops up on my page. Figured I would give it a go. I see several suggestions I think could make this gold. I kind of want to see a mode where it measures the fastest speed or the highest height reached by the players. What you have is already a lot of emergent fun so leaning into that would be awesome.

Oh, I didn't think of the highest height, but I love that idea. I wanted to add a timer, and a pick up counter, but it's something I'm still learning to do. Next game hopefully. I'll keep iterating on this till I have a great one!

Cool psychedelic feels. You might want to consider using triggers in front and behind the ball that will spawn trees and objects, because right now it's pretty heavy on the computer to have everything loaded at once

The colors and low poly look combine to make for a very visually appealing experience, and ball-rolling games are always a ton of fun to play. Worked pretty well in the browser too.

The game was fun to play, trying to go as fast as possible but I flew out of the map and just kept going endlessly.

@blue-pin-studio Yep, you can press R to reset, but there are ways to get out of the map. I might make the "mountains" taller if I redo this.

I really love surrealism in games so this hit all the right buttons, the color palette choice is great. It's also really fun to try and go as fast as you can without falling out of the map.

Next time I think you should try experimenting with unity's material and shader systems to get some even more creative visuals, you can do some pretty exciting stuff just by playing around and breaking things!

It was nice to fly, it kinda goes with the flow. But I would suggest to add a background music and work a bit more on ball physic because it feels very unstable and also its quite unusual that you just fall down after hitting a wall but not ricochet at it would physically be.

I am in love with the aesthetic, it's so pretty!
Very much enjoyed speeding up and flying through the course trying to dodge trees at the last second. The ball is a challenge to control though.

Cute game and the colors are beautiful! It was fun to roll around and gather crystals. I'm thinking if we gathered the crystals then we would speed up a little more, because that's what I was feeling or maybe I'm wrong. I'm not sure if was suppose to be some kind of end goal, but even so, good job! :)

There was a lack of background music to give a mood. It would have made a huge difference. But for the first jam, and alone, you did a great job. Much better than my first time here. Congratulations and keep participating.

I managed to build up some luducris speed, combined with the looping was a lot of fun, weaving in and out of the trees. Awesome Job!

@sophiablabla I think I'm going to do that. I've already done some major tweeks to this prototype and made it run smoother, and flow better (not uploaded that yet though). I think I want to add more levels, structures, music, and the way to track how many crystals you collect. Level design is just so much fun.

It's visually cute, the palette is very nice.

But it has too much lag, and the movement was not fluid/dynamic as I would have expected.
I also was really disappointed that failure (falling) means you have to collect all again. And the level is also too long, making it hard to reach the end.
This two things combined made the mechanic of "loop through the level to get all the orbs" not working: one error and you have to start again, and also the level is so long that it seems a chore to collect them all.

The idea is cute and it is still an accomplishment to do a game in 72 hours, so keep going!

Edit:
As other have said, the only part where I had fun was in trying to reach the end going full speed to make it fast, avoiding to fall down or hit the tree. There is something they call "follow the fun" that means that when you create a game sometimes you see that what makes it fun is not what you wanted (collect the balls) and it could be a good idea to follow what make it fun (for me, going full speed to the end!) and focus the game on that.

@toccio94 Is giving some really good feedback here, +1. The fun for me is to trying to get through without crashing, colecting crystals is slow. Seems like it's lacking a ending, because it isn't very rewarding to colect crystals.

10. Oct 2020 · 06:55 UTC
@toccio94 just getting to the end definitely seems to be the best part. Plus those wide vistas seeing everything laid out before you is kind of awesome. good point about the restart. Maybe it should just take you back to the beginning without loosing progress....

Edit... Now that I know I can update things, I did some basic updates.

Cool game! It has some interesting visuals, could benefit from some more audio like some ambience. I think it was the most fun when going at really high speeds, but then its not really possible to collect anything.

Very nice visuals. Once long time ago I had a dream where a fairy looked something like this, composed of spheres, and was so delicate it would fall apart from my voice and then reassemble again.

All in all a nice stimuli, would benefit from a wide screen I think. As picking up things wasn't giving rewards, best fun after a while was running through a portal at high speed and then repeating with increased acceleration.

I didn't submit in time for LD, if you feel like giving my game a try the link is in my profile text.

I really enjoyed it, there was something really peaceful I found about it. One small bug was I did manage to launch myself pass the walls and then I was just stuck falling forever. That is really easy to fix. Great Game!

@ninnec You can press R to restart, but I'm not sure how high I'd have to make those walls because you can get going pretty fast on there.

I like the game a lot. I would say I would like a way to better handle momentum, since theres sometime where I cannot jump high enough, or reduce the speed enough to catch the points. Nonetheless I like it, could be a nice mobile experience adding speed by swapping up or reducing on swipe down.

[We played this on stream over the weekend!](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/780628065?t=00h10m02s)

I think you may find that we had a lot of fun with this one, but perhaps not for the reasons you intended. Personally, we found the ability to accumulate speed and momentum to be a blast, while picking up all of the individual tokens hampered our wacky antics (especially when the tokens reset after you die). Hopefully our tomfoolery is useful to you, and congrats on your first jam!!

@coleslaughter Awesome! Thanks for playing on stream. As soon as LD is over I'll be removing the crystals, adding more levels and music. Definitely following the fun :) Also adding the controls to the screen, you have to press R to restart when you manage to get off the map. But part of the fun my BF has is breaking out of the map, lol.
