Escape from LAB 2635 by Rein

[raw]
made by Rein for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

After experimenting on you extensively, the scientists of Lab 2635 seem to have abandoned you in this strange facility. You only have 30 seconds to escape, but time seems to function strangely here. Make your way through the trials hitting checkpoints to maintain progress and find your way to freedom!

This is a 2.5D top-down puzzle game with an emphasis on maximizing your efficiency. Some of the rooms may seem impossible to complete in time but give them a few attempts and you'll find yourself improving greatly each time. Made in Unity for Ludum Dare 47 by Chris Hutchinson and Robert Ramsay.

Well done! I did it in 36 loops (killing myself a few times to reset the timer).

I was interested because this reminded me of some of the random low poly PC games I played when I was a kid. It just didn't quite come together for me though. With such a small view and narrow walkway I didn't feel like I could dodge the lasers effectively.

good job! I feel like it could of used a nice techno beat to keep the pace going but other than that it was great. I got frustrated at first because I kept dying from lasers I couldn't see but I guess that was the point. Dying over and over again and learning how to get past the level through trial and error

Shockingly fun for a game where I consistently die the same way, over and over again! I like the mild weirdness of the look and feel, and the mechanics are solid. Took me a while to realize you could boost/jump in the direction you were facing, but not a big deal.

After hearing it approximately 200 times, the punch-smack sound when you die is going to be haunting my dreams 😆

Quite fun game! Took me 52 loops to finish.

It took me a few tries in the first area until I realized I had gotten the ability to shoot after getting the chest. And it would be easier to control if you could right click to use items in addition to pressing E. The jump was also a bit confusing since the guy doesn't turn around instantly, so you have to wait a while after looking in a direction before jumping.

A really good entry! The graphics and view reminded me of bomberman 64 which was a nice nostalgia trip. A game that I could see speedrunners being interested in with more levels and polish :)

Solid start. Could benefit from some play testing as dodging lasers you can't see at first on a narrow platform is a bit rough. Game looks very nice though and I think the idea could work well. Would love to see if you keep developing it.

@jefvel excellent idea about right-clicking. Was the monitor in the starting room what clued you in on how shooting worked, or something else? After you've opened the first chest the monitor goes from blank to showing a mouse with the left-click highlighted, but I think having some kind of indicator that the first chest is you picking up the shoot ability would have helped that a lot. Also, great point on the turn speed. We got used to it during development but it really doesn't make sense for twin-stick controls to have a slow turn speed.

Really funny character design, was rooting for the guy every time he went into the acid or blasted by a laser.

Enoyed playing it, 45 loops to finish! Funny concept, nice graphics and sound effects (maybe a bit too monotonous, you can try to add a simple anxious music). Good work!

Really cool game! I loved the low-poly character model, and the laboratory setting was really nice looking too! I enjoyed the death sound effect, ha! Great work all around.

The controls are a little bit too "raw". You move too instantly and the jump is hard to handle.
There is also a lack of ambiant music that make the game "empty" when there is no lazer sounds.

@tenshi42 I agree. We were a bit too ambitious with the scope and we ran out of time to refine the controls, find suitable music, and fully skin all of the rooms. It's encouraging to see feedback like yours that validates some of my own concerns and the criticisms of others.

because of the limited view it made it very difficult to anticipate the lasers which made it more of a pattern memorization game. that's fine, but probably not what you were going for. i would have added a checkpoint or two if you are going to make it that hard. thanks for making the game.

@paulhocker the first room is definitely a little too hard, especially for an introduction room. There are checkpoints after you complete each room (there are 6 rooms in total). Dying is a mechanic of the game; dying helps you learn from your mistakes, or learn patterns, or gain insights into puzzles. I would like to encourage you and others who struggle with the first room to stick with it a little longer because you might enjoy the other puzzles / challenges that are ahead. In any case, I do agree with you and I consider it a lesson learned for the next event. Thanks for playing!

Very nice! It took me a while to get the hang of the controls, but once I figured them out I fully enjoyed this game!

very hard game! I agree with the controls feeling a bit off, but it was still managable until checkpoint 2 (I think). I think the learning curve turns funnily to really-easy-mode with the challenge after checkpoint 3. Checkpoint 4 was... a lot in a very short time frame, and while I did try my best, I did give up after falling through the world after dashing:

Still, I did enjoy my time playing it a lot! :D

Nice game but very hard. I got stuck in place 3 times after respawning and had to restart the game.
