Flame Bearer by canti

[raw]
made by canti for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

FlameBeGif.gif

A flame bearer has fallen into a cave where you find him taking his last breath to reignite the flame. It's up to you to see so the flame reaches its final destination.

Controls: mouse

(works on the phone too but kinda wonky)

Did not manage to put in any sounds or music unfortunately and there is no ending :/

I will however continue working on this! I have so many ideas that didn't make it into the game. Until then, enjoy this proof of concept!

Wondeful graphic design, I love your palette! The game has a really nice mood.
Does it end with the "Hmmm?" though? I did not find a way to progress.

@purrseus Aw Yiss! Thank you! :D The only hint I can give you is that the skellington in that room looks awfully suspicious ;)

@fireshake Thank youu! I am going to continue working on this because it's like the first time I've made gameplay that I'm actually confident in. :3c

I love the style of this game, very atmospheric! The art is well done, I liked how the fire would light the area up. Overall super solid game :) Really well made, I'd love to play more games like this

Nice concept and beautiful pleasant visuals and execution, had a torch concept idea when reading the theme but this one would have killed it, really liked *the twist feature* introduction and the "Aaaaaaah" along the way!

Cool concept and graphics! Although when I exited the 'dungeon' my torch disappeared and couldn't keep going. I also feel like the torch stopping so much on the collision with the walls was a bit too frustrating. But overall very cool game. Good job!

Hey ! I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong, but I could not get this to run in the browser. Please verify this, we really want to play it , especially considering the pretty teaser-graphics !

Cool concept and great art! At times the collision of the torch with walls made it a little frustrating to move around but I loved the premise and how much personality this had. Great stuff! :)

Too bad you couldn't finish it. I think even a simple black screen with 'The end' would be better than to not have any ending at all. That way the player is more satisfied because it completed something. It looks nice though! It's very satisfying to light all those things on fire. And interesting how you it's a dungeon game where you move the character with the mouse. Better luck next time on finishing the game!

I love this kind of graphic. Also narration is cute! But I feel little uncomfortable with controls. Blocking walls makes dropping torch.. it's pretty annoying to me when crossing narrow pass. although it's great game!

Very cool and fun game! Loved the art and especially the color palette. The level design was great with some nice hints and smooth learning curve. Dunno what the deal with the bats was near the end. Was there some kind of puzzle that I needed to trap them in the side rooms or what? Cause I did trap majority of them and the last one decided to head north and not come back so I followed him and never returned to the "puzzle" itself.

Obviously the lack of any audio was a letdown. The game already had a nice and relaxing (albeit, a bit ominous) and some ambient music and nice soundscape would have enhanced it even more. And seeing that it was a jam game and not compo, you could have even used some third party stuff. Of course you'd need to opt out of audio category (which you did anyway) but I'm like 100 percent sure that it would have increased your mood rating. Probably overall too.

Why did you submit to jam instead of compo? Just a time thing?

The end room was kinda neat. But its coolness was hindered a bit by the fact that first time I arrived there, I went too close to the south edge and was clipped to almost the beginning of the game. Quick run back to the end room and I managed to decipher the message and dumb me then decided to repeat the clipping process on the right edge of the screen. But the camera didn't follow there and the torch was lost forever.

My biggest annoyance was how the torch always dropped on screen transitions. Well I say always but there was this bug where it didn't and you didn't have to hold down the button to carry anymore. And it was actually better that way in my opinion.

Glad to hear that you are planning on taking this further. The base mechanic is simple yet flexible enough to build tons and tons of different neat puzzles around it. And the mechanic can be quite easily extended too so it doesn't get too boring. Something like different color flames or having multiple torches.

Awesome job! It was short and sweet and left me wanting for more...

Great art! gameplay is fun. you delievered a great short experience.

I think that the drop mechanic is a bit harsh but it wasn't a dealbreaker for me, I assume it's to give the game an electric maze twist.

I liked the burning leaves mechanics and I'd hope to see more uses for the flame should you choose to continue to work on it. Good game!

It's a nice game, it's full of atmosphere and the art is really great. I encountered several bugs that prevented me from finishing the game - the torch sometimes disappears, or stops responding (I'm using a mac). overall it was enjoyable. Good job :)
