Loopwise by Baran

[raw]
made by Baran for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Loopwise is a game where you play the wizard named Loopwise, who tries to break out of -seemingly infinite- while loops by defeating cute little monsters with numbers by using his magic skills: +=, -=, *=, /= and //

This is my first game jam, I hope I'm delivering an adequate experience to you. Your comments are very valuable to me.

Here is a gameplay video of my game:

Had tons of fun!
This is the right *loop* coders are looking for!

Great and fun game. Loved the coding loops and also the graphics. Nicly done.

Excellent game. Would prefer to change the operator by pressing the operator on the keyboard. Cycling through them using tab is soooo slow.

I really liked this game! Took me a bit to grasp the concept, but after I got it the game became really addictive. One thing I would have liked to see is a way to choose the previous operator.

Lovely graphics style and overall concept, looking forward to more levels! Also liked that last level, the win condtiion takes some time to satisfy.

Really nice concept! Would be cool to play more levels, and maybe it would be more challenging without CommentOut operator but with simpler conditions (for level 4 and beyond)

It's really polished and nice! Didn't manage to get out of the loop though. Is there like an ending if you finished all while loops?

@todd-mitchell Thank you so much for playing my game!!

Creative approach to the theme! I like it, but I feel like the "Comment Out" is a little OP.
Nice job!

@stlunatick Thank you so much!! Actually if you finish all four levels, game just starts over, it is another loop in some sense

ok I did not put the effort it requires but != 256 definetly owned me.
Very nice idea, an elite idea. Well thought and realized. Cheers up!

@bajtix Thanks for playing!! You are probably right about Comment Out operator, it is much more suited to != levels, but op for others!

It was really nice! The != 256 was really funny to achieve. After a while I think I got a little bug where the levels kept cicling without actually selecting any of them, or maybe it was the end. Still a lot of fun!

Great idea. I'd have preferred the attack animation to be a bit quicker, and on the !=256 level I found myself commenting out everything until the right number popped up. Also seemed to softlock with continuous new levels, or was that the joke? Either way, charming aesthetic and premise. Great job!

@athryell Thanks!! Yes that behavior was intentional for players want to continue, which is another while loop in some sense!

So much fun. It's a well paced action/puzzler. I initially thought the numbers where HP, then I saw what was going on - which I mean to say in a good way, it was an exciting revelation. Great job. The CRT style graphics suit it perfectly. A very audible YES was bellowed when I finally got 256.

This is great. Once the mechanic settled in my mind I had a lot of fun and the challenges of each level was great.

That was super fun! Great idea

It think I completed it, at the end it just keeps looping?

I love programming-themed games! This is a great idea, very funny! I like a lot the minimalistic presentation, even thought the shaking is a bit too much for my liking. The attack system is a very clever idea, and I'd love to see the concept more explored!

@netmute Yes! The game has another loop that no one can escape if I don't add more levels  . After all, aren't we all live in a loop that is contained by a loop?

@toulou Ahh you can't imagine how much time I spent on trying to get the camera-shake right, I hope I can get it right next time! Thank you for spending time on my game!

Nice and very insteresting! The attack animation is a bit too long although and that makes the whole gameplay a bit slow but at least everything looks super nice and polished. Great job!

I really enjoyed the graphics very much and over all it felt very polished. Well Done!

Critique:
Music Please!
Please move the cycle button from the tab key. When I use the tab key I have to move my hand away from WASD and the spacebar which interrupts the gaming experience. The current set up only requires one hand, alter it to use both hands and you will engage the player more. for example you could control it using the arrow keys; when no key is held down it defaults to Comment Out // when you hold down one of the arrow keys a different operator is selected.
Also I would like it if when you zap a baddie the score appears as floating numbers above their head for a second. Graphical feedback is fun and it will help new players figure out what is happening.

I really enjoyed the graphics, i think you really nailed the old school Dos looking screen, other than that i think Votron (person above me) nailed the critique and would love to see those types of features added, at least moving the swapper from tab to j or something, having both hands on the keyboard
