Barrel Roll by SpaceGuy99

[raw]
made by SpaceGuy99 for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

You are a box. This box, in fact- Boxy_Boi.png

As a box, you are surrounded by other boxes, and your life is pretty boring. That is, until the autopiliot, sick of flying straight, decides to start going on loops in the plane. You, The Box, decide to take back the plane from the rogue autopiliot, navigating the tumultuous insides of a looping plane.

Welcome to Barrel Roll, a frustration-inducing platformer centered around the mechanic of spinning levels. The AI of a gigantic aircraft has gone rogue, killed all of the crew, and the plane is looping down towards the ground. Playing as a sentient box, you must navigate through the spinning interior of the plane, and right the course of the plane, thus saving your box friends

In each level, your goal is to get the key,

get to the door,

and get out, as the plane spins around you. Along the way, you'll have to contend with spikes, lasers, and the most deadly and stereotypical threat of all, moving platforms.

All pixel art was hand-made during the jam, as was music.

Made by a Five Person team for Ludum Dare 47.

When I try to download the Windows build, google drive prompts me to request access to the file. This is probably deterring people from playing the game. If you manage to make it truly public, let me know!

Frustration-inducing is a good term, and used in a good way, but the floaty jumps and ability to stick to walls help deter that. The controls really make this work and allow you to have fun in the stressful environment. The only thing I'd suggest is the zone that the camera has to be into move to the next room could be pushed back, as I found myself dying a lot in level 2 because I couldn't see the laser I was running into

Good game, controls are smooth, and the quick death screens are a nice feature.
Unfortunately if the door closes on you, you can't do anything except close the game.

> frustration-inducing platformer

Well, it kinda is :) In a good way. I wonder who allowed to transport all those spikes by a plane? The game is pretty challenging. I was tried to move some boxes between levels and accidentally get locked in a previous room while camera moved to the next one.

@bootak @finalforeach I hear you-- luckily submission isn't for another 5 hours-- I've pushed a modified build where R resets your character to avoid frustration

@p-brighenti we spent so much time on ironing out the movement-- glad it turned out good. It had to be physics based because of the nature of the game, so a lot of work went in to refining it

Very fun, but very hard. I really enjoyed myself and the levels were overall good. I personally would have preferred the jumps to be a little less floaty, but that's all personal preference and I can see why you settled where you did on that.

Great job!

Solid entry overall, great fun with a very innovative take on the theme. Gameplay felt smooth and the objective of the game was quite clear. Was definitely a bit hard at times, but very enjoyable!

Cool idea, the rotation mechanic is a little nauseating to me but I love the experimental vibe this game radiates. Good job!

I like the concept of running in something that turn around, gravity effect is funny and this game remind me of supermeat boy.
Maybe it will be better if the camera follow us any time no only on room change.
Any way well done I have fun playing this :)

My head is still spinning... I'm really bad at this game, but enjoyed it anyways. Gameplay is well executed and the spinning thing is great both in terms of challenge and feel. Good polish too, i like the environment work. Well done !

I found myself getting stuck on the ground/walls in odd ways more than I would like but the core concept and the visual style are really good. Nice job :)

Its a good game, I woulda liked to play longer, but I think the controls are a bit too slippy for my taste..

I think it's a good idea.
But the camera rotation makes me so dizzy.
It's hard to know where I'm going because the direction of the character manipulation changes suddenly.
