Buddy Rope by mbc

[raw]
made by mbc for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

In this game you control a duo tied together by a love rope. Keep your monster and your connection alive!

Your movement keys / joystick input will control the small character's movement. The jump button (space on keyboard or mouse click) will cause your big buddy to leap.

Don't let enemies or hazards touch the rope! You can tackle or squash enemies to destroy them. Your monster can only live so long without food. Eat fruit to restore time.

There are 7 levels of increasing difficulty and a challenge mode with a shorter timer.

slam.png ouch.png ----CHANGELOG----- 1.1 - (Probably) fixed a game breaking bug where no rope would appear and no movement would happen.

Nice job! I like the giant pet for the little person. Very cute. It gets a little tiring to press the space bar so much, but it does give you the sense of having to get the pair to cooperate (vs the pet just automatically hopping every now and then).

The SFX were awesome. The bouncy giant blue thing is cool and makes for some interesting gameplay. My favourite part was needing to get some food out of a small gap in the wall with the little guy so the big blue thing could eat it! Well done!

I liked the cute style and core mechanic.

Retrying the level was broken for me however; no rope appeared and I couldn't move.

Running against the clock to get food really conveys the ludum dare theme but I found the movement quite tiring with all the space presses, I think it would have worked a lot better with mouse controls.

Great intro overall!

This has such fun movement! I like the hefty BOOF sounds the big guy makes as you yank him around. I wonder how it would feel if you had a little air control mid-jump? Anyway - Very good

For some reason I found the small guys really well animated, if that makes sense. Even though it's pretty much a static sprite that points towards where you're moving, but its blank expression went very well together with the fact that he's trying to coordinate a massive beast that is always hungry. The fact that it was expressionless gave it a very resigned look, which went together with the them really well.

I mostly ignored the enemies, time/food was the thing that had me most worries throughout.

Nice game!!

New type of player control. Also like the sound of the big guy jumping.

The control are really nice, very good idea. Really satisfying overall, i somehow find that trying to get the food sometimes made me loose momentum and loose time overall, so i often found myself aiming straight for exit.

I love the core mechanic and how it feels to move around the world! I really enjoyed the sections where you had to use the little buddy to push the fruit that the big buddy couldn't reach. Very fun idea

Really interesting control scheme. I absolutely love the boof sound effect of the blueberry looking buddy when he jumps it has just the right amount of crunchiness to make it very satisfying.

Cool concept. The controls are innovative, but could use a little bit more work I think. The big guy doesn't change direction very easily when you're hopping in a line, and doesn't quite slide into place on narrow passages very well. But that might be part of the intentional challenge. The sounds were simple but pretty perfect, especially the "chonk" of the big guy landing a hop. Combined with the smoke puffs, it was very satisfying. I was also mashing my keyboard way harder than I needed to, I "felt" the rope pulling. Quite an awesome entry!

The bouncy blob was cute and the effect was nice. I had a few control issues where he didn't go where I was expecting him to, but I had fun trying to get to level 2. Good job.

I like it when games try unusual mechanics - nice!

If you continue to work on the game, I'd suggest to rebalance the amount of time food gives you. I failed the first level multiple times while going for food, and only managed to beat it when I completely ignored it and headed straight for the exit. The first level seemed much harder to me time-wise than the couple levels after that too!

The graphics work well, and so does the sound. All in all, a solid entry. Well done!

It did not feel there was enough time to complete the level but I enjoyed bouncing around and navigating the level.

Hey there! I liked the core mechanic in your game. I think its a really interesting concept, and if you wanted you could make a whole game with that idea if you expanded on it. I did get stuck trying to go through narrow sections and the big one wouldn't go. It looked like I could be able to, but the big one was too big. I feel like you could make it so he could fit and then you could add sections with a tiny door for the small one if you didnt want the big one getting through. You could aslo add more sections where the little one has to push things to get by. Anyways, I think you did a great job! Nice work!
