Keep the campfire alive by 1257th or nothing

[raw]
made by 1257th or nothing for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

You're a young scout camping alone in the forest. You are afraid of the night, but have a nice campfire to appease you till dawn. Just be sure to feed it regularly with wood to keep it alive, or you'll be VERY afraid.

Play with arrows, space to load or drop wood. The stress bar on the top should not fill completely. The night lasts about 2 minutes, try to reach the dawn...

It's a nice game. Moody and fits the theme. Good job!

Nice gameplay, graphics and sound. I'm no more afraid at night now ...
For those trying this game, it's worth trying to reach the end of the night.

Having a stress meter instead of a health bar for a game like this where you're trying to outlast a timer was a great idea! :) It was nice to be able to "reset" yourself after a mistake, instead of feeling locked in to a run where you have very little health.

I ran into two issues that killed me in frustrating ways. On my first playthrough, halfway in, I stopped being able to place the firewood that I was carrying into the fire, and ended up dying because my fire went out. On another playthrough, I died as the sun was rising, because firewood stopped respawning. :(

It would have been nice to have a progress meter telling you how close you were to sunrise - It was hard to feel motivated to try again when I wasn't sure how much longer I would need to last in order to win. Letting the player see how close they were to victory would help them stay engaged, and give them that feeling of, "Okay, I almost had this, I need to try again!"

I like the idea of a game like this when there is no real danger, but only fear. I like the style, but the animation of the character seems to be wrong most of the time. He has a log in his arms after he gave it to the fire.

Not very easy to move the character on the platforms, perhaps the level design must be a bit adjusted. but the gameplay is simple and interesting. The night ambiance is well rendered. And completely in the theme. Nice job!

I like the environment sounds and the art style wasn't bad either. I also like the transition to day, that could've been a lot of work for only a couple of seconds.

Controll was a bit janky, but the game was fine. First time I loose because I don't fully undertand game mechanics. Thank you for your entry! It was fun to play.

Took me 3 or 4 tries to finally survive the night. Quite tricky to get past all these bats for the higher up pieces of wood! And as others have mentioned, controls need a little getting used to, but 5 or so minutes of training seem to be enough to get along in the level.

Sound and atmosphere is quite good and I appreciate you kept the game as brief as made sense given the availble mechanics. :)

Neat game. I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/NFvpzo131Hc

@koolruz Yes, we still have some bugs, especially with animations when carrying wood.
And a timer is definitively missing.
Thanks for your comments

We indeed have some control issues. We made them better in a new release (that we will not publish before the end of the jam, of course), and we still need to work on that.
It is more difficult than we though first ;)

@jupiter-hadley Thanks for your test!
Short, but very instructive to us about what is wrong in the gameplay.

It gave us a good boost to try to make it better.

Nice game, but I couldn't do much after picking up the first log. Nice use of audio and visual feedback to show the character being afraid though. I could feel the emotions coming through there which was great! Just at the start I couldn't seem to do anything

@adam-clayden Thank you for your message.

When you carry the log, go near the fire and press space to drop the wook in the fire.

@1257th-or-nothing I did do that but I couldn't jump over anything to get to the other logs. Maybe it was just my resolution or something
