Bioternity by Maskrosen

[raw]
made by Maskrosen for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Ecosystems can be sensitive and all species must be in balance. Flowers need sun and water to grow, but too much or too little and they might go extinct. No flowers means no food for the bees and the caterpillars, which then leads to not enough food for the birds. You know the drill.

Keep the ecosystem alive by adjusting the number of species in the world.

I absolutely love the graphics, the audio is also good. I loved kind of everything in the game, though I did not manage to win. I did not understand clearly how the species die and born, but that was fun. Also, I think the world varies to quickly and I just focused on the numbers instead of the neat graphics. I loved the game overall, good job!

An ecosystem simulation game is quite challenging to get just right. This is a very fair attempt to do so, but it might need a little extra work (for example a tutorial, other ecosystems etc). I loved the background music, but there are some game design issues that were "annoying" . For example, there is no way to cleanly exit the game and it is forced full screen. Also some buttons have unclear reprocussions, the "rain" button has no "off" switch, which could be confusing. Overall very interesting ! AND beautiful !

Hey @lilachoklad and @maskrosen!

I really would love to play your game, but when I try to open it on Windows 10, nothing happens! I also tried to run it as administrator but no luck either. Is there something I can do?

@doot I'm sorry the game did not start for you. What you could try is to have a look in the properties of the file and see if there is an unblock option at the bottom. Sometimes when extracting downloaded files windows decides to block them for security reasons. Another option could be to try to extract it using something like 7-zip since the built in windows unzip tool might do this kind of blocking.

no luck with either options... I tried all the compatibility settings I could, all the options, and also unzipping it with 7zip. I don't even get an error message so I cannot really help you more than that, sorry...

@doot Unfortunately I'm not sure what could be causing the issue then. What you could try is to run the jar (inside the app folder) directly through the command line if you have java installed and that might give you an error message telling what is going wrong. What kind of graphics card do you have?

Hey @maskrosen!
Launching the desktop-1.0 file directly with java launched the game. Thank you, the game is beautiful and I had to restart a few times before getting the equilibrium right.
Good job and thanks for the game! :bird:

got it running by opening the desktop-1.0.jar. Lost the first 2 tries until i started to think about what needed what to survive then it was pretty easy you just have to pyramid up the chain. i liked the simplicity of focusing on just a small micro-climate. I think this also lends itself to later introducing some human characters in the form of gardeners who have little romantic story beats and such over time to motivate further play.

I like the idea of a game about the ecosystem and i like games visual style. I really don't understand the gameplay, but I liked adding bees, flowers and birds to the world.
