Space Engine Janitor by kschmidt

[raw]
made by kschmidt for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Space travel is dangerous enough, but these pesky Kyrus Mites keep getting into the engines and stealing energy from our cores! Clear them out to keep our ship engines alive!

A game inspired by the 1996 Windows game "Rats"

SpaceEngineJanitorInstructions.png

Extra instructions: * Press ESC (escape) to get back to the main menu * You can scroll around the map by click and dragging with the right mouse button, or swipe around your touchpad if you have one

Known bugs: * Sometimes the Mites will escape the ship. You won't be able to finish the level when this happens - press ESC (escape) to get back to the main menu * "New Game" and "Continue" are confusing. "Continue" will start off with the level # you have selected "New Game" will always start Level 1. * The blockers are hard to see against the starry background. Oops!

I ran out of time to write leaderboard support, and add SFX and music. And a bunch of the art. Add effects for the energy drainers.

I used Godot 3.2.

More platforms coming soon!

Changelog: * 2020/02/21: Added an outline for the "blockers" so you can see them in the UI easier * 2020/02/22: Update mites navigation code so they shouldn't escape the ship anymore :)

Hi, it's a really nice game! I like the theme in that game :) There are two major things I think you should improve in your game:

- Make icons for the traps, it took me a couple of minutes to realize that these are the traps in the corner.

- Make the tutorial more intuitive, maybe create a tutorial level?

Overall, it's a good game :)

The mechanics are very good, but the graphics are generic and could not represent something, they make them look like a sample game. Also it's somewhat hard to figure out what to do, the tutorial is not very clear and the traps are hard to see, they are dark and the background too.

Anyway i have a good fun playing it.

GODOT is an incredible engine, more people usint is is great

Nice game! Sad you ran out of time and game has no sound, it would change much.

Pretty nice prototype! With a strong level design, it may become a good game ) Good job!

Great work on this entry!
One small note, the text is extremely hard to read on the mixed background like that, adding an outline would probably help a lot.

This is pretty cool! It definitely needs better graphics and maybe a tutorial level would work better instead of a block of text. Nonetheless, this is awesome :D

Good job making something complete with a start and end, multiple levels, and multiple mechanics. I had issues with the text and game area being extremely tiny (on a Macbook retina display) but it was still doable. I think the accomplishment here, either way, is pretty good.

The gameplay itself I found pretty frustrating and not super fun - it was hard to predict exactly where the surges would go in order to time my dropping of the traps. So I didn't feel like I could really plan, instead I was just clicking everywhere hoping they'd walk into it.

Very cool game. Very nice and neat art style. I didn't get how to place the traps, but it looks like if I would I would had a lot of fun playing this game.

hard to catch virus by trap - too big timeout to bang

@slimbun The traps are in the upper right, if you click on them your cursor will change, and then you can click in the level to place them. I hope you get a chance to play the game and to catch some Mites :)

@xart2012 that is part of the challenge of the game - in the later levels there are other types of traps and objects. I definitely agree it's too hard for a first level!

Cool game! It was depth with the various defences and levels, and the gameplay is relatively fun. The defences are well chosen and since they're so unique in their effect (not just damage, but slowing enemies down, taking back what they stole was great), it made the game fun and strategic. The instructions UI went off a bit on the web version but it was still easy to follow. I was mesmerised by the pixel star wallpaper. It looked amazing and made it feel like my screen was 4K or something! Some audio would be nice, and some more game feel with animated enemies or screenshake (just some ideas). Overall, nice game and good job!

Nice concept. The gray traps require some rather good timing and/or luck. Once you get the white traps the game gets too easy.

Cool game! Agree with others that a dynamic tutorial would serve well here.

Nice one! I'd like to learn from your "traps" to improve my game.
