Beet Roots Multi layered multi looping puzzle game :-) BeetRootsTitle.jpg

Story

Beet, the beetroot, has had enough. Hanging around at the bottom of a plant might be enough for some roots but not for him. So off he goes in search for freedom.

Gameplay

Beet moves around the world by himself. Your job is to assist him by providing the tools needed to make it across the level in one piece. Most of the time what Beet needs is a grenade or two or a parachute.

Failing to do so will loop beet back to the start of the level again, but without fixing any damage Beet has done.

Tip:

The world loops around on itself and you might need to use this to reach the exit.

Good luck!

How does this correlate to the theme?

Well.. Beets world loops around on itself. He's stuck in a rut and in a looped world, and it loops back to the start when he dies, and so on.. So there's a lot of looping going on;-)

Controls

Move around the world: Right-click on mouse and move around on screen or use 'WSAD' or the cursor keys. Use icons by clicking on them or by using the keys 0-9. Backspace or restart button to restart a level when you get stuck. Escape or exit button to exit to title screen.

Tools used in creating this multilayer, looping puzzle game:

Visual Studio 2019

SFML

Gimp

Magica Voxel (for the few things I had time to voxelize)

LMMS

Bfxr

If the game doesn't start because and you get some weird audio/OpenAl bug, please start by download OpenAL (you'll need it for other games aswell): https://openal.org/downloads/

If it's not that then it's usually that you don't have the Visual Studio 2019 redistributable installed on your computer yet (you should, a lot of games use it): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

Any chance of a Mac or Web build? I would love to give the game a try, but only have a Mac at my disposal

This reminds me so much of lemmings of when I was a kid. Enjoyed the gameplay and the visuals are fantastic!!

@amin-jk000 Download the OpenAL installer from https://openal.org/downloads/
You'll most likely need it for other games as well.

I agree with the others. It's a lot like lemmings, and I think the world needs more of it. This was very well done. I like the variety of tools and obstacles. I'm guessing that the + and - were meant to change the beet speed, and I would have really appreciated that. There were some long stretches in there that I would have sped up.

Definitely a strong lemmings vibe as others have said. The mouse camera movement was a little weird for me. I would have preferred hold and drag style but once I got used to it it was fine. Music loop was really nice and catchy. A fast forward button would have also been nice.

Have to agree, very much like lemmings and that is a very good thing! Great sound too. Well executed.

Major props for making a Lemmings-like game. I only have two major gripes: the camera controls feel very awkward, and a few of the levels spend more time waiting for the beet to plod towards his goal than on actual puzzle-solving.

Cool idea! The camera controls were a bit janky, would have been really nice to have a bigger game window and the ability to zoom in and out. I liked the graphics, reminded me of The Incredible Machine: Contraptions!

Cool concept, I like the use of looping in the level design, definitely makes for some clever and cool moments. I found the controls to be a bit awkward though, particularly the camera - I would expect click-and-drag behavior rather than moving the camera based on how far the cursor is from the center. Also I had a fairly bad bug where if I resized the window, the aspect ratio got messed up and the control bar on the right disappeared. My first attempt through the game was pretty weird since I didn't even realize it was supposed to be there, so I had to randomly try all the 0-9 keys to see what they did. It seems that there's no restriction on which abilities you can use when pressing the keys which made things even more confusing. (I was going to say you should restrict which abilities you can use from the start so the player can learn which is which, but that totally is the case if you use the UI so nice work there!) Despite these issues there's clearly a lot of good puzzle gameplay here, so nice work!

The design is the best part of this game. Figuring out what to do with the level to make it work was really interesting. It's also what makes the game really hard to, trying to figure out what to do! xD :D

Hi, there! :) I've completed your game and it has very good imperssion on me. I have to say that it is very creative use of the theme I've seen on this jam. Everything is looping.

The game is not polished I know, but it is not so important. I'll just list all issues I've found. Animations in the start screen are very quick. There is no pause or pause menu. The controls of camera are very stiff and sometimes unresponssive (I would increase their speed a bit.). The camera is not centered on the character then he dies. Music is too harsh for me, but fits visuals well.

I also impressed how many mechanics you've added into the game for a combo entry. Though levels are simple, but designed good. Great entry!

Added a bugfix that turns off screen resizing and other small bugs that don't really affect the gameplay:

Took me a bit to get into the game as the initial zip download failed and then I had to install OpenAL which I haven't needed until this entry but it was worth it when I got in. Really good entry!
