Me and My BEAST by Electric Blue

[raw]
made by Electric Blue for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Protect the BEAST from invading hunters!

Move the farmer and collect wheat for the BEAST (spacebar on wheat tile). Then, mount the BEAST (walk near BEAST) to ride it around! Walking uses up HUNGER, but if you have wheat while riding (yellow icons, right-side of screen), the BEAST'S HUNGER will replenish.

Full HUNGER will heal your HEALTH. HEALTH will only heal if the BEAST is STATIONARY.

HUNTERS will attack the BEAST. Ride the BEAST to squish the HUNTERS!

Controls: E = tutorial (while in title) WASD/Arrow keys = movement Spacebar = action (collect wheat/dismount BEAST)

Downloads: Should work on any computer, let me know if it doesn't. Click on dropbox URL, then click the download icon in the top right of the screen.

FIXED [My game runs WAY faster than intended on some computers. Unfortunately, I programmed this on a MacBook Air and designed the frame rate accordingly]

If you have a faster/good computer I would recommend the faster version download. If you have a slower computer (ex. MacBook Air) I recommend the slower version download.

Fixed the permission issue. Thanks for pointing it out.

I had to run it from my console in Windows with `java -jar LD46.jar` but got it going!

Got it working on linux. Incredibly fast paced, was hard to keep up with everything going on. I loved the graphics. I think if you slowed the enemy shooting down and maybe some hints when you can and can't pick up wheat it would go a long way. Well done though!

It worked for me (macOS). Neat game! I think the movement speed is too fast, and so are the hunters. (Oh just checked the description, apparently it's a known bug). Also I keep accidentally running into the best and mounting him when I don’t want to — maybe bind it to a key? Also tell me: the BEAST was definitely inspired by Appa, right? Hah! Good job :)

Yes the beast was inspired by Appa. I just watched all of Avatar so I had to do it.

Unfortunately, I programmed this on a MacBook Air and designed the frame rate accordingly.

I liked the concept, but the game was so sped up it was a bit unplayable. I know the problem come from the frame rate, but a touch unfortunate. Another note, I think a better graphic for the wheat would be nice, I thought they were fences at first.

Game speed is definitely too fast. The graphics are extremely charming though and I like the concept.

Couldn't play the game, some sort of bug or graphical glitch: https://imgur.com/a/ZMI9CDe

Love the sprites but a bit hard to play due to speed.

Game looks awesome, I'm getting the same issue as @simukas though on both builds you have up. On Windows 10 x64. There's an error with a few of the files when trying to extract the zip with explorer (bad parameter? might be the colon if that's part of the filenames) (w:tail.png, beast w:outlines.png, ._w:tail.png, ._beast w:outlines.png) and 7-zip extracts with no errors but the same graphical isses.

The game worked perfectly. Love the concept, it's missing a destination or any sort of goal beside surviving, but i enjoyed squishing those shameful hunters :smirk:. Well done overall !

I'm having the same problem as Ladislav, trees all over the screen. Windows 10 64bit, JRE 8.201

Very cool concept! I loved trampling over the tress with the beast. I kept getting overwhelmed after a couple minutes of play, but I assume that was intentional. I felt bad for the beast... he just wants to eat his wheat. Wish there was some way I could have saved him and "won" the game. Or maybe there was and I didn't figure it out?

Either way, I loved the dual mechanic of controlling the rider and the beast, each with different abilities. Very impressive for a short jam, and very creative. Also loved the pixel art. Great job!

I'm also having the tree problem that @ladislavodstrcil and @solweak are having

Either way I tried it out and thought it was a neat concept. Would like to try it again without trees blocking the view though haha. I'll refrain from rating until you have some kind of fix if you do make one

Fun concept! I really liked the graphics- the beast looks great in pixel art form. I tried my best to keep those darn bandits away from it but ultimately I was overwhelmed :( Good work overall!

I had permission issues as well as not sure how to actually run the game :( The art looks really good!

Also, the speed issue I think is related to this. I had a similar bug when I was making my game. You want to move the player/object like this
player.pos += (player.direction * player.speed * ds)
where ds is the change in time from one frame to another. This allows you to not have to worry about how fast your game runs based on the computes hardware.

this is for construct but here is a link. Searching for movement using delta time should also help.

stomping around with the beast was fun, the graphics are pretty cute
i felt kinda bad for it though being harassed by those hunters

automatically mounting the beast was kinda frustrating since i did it just about every time i would try to get to something below the beast after dismounting
