Escape! by toby1645

made by toby1645 for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

Welcome to Escape! A puzzle game that loops each time you die. If you’re in easy mode the room you’re in will simply reset and if you’re in hard mode you will loop back to the start of the game. Also, be careful! You may wonder into a room and find an unexpected surprise…

If you become stuck check out the walkthrough.txt file inside the game's folder.

Creator's note: I consider hard mode the real mode for the game.

11/4/2020 UPDATE: I created a Mac port for the game, it is now available for download from the game's itch.io page. I also removed the download links that direct to my website instead of itch.io. I figured having so many different download links could be a bit confusing.

1/19/2021 UPDATE: The game has been ported to HTML5. I finally got the HTML5 export module for Clickteam Fusion 2.5 (I used MMF2 Developer for this game, but I do own CF2.5 Standard) so now the game is available online and offline. Also rolling out with this port is also the version 1.0.1 patch that fixes a couple of bugs. The HTML5 version is available on Newgrounds, itch.io, and GameJolt.

3/9/2021 UPDATE: I added a direct link to the HTML5 version of the game on my website (as mentioned in previous updates though it is available on several other sites). I also added a link to the walkthrough so it can be viewed online.

Neat little action game! Reminds me of Cat Mario and similar trial-and-error games. I had fun with this one, and my biggest wish is that it could be even longer. Nice job!

Good job! I've liked your game very much, however I feel that I can add one thing or two to improve it:
-Male the player collider to be on his foot, it's really annoying (and not the kind o annoying that the game purposes to be part of it) when you "step" in a tile with your head;
-Add some more animations to the player;
-The puzzles needs to be a little bit more difficult to solve then dependent on "skill";
-Make some more rooms and publish it on newgrounds, I'll love to play more of it!

@m8rix Glad you had fun with the game! I do plan in the future to add some more levels to a post Ludum Dare version, and when I do I'll post an update here :)

@jonathanfdr Happy to hear you liked the game! I'm appreciative of the feedback and will be adding those suggestions to the post Ludum Dare version. Unfortunately the software I used to develop this game doesn't allow me to export to HTML so I wouldn't be able to post it to Newgrounds. However I plan to learn a new engine soon that does support HTML export so maybe in the future I'll rebuild it in that.

Liked the style of game. Looks plain, clear, without unnecessary elements.
Also cool puzzles. But I think some of them, umm, don't require your skill, it's just random.
Anyway, good job!

Neat game! As others have mentioned, it remind me of cat mario. I went through with easy mode, and I can only imagine having to reset after every death would be incredibly hard! I'm a huge fan of the later levels in Celeste, where it's a crazy long room and you keep making small amounts of progress as you get better- I wonder if there's some way to incorporate skill into this game, like Celeste, instead of just trial and error.

Cool game, and congrats on your first Ludum Dare!

I'm not a big fan of game where you need to die and retry in order to complete them.
Your got some interesting mechanics though.
At least in easy you can still finish most of the level very fast.
Hardest level for me was the "Watch your step" level.

This is a super simple and fun little game to play. I like the games simple visual style, and sound effects was overall okay. I would have liked the game to have some music. Overall a pretty good jam game. Well done.

@mrsamafu Thanks!

@dcrdro Thank you! Also yeah lol not all of them need skill, I should probably add some that require a bit more skill in a post Ludum Dare update :D

@blobo Thanks, glad to hear you liked it! Based on the feedback I've been getting here I think adding some more skill based levels into the post Ludum Dare version of the game. Reading your comment made me glad I added easy and hard mode because at one point hard mode was going to be the default and only mode! I figured that was a bit too cruel so I added the difficulty option. Anyway, thanks for the feedback, this was a great introduction to Ludum Dare for me!

@kirthos I figured the "Watch your step" level would be the hardest lol. There were going to be a few more levels with different puzzles but I ran into a bug that took a good chunk of my time on the last day for compo entries. Anyway, I know die and retry games aren't everybody's preference, but thanks for playing!

@jk5000 I agree some music would have been good, I just didn't have any time to make any in 48 hours. I made everything myself in the game (minus the actual engine, MMF2), including the font! I should probably add some music in the post Ludum Dare version. Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear it was fun!

Reminds me of "I wanna be the guy".

I hads some control problems though (not sure if they only happen in the java version) where the character stops when entering a new room (it won't move even if you keep the button down). This can be quite frustrating in some rooms :(

I eventually gave up (at the "Watch your step level"), as I was playing in hard mode and it's really frustrating to die in the "Run!" room multiple times becase your keys get stuck. If it wasn't for that, I would probably try to go further :)

As the comment above, it did make me think of I wanna be the guy. If that's what you were going for, great, but otherwise some puzzles didn't have any way to figure them out besides brute force, which I imagine is frustrating when playing on hard mode.

Either way, well done on completing a game for the jam!

@eugenik Thanks!

@jd557 Some of your complains may be a Java version issue. I believe MMF2's .jar files are compiled to launch on versions as early as 1.6 so I don't think it's the most up to date part of the software and in Fusion 2.5 it was deprecated. However I think the movement stopping when you enter a new room is an issue with the way I made the game. It's not actually one big map but actually separate scenes that get loaded when necessary, so it wasn't made to detect if a key was already being pressed down when exiting the previous room. I also figured the "Watch your step" level would be the hardest :) I'll see what I can do to fix those control issues in a post Ludum Dare update. I may actually remake it in Godot and port it to browser (on account of MMF2 being about 7 years out of date lol). Anyway, thanks for playing!

@raphiell Thanks for the feedback! I did make some to be more like puzzles but I also made some to be brute forced (I wanted it to be a mix of both but in retrospect I realize that most of it is brute force). So I'll try and add some more puzzle levels when I update the game.

I missed some music and other people already mentioned about "colliding with your head". Other than that, simple but enterntaining game. Good job!

@island-jam-2-group-3 yeah the head thing seems weird now but it didn't when I made it. Anyways I'm glad you liked it!

@guimoliveira nice :D

Cool game, the background helps a lot, Good sound effects. Dying and trying again can be frustrating at times, but it was also fun. Good job!
