Facility Z-13 by Jerm

[raw]
made by Jerm for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

This game is a simple simulation/survival game where you must keep a medical facility running to save the life of an alien inside. The buildings in the facility occasionally suffer malfunctions and you need to send robots to repair them. Also you need to keep power supplied to the buildings so they can operate.

My idea turned out to be too complex so I had to remove many things in order to make a "complete" game on time. So if the gameplay feels a bit unfinished then that is probably why :)

The UI is designed for a mobile screen, but it should work on any other device. Although I only tested in Firefox (desktop and mobile) so I'm not sure if it works in other browsers or not, and I only tested it on my phone which has a 1080x1920 screen so I don't know if it works on other screen sizes (let me know if you tried on another browser/screen size and if the game worked or not).

Also I did not have time to add a proper tutorial/instructions so I'll write them here:

User Interface

The top part of the user interface shows a bunch of status information from the simulation. The different status elements are: * Alien Life Signs - The health of the alien. If this gets to 0% then it's game over. * Time Left - The countdown until the medical procedure for the alien is complete. If this gets to 0 then you win the game. * Power * Gen: shows the amount of power being generated by the power plant. As the power plant becomes damaged it generates less power. * Use: shows the amount of power being used by other buildings. If this is more then the amount of power being generated then it will show in red. Power usage can be reduced by turning off power to buildings. * Robots - Shows how many idle and busy robots there are. Robots are busy if they are repairing a building, otherwise they are idle. * Manufactured Parts - How many "parts" are in storage. These are created by the Manufacturing building and are used up when repairing buildings.

The bottom part of the user interface shows a map of the facility and each building has a health bar next to it. You can click/tap on a building to show more information and perform actions with the building (such as repairing or turning on/off power).

Gameplay

Buildings in the game will occasionally have a malfunction. When this happens the "health bar" next to the building will decrease (I was going to add notifications when this happened, but ran out of time).

To repair a building that has had a malfunction, click on it and then click the "Assign Robot To Repair" button (this button will only show if there are any idle robots). The building will now repair gradually as long as there are Manufactured Parts in storage. You can also click the "Remove Repair Robot" button to stop a robot from repairing a building (this can be useful if you wish to repair another building instead). More than 1 robot can be assigned to repair a building.

Buildings need power to operate. Power is generated by the Power Plant, but if it has a malfunction then this will reduce the amount of power generated. Buildings will operate at a reduced level if they aren't receiving enough power (damaged buildings are also limited in how much power they can receive). Power to a building can be turned off which will free up power to be supplied to the other buildings. To do this, click on a building and click the "Turn Off Power" button. You can turn power back on in the same way.

Building Types

  • Medical Building - This is where the alien is undergoing the medical procedure. If this building is not receiving enough power then the alien life signs will decrease. If it is fully powered then the alien life signs will increase again.
  • Manufacturing - This building produces parts needed to repair buildings. It will produce parts proportional to how much power it is receiving.
  • Robot Construction - This building doesn't do anything currently :(
  • Power Plant - This building generates power proportional to how "healthy" it is.

Too bad It's not complete. Kind of felt horrible when those buldings started to go down. I wish I had more Robots. ajajjajaja.

Interesting game!! I see you had some troubles with timing, we found it hard to achieve it ourselves and we were 6! Lol.
I played it on windows 8 in chrome explorer and it worked great.
Te idea is well introduced and the playability is very different to the other 125252 games i've played in the last hour lol.
I didnt like how unpredictable machine broke, but i guess that happens in real life as well.

Cool entry. Complexity is hard to manage in these game jams :)

The intro is great, with a lot of power. The story made me think about working directly with the alien! I really like graphics copying old CRT like screens. Also, although mechanics are simple, it was well balanced.

Really simple but cool aesthetic, hope the robot construction works in a future version.

The game is good, but I think it would be better if it was a bit faster. Maybe add a few more buildings, without making it too complex.

Even if this game's unfinished, i liked how much you did with so less, the game lacks some things but i really think that i can end it just the way it is... I just don't have enough patience :(

Cool game! Liked the graphics. Some soundFX could be a lot better ( even simple beeps could do the job ). Well done...

The games atmosphere was great! The game`s graphics were nice. The game stuck to the theme pretty well(At least what I understood of the game). The game was hard too understand(Could have used a tutorial). Audio would have been nice. The game over all was okay. Keep making games too improve!

Good attempt! I died with about one minute left, but honestly I don't really see what I could've done differently, so it didn't really feel like it was my fault I lost. Oh well! Nice work either way, I liked the aesthetics!

took a while to get a hang of the balance, wasn't 100% sure on what I'm suppose to balance between delegating repairs and offset power-cylcing between the units.. Somehow the minimal interface approached worked, I thought additional status-symbols (for robo-repair delegates) could have made it more clear in the 'perfect-information' premise(all things shown on single-screen).
