Loop Run by Iron Leonem

[raw]
made by Iron Leonem for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

Loop Run was an attempt to add puzzles to an autorunner! Instead of randomly assigning segments, we went for a fixed... well, loop... of scenes, with keys to collect and a door to enter! It was a very fun project, and very challenging- our first Unity project! Space jumps, M mutes or unmutes the music, and escape opens a menu with a level selection.

Nice game!

This game did go well with the theme. Can't argue with that. The game was fine. Liked how it was a set path rather than just random platforms. Having a puzzle element was a nice touch. My only suggestion would be having the ability to turn around. Good job!

@no-grapes-games The ability to turn around is a very interesting suggestion! The levels were designed to be iterative- part of the game was having to start from the first panel and keep moving, so using turn-around mechanics would have a dramatic effect on our design. Not a bad idea at all, but a different experience... I'll have to experiment! Thanks for your feedback.

@iron-leonem I didn't even realize it was looping until you pointed it out in that comment, so you probably should have mentioned that in the description. Anyways, after I figured out what was going on the game was kinda interesting. I thought the mood was accomplished well. For your first game made in Unity, I'd say it's pretty impressive, especially considering it was made in only three days, so good job!

P.S. For game jams, you always want to supply a browser playable version if you can. To do this in Unity, you go file/build settings and then you can choose WebGL, which is Unitys browser playable build.

@cwazywierdo Great comments, thanks! I was hoping that the gameplay would give away that it was a loop as you played through- sorry that didn't come across well! I tried building a WebGL version, but for some reason, Unity crashes every time I try ;_; I'll give it another shot though. Thanks for the review!

Good job! Gameplay is very intuitive. The second level was well thought out, just the right amount of difficulty.

Suggestions:
- Add a bit of backstory to help improve the mood and highlight the theme of looping
- The third level is too easy
- There is a bug where you can double/triple jump and go really high

Would love to play more levels!

The painting is good and the music is good.
When I hold down the space, the character jumps out of the screen.(a bug?)

The idea is simple (find keys and open the doors in a looping level), but it work very well, a pretty good runner/platformer with good ideas of level design.
Graphics and music is good support too the concept. Nice work.

This is a terrific idea. I think the addition of a minimap and an indicator of how many keys you have/need to allow for route planning would break open its potential, but it's engaging as-is. I ran into the aforementioned jumping bugs, but they weren't game-breaking--I didn't mind an occasional double-jump. Way to go on your first Unity project!

(One more thing: if your game uses the space bar, make sure to change Navigation from Automatic to None on your pause button! Leaving it as Automatic makes the space bar "click" the pause button when the button is highlighted.)

Very nice first Unity project and an interesting take on the autorunning genre.

Combining an endless runner with a puzzle game is a really interesting idea. It was fun seeing how my choices on one run through the loop affected subsequent loops. However, the endless runner side of the game is punishing (as endless runners usually are), so I spent a lot of time retreading ground because an execution mistake or physics bug caused my death. I think it would be helpful if the jumps were shorter and fixed-height, and if they player could see more of the environment at once.

The only thing I didn't like was the length of the levels, it will take a lot of time to get through a new loop in case of an error. Overall I liked the implementation of the theme. Nice work

Thank you all for your comments! I'm aware of the jump bug- working to fix that now. I'm really interested in developing this either as a cheap puzzler on Steam, or as a mobile game (After doing a proper meta level design pass and throwing in a couple dozen more levels xD)

Nice concept, I got to see panties so there is that.

Some polishing to do but seems very promising

The idea is good, I enjoyed to play it.. Quite hard for me to take the keys in the second level. Good Job

Watched this played on TheSunOfMorning's channel, so I just rate based on the stream. Cool game, cool level design, I dig it!

This was super neat - I had no idea these genres could mash together so well. Kudos on that! I think my issues with this largely stem from the lack of polish, though. I kept making slight mistakes that caused me to reset and it took too long to get back to where I was, which got frustrating after a while. Maybe giving the player more control over the height of their jump could be a good way to take the blame off the game and put it on the player?

Either way, this was a really cool entry and the puzzles seemed really good. Good job!

It is a very nice take on the theme. I loved the animations of a main character (really, really cool!) and all three levels were interestingly built. There are some problems / tiny bugs with gameplay:
- often when you touch an edge of any platform (or cage) the game treats that as "you died" and resets the level;
- in the third level there was one platform on the bottom that caused my character to juuuuuuump sooooo high that once she even left the game screen and I had a game without a protagonist for something like 5 seconds. I expect she jumped so high that it took her a while to fall back to earth :laughing: It was happening only in the third level and only on one of those bottom platforms;
- sometimes the character got stuck in the top phase of jumping animation (with legs folded under her). That sort of bugged the next jump you made as it made it last longer (character was first finishing the previous jump animation and only then starting the next one).

I also met a visual bug - my settings icon background was huge and appropriated quite a bit of screen

@fabula-rasa Thank you for all the feedback- I did exactly 0 UI anchoring- I honestly forgot about it until after I had published the build o-o;; Everything else has definitely been noted, thank you for your feedback! I'm thinking if we do a full post-LD build, I'm going to rip out all the physics that unity comes with and implement raycasting platformer pseudo-physics- Much more reliable. I really appreciate you taking the time to try my game <3

I too encountered the visual bug mentioned above which made it a little harder to see some sections but I was able to play the game. I like the idea since it would really feel like you are stuck in a loop but sadly I felt to feel a sense of progression/goal. I know this is challenging considering the idea is you are stuck in a loop but maybe a cool thing is that as you wrap around the level you can collect things to make the next loop easier and once you've done enough you can progress to the next loop.

Maybe that's there and I missed. Still, good job

Really interesting idea. I wouldn't have thought to make an auto runner with this theme, but it works super well. There were a couple places where the audio very obviously looped, but with this theme I guess I can't fault that lol. The sound effects really sold the action, which is good. Overall really fun and stuck to the prompt well. The only thing I didn't like were some of the, uhm, interesting sprite choices

I find the game super interesting! It's a simple concept but you've embellished it with good ideas.

Hi, there! :) I've managed to complete 2 levels and I decided I won't stay longer and closed the game. It is too unforgiving. I like that the concept of your game is somehow close to mine, but you managed to add much more clever puzzles and it is very inspiring to me! I like level design very much, but the gameplay with restarting on slightest error is very unforgiving, as I've already mentioned. The setting is interesting, thought very basic.

I also thought that it could be nice if you could restart the game on R button, but it is not a big deal as you can kill yourself easily and restart it.

Anyway, congratulations on your first Unity project! You're game is challenging for me, but has some interesting use of mechanics.

It felt like the character is increasing and decreasing speed at random, or at least going faster when airborne, which makes little sense to me. That also made controls unnecessarilly tricky, as your jump distance varied greatly and I sometimes jumped way over intended platform to my death.

The idea of looping runner is very clever and you managed to add mechanics that go well with the concept and improve it well! With a little more work this could be very addictive experience! Congratulations!

Your loop game is attracting with its generic musics and effect sounds. By missing doors you have to keep going on the same patterns but if you catch the doors there are different adventures. I like the idea.

Nice game, but I gave up in the second level. :unamused:
