Loop Train by OddSocks

[raw]
made by OddSocks for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

I found this a tricky theme! Leading up to this LDJAM I had an idea of what I was going to do, which isn't my normal plan of attack... regardless, the pre planned idea didn't fit at all with the theme! So instead I've made a game loosely based on an Adventure Time episode called Dungeon Train. You are stuck in an infinite loop traveling through the train carriages. Each time you progress forwards, the enemies get a little bit harder.

LD47-1.png

I had a lot of things planned, such as an inventory, changeable armour, lots more scenery etc... but you know... time!

Move: A,D - left and right arrow keys Jump: W - up arrow key Attack: Space

Health potions restore 20% of you health. If you health is full, they will give you some experience.

Experience effects your attack power. And your health increases as you progress through the carriages.

There is a lack of balance... just to warn you!

Hope you enjoy it :D

This one is addictive! Really nice! I loved the graphics a lot and I spent playing it more time than I'm willing to admit :D

I love the graphics and the idea! Well done! I think it's a bit too easy though, that makes it very repetitive after some time :) Also the spacebar not for jumping took me really some time to get use to! ^^

@upsitesdown @tamail Thank you both for playing it. I wish I had managed to fix the exponential increase in the enemies attacks. It needed a lot more balancing.
Yeah, the space key as an attack was an odd choice. Perhaps I should have used ctrl for attack? Hindsight!!

I really like the graphics (including the background), although the game does get a bit boring after a while. Also, the bell sound when you get hit by the enemies is funny.

Cool game. I like the sounds and the music. What about killing ennemies by jumping on them like in Mario ? Maybe it wouldn't fit your core gameplay though.

The pixel art is nice, especially the background one!
The true enemy here are the crates, so hard to destroy ahah
A bit too repetitive tho, but in 72 hours it's still a nice accomplishment

Nice graphics, but maybe I didn't understand the game or something because just clicking right and attack got me to over 300 xp. The enemies always hit me first, so I didn't know there were alternate strategys, or something. I think adding some kind of gameplay challenge would have been nice.

Cool little game! Pretty graphics and sounds. It was fun that I could literally avoid the enemies by pushing the crates until the end of the level. But of course I played it the way it is intended, and after a few levels it got too hard, I think. As soon as I faced the enemy, he would attack in a way I couldn't defend myself.
But still, beautiful game man!

Nice game. Funny sounds, cool details, like the character blinking, the train shaking and the white flag.

I feel like you need an effective way to dodge or defend from enemy attacks, because currently the most effective strategy seems to be just running at them and spamming the sword as fast as possible.

Thanks for playing.
Bopping them on the head is a great idea
I’m hoping to make at least one post LD update... I’ll definitely add this in :D

Cheers for having a play on it.
It does get incredibly hard. I left the enemies attack to increase exponentially. That needed fixing.
If I had set the ray cast to only detect what was in front of the player, that would have allowed a more stealthy approach to game play!

What I really like about your games is that you are always able to give it a little something, that gives it a unique feel. Now I am really curious with what "instrument" were all the sounds created :) Really cute game you made mate. Good Job!

@jin9310 Haha, cheers buddy. Most of the sounds were made in Rytmik. Jumping was my son going 'huh', and the enemy death was my daughter! The armour was a metal gong (edited a little)

I like your game a lot! The 'juice' is there and the gameplay is very simple and intuitive. The sound effects are nice too, although.. The sound the hero makes sounds a bit weird to me. Like there is a kid inside that armour hehe
My highscore was 351 at the first round. I think that is pretty high (-:

The graphics are spot on, as you may know I have a special place in my heart for these kind of 8-bit styled graphics.

The theme was very much present in this game. Maybe.. a liiitle too much present. The game was fun, but it felt a bit 'too repetitive'. The enimies getting harder and harder is a nice touch to add some chellange

Edit: reading the comments I understand where the sounds come from, that is so cool!

@wouter52 Thanks for the feedback :)
Haha... yeah, there kind of is a kid in the armour! I always try to get the kids to do some of the sound effects.
I had originally planned to have randomly generated levels. But when I had just 2 hours left and still not worked that out I had to compromise!
Thanks for playing :D

Thanks for the warning :) the AI moving always towards a player is a little bit tricky, as it prevents any planing really. in regard to beating the level. Also some additional UI regarding the stats would be cool. Also fullscreen have some problems, but its propably just unity...
Otherwise solid entry :)

Thanks for the warning! i noticed you can walk and push enemies, but i think the AI is well done! As you said, with more weapons and variety this can be a better game

I found the idea fantastic, the characters are very charismatic, when it dies it is still possible to damage the enemy, and the huge amount of energy that is available makes it difficult for you to die, the peace flag was great!, I will follow you on itch to later know your other games, congratulations again, a big hug.

What a gorgeous game. I love the loop idea and your interpretation of the theme, and I like the simple gameplay and how smooth the controls are. The audio is really cute and made me laugh. The graphics are so adorable, I would die for the little main character. :D Overall a solid entry, and I hope you develop this further and end up adding all the extra features you had in mind. I love it! :)

Very nice pixel art, I oved the sound effects and the screen shake when you hit or get hit too. Gameplay wise I found it a bit lacking, as it's impossible to dodge while hitting them, so you end up just going forward and mashing attack.

Is it not possible to rate you on audio ? You say you made those sound effects yourself

Got myself to carriage 10, I'm pretty bad at it :D Thought the art style was great and enjoyed the concept - def a unique approach here. Like your lil sound effects too. Great stuff.

Very neat pixels, the atmosphere of the train is great, and maybe the enemies could be more powerful or some long-range shooting enemies could be added, they almost can't hit me now when I stand on the boxes. Besides that, the appearing probability of restore items is a little bit too high, I can almost play for a long time by pressing forward and keeping attacking/;

The game has a nice look! The movements are very smooth.
The little white flag waving in the end was so cute :)
What was your pre-plan ? I-m curious :p

Really fun! Some music would be nice tho. You said the game is unbalanced, but I don't think one hit late game s![19loop.PNG](///raw/520/43/z/39b05.png)hould take more than 50% of your health bar.
