Proto by DanielRMorgan

[raw]
made by DanielRMorgan for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

This game was made for the Ludum Dare 46 event and is my first entry into any Ludum Dare. I enjoyed making the game and think the the event was a blast.

In Proto, you play as proto the courier of the last plant on post-apocalyptic Earth. Proto's mission is to reach his spaceship but mother Earth does everything in her power to stop him.

Proto is an endless climber, meaning there really is no spaceship to reach.

I hope you enjoy my Entry.Capture.PNGCapture1.PNG

Ooops. I didn't realize I could only post for either compo or jam. I thought I could post what I have for Compo and add polish for Jam. Oh Well.

Nice work! I got about far enough to reach the red platforms.

I thought your opening cinematic was well done and helped set the mood!

I know there's no win condition yet, but is there a lose condition? I noticed the meteors just knocked me to the side, sending me falling.

The jump physics feel good and just about right for a game like this. What gave me a really hard time was bumping into the bottom of each platform - I ended up trying to progress instead by like...

Jumping from platform 1 to 3 instead of 1 to 2.

One thing to note - if you hold jump, Proto will jump again as soon as they touch the ground. Probably another tap of the jump button should be necessary instead?

That was harder than it looked. I stood at the bottom for like 5-10 secs before realized I had gained control lol. But over all Great job!

Thanks for the feedback, I agree the jumping is certainly not as polished as I would like it - and you're right when you say that proto shouldn't jump multiple times when holding the space! I will work on it!

Nice work. I found it quite difficult, so I wasn't able to get that far.
The jumping is okay, but I felt like the hitboxes on the platforms were a bit off. I fell off the edges quite often.
Also the asteroid felt a little unfair at times, since it can just come out of nowhere and push you back to the bottom.

One minor point: The text is quite small in the cinematic, and hard to read.

Seems bugged for me. There are three platforms slowly descending downwards through the ground, when I am fast and I jump on the top one, I can (barely) see a fourth one, but it is too high to reach. After the three platforms left the screen, I was stuck at the ground.

I was writing this comment, but switched back to the game just to see a few platforms going up into the sky, but I was not fast enough to get on one of them. Finally, the lava got me.

Happened in both Chrome and Firefox, so probably not a browser issue.

Hmmm... Interesting problem I'll have to check it out.

I like the postapocalyptic vision you are portraying the Game. Nice little endless Jumper.

Nice work for your first participation! As others have said, there are some minor bugs here and there but it's still a good first LD game :) I also like the fact that you have added a cinematic intro!

I love the opening cutscene, though moving the character is a bit wonky and difficult.

Good first time entry. The platforming felt off to me, was a bit floaty and unforgiving. Felt like the platforms graphics were bigger than the hitboxes leading me to fall a lot. Love how have a cut scene at the start though.

Very cool game. I liked it a lot. It is not balanced at all. I didn't manage to make the third jump (I might just be bad at parkour .-.)

Nice game. It reminded me of old school Metroid. Good use of particle effects. Some of the jumps were pretty tough.

I enjoyed it, it looked nice. Pity there is no sounds or music, it's otherwise a complete experience. I did my best but in the end an asteroid knocked me all the way back down to the lava, and I died. Good job!

This is a okay little compo game. I had fun trying the game, but I was able to get very far. The game really needs some music and/or sound effects.

Hi!! Good job with your first gamejam entry!! For the next time I advice you to add some background loop music and to play the game in order to do a level design that goes from easy to difficult level. In this case I didn't go to far since the platforms blocked my jumping.
However, I would like to congratulate for your first entry :)

Thanks for the feedback, I think next time I need to take into account that I play the game a billion times while testing and therefore likely made the game more difficult to fit what I thought was balanced - thanks for commenting!

Great work for a first Ludum Dare! Unfortunately the platforming is too floaty in the air and slippery on the ground, and the platforms and characters are too big. I kept bumping into the wrong platform and falling all the way back down. The conservation of inertia doesn't help matters; when I got hit by an asteroid I would maintain my inertia and be unable to correct in time to land on one of the platforms below, which felt frustrating.

Good job! The narrative opening was really well made and the platforming was alright  I look forward to seeing your entries in future jams!
