"Fire Camp" is a jam game produced for Ludum Dare 46, with the theme being "Keep it alive".

In our game, you play a lumberjack lost in a fairy forest. Your only way to survive is to keep your camp fire alive. But be aware! Ghosts won't let you alone and will try to extinguish it. Pick up logs, find axes to cut trees and add combustible inside your camp fire. Don't forget to push ghosts away by crossing them.

paragraphe.png

When you launch the game, you appear in front of your camp fire. You have to pick up logs or use axes, which can be found in different places, to chop trees. Throw logs in your fire before it gets extinguished. You have a limited amount of combustible you can carry and logs obtained by cutting down a tree that make you go over your maximum capacity will be lost, so don't forget to commute to your camp fire. There are ghosts trying to extinguish the fire. Walk across them to make them disappear. Your goal is to survive as long as possible. After a game you earn points (money) than you can spend to improve your skills.

How to play

controls_v2.jpg

  • Use Arrows / WASD / Joystick to move
  • Press E or Button A to interact (pick up logs / axe, chop trees, add combustibles to camp fire)
  • Cross ghosts to kill them
  • Camp fire loses combustible at regular time (noticed by grey smoke)
  • If ghost reach the camp fire, it loses combustible

Hints

To prevent walkers to make a fire, ghosts made them run away and dispersed axes all around the forest. However, they lost a map with some marks (that we found miraculously). It could be usefull if you go there. Don't forget to open your eyes because axes can be hidden.

The graphics are outstanding and the progression system is pretty cool !
But it's hard to understand if we should run into the ghosts or not. I also have a message "fire low on combustible" all the time

Nice looking game with a lot of replayability  However, the movements and player actions feels too rigid in a game when you're running everywhere

It looks very good!
And the progression system is a nice thing for replayability (I only did 3 or 4 runs though)
The fact that it was divided in tiles did not bothered me at all, I actually found it original and I like it.
It is a bit hard to know what is the "health"/state of the fire, the warning message helps but you can keep this message for a long time.
There are a lot of campfire games made, we did one too x)

I like the concept of tile based movement, quite unique. The graphics are great too.

Amazing graphics and upgrade tree but gameworld as tiles may not be the best choice for character movement

It's a very complete game for just a jam, awesome work! Loved the low poly graphics, well done

Wow, it's a good prototype for a commercial game. The controls were a little bit tricky at the beginning but when I get used to them the game was easiest.
Good job!

Loved the clean look of the ui elements! In the same vein also greatly appreciated the iconographic explanation of the game :D (MC + Ghost = Ghost is kill, Ghost + Fire = Fire is kill)

I like how the need to explore is given with enough time while at the same time always trying to look out for ghosts near the camp, makes the map stay fresh for a long time, as you simply don't want to stray away too much. That balance was on point!

Sadly, sometimes the ghost did not behave appropriately (aka despawn after you walk through them), which was a bit frustrating at times.

I made it through the Tech-Tree until I had 1 of any kind of upgrade. Again, great, cleaned up UI! Would have appreciated a bit more variation though, maybe something more than a numbers-upgrade, but then again, I understand how limited the time was.

Overall was a great experience! I can mirror the sentiments of @idf-productions and @overmolo - it seems like a viable, complete, almost ready for the world game!

Man, wish. I could try it, but I am on Mac. Could you please build a version for Mac or WebGL?

@datagreed I go try WebGL (but it is not made for at the base)

Hello @datagreed, we have published the Mac version. Tell us if you have any problem with the application.

Furthermore, we don't upload a WebGL version now to avoid bad performance (the game contains many post-process effects).

Awesome graphics and amazingly polished gameplay. It was a pleasure to play it. I don't if it's me but for some reason there was no sound on the Windows version. Game was fun but it got monotonic pretty quickly. I really like the progression system but it was a bit disappointing that you need to do the same thing every time. The atmosphere is great though.

Very impressive, great job guys!

Very good game for prototype! Dont drop it!

Your idea about moving like in board game is interesting way, I like it! You can move forward and add some cards (like MTG, Hearthstone) for create some axe for example.

Tech tree not for show, its work for player and helpful on start. Mostly when you get axe on start (can i make one in game?)

Oh, and Ghosts is <3 cute)) blowing with so nice animation)

The mood and audio was really well done! At first it felt weird to run through ghosts to make them disappear but once you get the hang of it, it works :)

Most of the time i found myself really far from the camp when the fire died because i didn't know the rate of decay. Maybe some kind of UI would help to understand the mechanics better. I did like the grid based movement though, i think that could work nicely for this type of game.

Hi, huge graphic work here! The mood is perfect and the level design seems good too! Congrats for this!

However it feels a bit weird, as someone said above, to have such controls in a game of exploration. Maybe you knew how to deal with such a mechanic better than with a free roam mechanic.

I also felt confused when I chopped down trees and didn't get any log as a result of this action? Is it a bug or did I miss anything?

Last thing I wanted to say, just like @colinbellino, I lost a lot of times when I was going deep in the forest, I couldn't know the dicrease rate, nor if there was some ghosts around. That situation is kinda critical because you need to get some combustible for your fire at all price but can't leave the camp...

Thank you for this nice submission and for bringing us into your beautiful univers. I hope my comment helps you in a way:). Cheers

I admit I felt a little annoyed by tiles and by the need to press E to pick up what's on the floor.
Graphics are pretty nice for a game jam game. It is cool you find a way to stretch its length with that skill tree. It makes feel we may progress, see how far goes the map, and discover more of your universe.

@colinbellino @bionikmonster @damdoshi

About the movement (grid-based), we decided to try this system and see what people think about it. It is interesting that some people like it and other don't. This system need some improvements to be a bit more enjoyable.

About the fire, we decided to not give an user interface feedback but it was a bad idea. We have feedbacks on the fire (particles and light) but they are not enough.

Furthermore, when you chop a tree, the number of log increase (according to the limit). This number is displayed on the bottom of the screen.

Thanks for playing and given us good feedbacks.

Well, got some ghosts trying to extinquish my campfire!

The game is quite performance-hungry, unfortunately, at least on my Mac :/ maybe there's something we can do about that, like turning off shadows or lightning in general to make it a bit more accessible?

Cool to see that you have progress after each level, which gets you better chances for survival over time :)

Also, the axe from the start did not seem as necessary, since you always have one next to your fire. Or, perhaps I did not survive enough to see my ax break?

Nonetheless, nice entry!

Damn, I almost forgot to play your game :/
Which would be a shame, because I think it's really great! :)
I like the idea and how the gameplay felt, the graphics, music and therefood mood is really really REALLY great!
The camera worked nice, I think you chose a perfect angle/distance, the menu feels really nice and the sounds are nice as well.
I really liked that you've put upgrades to buy each time with the money you#ve earned before, gave it a nice try and error touch :)
At first I wasn't too fond of the grid based controls (I didn't like that the logs took a full box and actually blocked my path hahaha), but in the end I thought it was a good choice, maybe indicate it more with a tutorial or make the grid more visible? Although I think it would still be fun if you changed the controls :)
What I think is missing is an indicator of the HP of the flames, the warning is nice, but you know I need something to estimate it better.
Also a minimap indicating how far away the ghosts are would have been nice for the same reason, which is organising what to do next :)
The ghosts were cute and scary at the same time, haha, A couple of times I experienced a bug that the ghost doesn#t vanish but stops and stays on the spot forever, also sometimes the ghosts din't vanish at the first time I pass them (nthing gamebreaking though, just a bit weird)
I think I would make the character faster than the ghosts OR make it possible to pause the game and check the situation out with the grids and all :) (like if I still have time to catch him before he reaches the fire if I do a cetain action or not :))

All in all, a great and pretty entry for a jam! I think it would be a fun complete game if you descide to conitnue working on it :) Like maybe add levels? But still keep the try and error mechanic, I like that!
I would probably make it so the player can move onto the next level afer 2-3 upgrades and add bonuses and collectibles for each player that sticks around longer :) Well, you have to try!

Congrats to the team!

Thanks to everyone who played and comments. We took all of your advices in consideration.
We have decided to do a commercial version of the game. We are re-starting the development from zero. Current features will stay in the game but many improvements are needed (ex: better UI for the fire). Furthermore, new features will be added like the possibility to play with a friend in a local coop.

Stay tune on our [Twitter](https://twitter.com/MuchoBestoSt) and [Itch.IO](https://muchobestostudio.itch.io/) pages.
