Timmy & Rock by KekkoDude

made by KekkoDude for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Welcome to Timmy & Rock's

This is a simple 2D platformer where you try to keep Rock alive by fending off waves of critters that want to ruin the balance of the universe! Timmy is just a small town boy who found a cool rock standing around one day strolling through the fields. Little did he know this was no ordinary rock, no, this was Rock.

Controlls

  • Hoold down left-mouse button to charge your attacks
  • A & D for left/right movement
  • Spcae
  • Shift to sprint

Ludum dare 46!

So this was my 2'nd Ludum Dare entery, 2 in a row, not bad, getting better at this now haha! my time managment skills still needs some work, i got hung up on way to many techincal details during this jam so i did not realise how un-intuitive the game was untill the end, its the usual deal, when you make the controlls and playtest the game for 48 hours you forget that new players wont have your knowledge entering the game by default, it has to be conveyed!

also i havent made a platformer in ages so there where alot of concepts i had to revisit and brush dust off haha, i spent alot onger than i thougt i would doing Basic groundwork...

But in the bigger picture im quite pleased with this game, i was making it with the mindset of beeing flexible in the manner of how fast i could add new items, monsters, power-ups etc... and looking at my code i think i did so pretty well.

I wanted to do more work on audio and music, but i did not prioritize this, and when i finaly got around to it i realised i was not able to make the music play the way i desired it to, and my audio controller got so buggy with me desperately shoving new code at it, ripping some out tweaking and messing with it right before the end.

so i ended up playing one soundtrack on a loop for the first part of the game when you are introduced to rock, and the other soundtrack during the main loop

What i did not get to

i wanted to add some power-ups and some clearer progression along with some better in-game instructions, there's also alot of graphical work that could be done haha but.. time management!

@nathan123 Yeah there's a lot of virus warnings going around during Ludum Dare, but have faith in the community! i downloaded a win32 trojan something yesterday from a LD game haha...

Glad you enjoyed it, i'm working on a little patch to make it a bit more fleshed out right now, but my schedule has been busy this week so it has taken some time.

Nice sound effects :)

Of course also had that annoying warning, but it's clean. Enough downloads and it should be gone.
What I find strange is the shots, that are affected by gravity. You have to jump above the enemies to hit them properly. I survived for a bit before I died.

A health or progress indicator would help. When I wake up, did I lose or win? :)

@endurion the shots are gravity based because the damage is calculated from momentum haha, if you hold down the mouse button you charge up your shots, at full charge you can one hit all the enemies(unless you find that perfect angle wich causes you to do like 9.99 damage wich i have solved) i'm releasing a patch tomorrow with some clearer UI elements as well as some new monsters, and hopefully some power-ups, it has been hard finding time to work on the game after Ludum Dare so things have been moving kinda slow.

When you wake up, you lost, ~~there's no win condition~~ haha sorry, just an endless wave defender at this point, i had to slap on some form of ending right at the end to complete the cycle, there is also a bug where if you want to restart, the soundtrack plays on top the previous one and the main room was ticked off as beeing persistent in the release build so it just skips it and moves to the end screen because it saves the state of Rock as being dead, or Timmy for that matter

I liked the dialogue, but that's it. Barely had any actual gameplay. Restarting the game was broken and nothing really seemed to make sense. There was no feedback on the health of the rock or even if I had hit the enemies. Music and sounds started started overlapping and the game was overall just a mess.

Hi !
Really enjoyable game, even if you cannot pass through the second wave of enemies. The rock should obtain small amount of energy over time to avoid being stuck without any ressource ! And you forgot to mention how to recover energy and ammos in your description I think :p

The enemies looked great. The walk animations were very smooth. The gameplay was a little tough to figure out at first, then once I did the game was too easy and I got bored pretty quickly. Still, a good Compo entry.

Played for a while but there was no indication of how long you had to protect the rock or the rock's health. Other than that everything seemed serviceable. You've got the base of a game down, and that is often times the hardest part. The graphics and walk cycles are also solid.

@phlip45 & Anon, if Anon ever comes back to see. Rocks health is represented by how damaged he is, you see him cracking up slowly as he takes damage, no? there is no timer on how long you are supposed to keep him safe, it's just an endless wave as of now, i wanted to make a clearer progression, but did not have time because of all the mechanics wich took up most of my time.

@poulpint i have a feeling you played my latest release, not the LD release, the LD release is a lot simpler in manner of HUD and what not, but hey! glad you liked it! the controls for the latest version is better described in the description on itch. i dont know if you figured it out, but you fill up your yellow bar from collecting the monster drops, you can then proceed to exchange it for other consumables, like restoring Rocks health, you own health or your energy

@prepparedheathen Haha yeah, once you get the hang of it, it's pretty straight forward, i added a new enemy in the latest release wich makes you have to prioritize what you go after, so it has a *bit* more depth to it.

i kinda wanted all the instructions to be passed along by Rock through commentary and dialogue but i got a bit ambitious on that front so a lot did not make it into the release as i had to swap priorities at a point to get the game done haha

Nice idea!

The game clearly has potential, but lacks a bit of feedback and diversity. You probably should also hide the cursor and make the crosshair displayed in front of enemies :)

Some more indication of the rock's health would have been nice too. But I agree with @philip45, you have the base down :)
Congrats!

"LIKE... COOOOOOL POWERS" haha hilarious. The game has solid core mechanics and the voice acting really kept me engaged for a while, would have been fun to add in some more of this later in the game .

I was hoping there was more to the game so I tried walking to the right and probably fell down the game world since the character disappeared when I tried going left again

Well done on coming back for LD once more, hope to see you in future jams.

Congrats on completing your 2nd LD! Time management is definitely one of the hardest things to do during these challenges, but as you do more jams you'll see big improvement. Mine could certainly use some work :p. I enjoyed the writing and the concept was interesting. I was really hoping to find out what those "cool powers" were! I had a good time huckin' rocks at those leech-looking things, though. I think I fell into the pattern of either charging fully and shooting straight, or rapid firing small tosses while standing next to the monsters. I'd love to see some sort of incentive to throw the rocks in nice arcs!

Nice game. I found it a bit hard though. Reducing the charging time might be helpful, but good job.

What a strange dream! I would have liked a UI or something to display health, but other than that I had a blast! Good job!

Good job! I liked the music a lot :D

The music at the beginning was sort of repetitive, although the music during the actual game was the right lvel of backgroundness. Additionally, I couldn't figure out out to restore health.

Hehe, good approach to the game! Liked voice acting and lose screen ;) But the game is a bit monotonous, maybe need some variativity, but still nice try!
