What the Hell! by Mikado

[raw]
made by Mikado for Ludum Dare 45 (JAM)

What the Hell! is a small top-down game, where an unknown character with a mysterious past and a mushroom haircut wakes up in hell with a gun with him and has to defeat the enemies in the underworld to go back to Earth. Enemies have a chance to drop a key. To proceed with rooms you will need at least 1 key.

I know it's very short as a game, but unfortunately i didn't have all the time to work on it because of school.

I'm also sorry for any bugs that could occur, it's my first game jam.

Beware! If you're playing the downloaded version, do not run the game on fullscreen, many bugs will happen if you do so, and in the WebGL version the portal doesn't work. I currently don't know why for both things.

Anyways, Enjoy! what the hell icon.png

hmm. few bugs, sometimes enemies would just not drop any keys before a door (RNG I reckon? should have at least 1 guaranteed drop). And sometimes it seemed like my shots wouldn't come out, like my own hitbox was blocking the gun or something so I had to move away to be able to kill stuff. Solid enough concept though, and a decent first entry.

Some enemies' health bar is so big, they looks not good. And I had some bug that @iak saw.

Hi, thanks for playing my game. I just released a new version, now the bugs should be fixed (including keys not spawning, hitbox doing weird stuff, audio clips not reproducing, etc.)

The controls are real smooth! I like it! The sound effects can get a bit repetitive but otherwise, overall it's a good game! Tank you and hope to see you in the next jam! :D

@dudum-lare Thank you for your review! Yeah, perhaps i will make a post-jam version, with improved sounds and effects, and some polishing. The game wasn't perfect at it release, so...

@neowhoru yes, that was actually a feature  as i thought the game was too difficult. I forgot to mention that.

Well, there's some nice, simple fun. I didn't think it was too difficult at all. A nice variety of enemies, that worked well together.

Good stuff :8ball:

Is that Yoda's death sound? haha. Shooting the gun is pretty fun and the background is cool. Varied sound effects for firing would be a nice addition, along with mini versions of the hp potion dropped randomly from some enemies (but of course with say +5 hp or something instead of infinite). I got an error while trying to go through the portal at the end while fighting the boss, otherwise worked good. The spinning keys are cool too.

@oddballdave :ok_hand: Thanks!

@exilegl Oh yes you're right! Looks like i didn't think about the "enemies dropping potions" aspect. Yeah, unfortunately i know about the portal issue, it does that only on the WebGL version, i don't know why. And yes, i put Yoda's death sound in the game

Simple yet nice game! Enemies would sometimes float over the platforms though, but that's fine given the time constraint. Otherwise neat game!

Nice work! Love the background art and he concept. Would have liked to hear some music but the sfx add a cool ambience.

The boss pushed me out of bounds and then the game crashed. The core game is fun. Could use some improvement but good work overall!

It was challenging and had some fun moments! The little flame enemies were definitely the most dangerous ones in the game, since they move so fast that if you try to run, they keep colliding with you and can almost insta-kill you.
