I think you could have done away with the hearts and used the fireplace as the sole thing you need to protect (especially as the trees were gunning for that and not you personally). Also, perhaps not making the fire damage the player would've been a bit more user-friendly too. I often just lost a bit of health moving around and it felt like an inconvenience to have the thing I'm nurturing harm me.\n\nI really liked the idea of the trees dropping the fuel for the fire and being able to use them to fuel the fire or deal extra damage, which adds a thin layer of strategy. \n\nWhile the aniamtion is minimal, the artowrk itself is appealing. I felt that taking damage was something that could be worked on or reworked, the only obvious indicator that you have taken damage is the audio queue which I sometimes overlook due to the hectic nature of the game.
