Orcs v. Trolls (HTML5) by David Greene

[raw]
made by David Greene for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

Overview:

You are the leader of an Orc tribe, and the evil Trolls have been encroaching for far too long. Keep your Hut alive while burning the Troll Hut to the ground. Fight each of the ten Troll villages to bring peace to your region and ensure prosperity for your Orc tribe for generations to come!

Directions:

  • Spells: Cost 10 mana, use to gain the upper hand
  • Mana: (max: 100) Persists from level to level, regenerates slowly
  • Minions: Random chance to spawn on each side of the map. Simple combat AI: chase closest target and attack!
  • Big Minions: Sometimes, a Big Minion spawns, these have double size, attack and health
  • Levels: Levels start easy, but progress in difficulty. Can you win 100% of your territory back?
  • Power Ups: After beating a level, you have the choice between continuing with no changes or selecting one of three power-ups. Some power-ups come with a negative side effect while others are simply positive. Pick your strategy for defeating your enemy!

Post-submission to-do list:

  • Directions/tutorial/main page - the game is relatively self-explanatory since it's mostly AI driven, but the user needs time to "figure it out". Sometimes that's fun, but most of the time it is not.
  • Create multiple layouts for the levels
  • Put up some sort of border graphic and generally make it prettier - landscape, etc
  • Create a "loadout" of spells. Start the game, choose your fav 3 spells, etc
  • More "types" of minions, perhaps earning them as the game progresses

Surprisingly fun! I can see this game being great if you keep working at it. Good luck!

I love the choices between the levels, such a rouge-lite feel. Nice game overall. The mana generation is kind of bugged though... Good work.
Also, if you used Unity 2020.1 and failed to build for HTML5 without development build, you can turn off the compression in publishing settings.

Fun game! Also really enjoyed the choices between missions which made for different playthroughs each time.

@arqcenick - the mana generation is intentionally slow. The idea is that you should have to think about when you use your spells. One strategy that I've employed is to use the spells to "push" to the end... sort of a tempo play that lets you get ahead and stay ahead just long enough. It's basically the only way I've found to reliably beat level 10 as the AI increases start to overpower you around level 7ish.

It was fun but i found it a bit to easy (i only got my hut touched at the start) and visualy it could work like it is now i just didnt like the color that much.

The choices were a good idea. I really liked how everything was a little ball.

The strategy that seemed to work really well was picking meditation and spamming orcs near the troll hut. Of course, if I didn't get that power up one of the times it would have messed me up. That made for a fairly good risk vs reward system.

A fun game but a bit too random which holds it back a lot, it seems very scissors paper rock where certain units can either do nothing to others or 1 hit them, it feel frustrating to get 1-2 big minions then they instantly get 1 shot by certain types of enemies. It also seems like the end of level upgrade RNG is the main decider if you will win or not, with faster spawns and more max minions making it far easier to win.

I never managed to make it past level six, but I enjoyed playing through a few runs, varying my strategy of which power ups to get. I feel that this game would be improved if it did more to involve the player (or at least add a fast forward button to minimize the bits where the player has little influence) - if I ran out of mana, it regenerated so slowly that it seemed like I could no longer really participate in the battle and was just kinda hoping things would go okay. Similarly, for the power-ups, there was a lot of talk of specific technical things (e.g. max # of minions, attack damage, max health, chance of big minion), but, far as I could see, no way for the player to quantify these things to make a meaningful decision or understand what was weak in their setup - showing a lot more to the player would enhance the experience, especially since I think that the base mechanics here are solid. The music and sound-effects were great - they definitely made watching the battles way more fun.

Did you make the music or was it pre made?
