Bomber Escort (or boomer escort) by thatOtherNerd
You are a fighter plane who's goal is to protect the bomber (or boomer) as an enemy plane tries to attack the bomber(or boomer) I hope you enjoy!
Funny story, I ran into a an issue during development where the enemy plane just wanted to run away, and it just kept on doing it, forcing me to use a different turning method.
Controls: WS/Up Arrow and Down Arrow to accelerate and decelerate. AD/Left Arrow and Right Arrow to turn. Use the space bar to shoot.
Also, this is my first Ludum Dare (actually my first game jam), so let me know if I posted the wrong file for source code.

Solid mechanics. As frustrating as the slow turns are, they definitely make things more deliberate and thought out.
I decided to make a lot of it slower because if it was all faster it would be too easy to approach the enemy and aim at it, but with it slower you have to think about what happens if the enemy gets past you.
Overall, it was a fun game that had all the necessary features (menu, win condition, lose condition, score, etc). Great first gamejam game!
The rhythm of the game feels kind of slow for what I would expect from the art, but I got some fun destroying the other planes. Keep on it!
I think the collision boxes seemed a bit big, and it could have done with some feedback to let me know a bullet has connected. Perhaps some kind of energy bar for the enemies.
Overall, it's a nice game, well done!
Congratulations for your entry and keep working! Don't stop here!
I initially thought it felt as bit sluggish, but I think I agree that making turning faster might change the game too much.
There could be some more polish, but 48 hours isn't a lot, so well done!
Ok I may have run into issues but on Chrome:
- I couldn't shoot all the time and when I had the sound on, I would hear the shooting sound but no bullets. You may want to look into Unity's collision system and do a few experiments for fun and education. It can seem daunting at first but if you set up different collision types and make projectiles that are physical, use raycast, etc, you'll learn a lot so it won't be so daunting.
- I played until my score was 3000 and I never saw any enemies. I stopped playing at this point. Did you revision the build? Chrome problem?
I really like the relative controls. It means you'd have to plan your moves ahead of time. What did you think of the tone of your music? Do you think that maybe in lieu of music, some propellers and gun fire maybe could have helped the mood more? Sorry I had so much trouble with your game. I really would like to play Part II in the next jam. That would be awesome if it fit the theme!
