LavaLampSpaceMission by Fabian G

[raw]
made by Fabian G for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Can you reach the magic spot in this Lava Lamp Space without running out of juice?!

Traversing the environment with your Lava Lamp Shuttle will deplete your juice reserves, the collision with flying rocks is fatal too!!!

However if you hook them, your reserves will slowly regenerate. They refill at once when getting pulled to an orb!!!

Ty for playing!

Controls:

R - restart

Left/Right - docked: turn ship if / flying: shoot anchor

Space - docked: take off / flying: reset anchor / stranded: restart at last orb

I always like the moment of taking random objects and making it into a game. The controls are a bit dodgy - maybe rotate the camera with the player? Overall it is a challenging puzzle!

I seem to run out of fuel when trying to get from the 3rd to 4th checkpoint. How do I refuel?

@mrfluffysheep Hi, ty for trying out the game.
Regarding refuel: as long you are hooked to an asteroid, you wont lose fuel but instead slowly regain some :-)

Oh! Okay that makes sense. I kept hooking onto an asteroid and then crashing which depleted my fuel so I thought that the asteroid depleted my health! Really cool idea!

I think this is a really cool idea but needs some love. I think the game is a bit hard right off the bat. Finding a way to gradually introduce challenge would have been nice. I also think that without music the experience just feels a bit lacking.

I liked the mechanic here a lot and it was fun to play as it is - though I think there's a lot of things that might be improved. Particularly, I think it would be nice if either the ship moved much faster (to make a game of more skill) or if there was some more long range visibility or a map (to allow more puzzling) - and I think this could expand nicely into either direction. I also wonder if there could be more variety - maybe, for instance, there could be obstacles that would dissolve if hit by a hook (or could only be hooked once); I'm sure there are other ideas, but more variety would improve the game. As it stands, it's a good short experience, and the graphics seem fairly polished and fun.

Also: I didn't like the keyboard layout for restarting - sometimes I would fly off towards a thingy by accident, and would have wished to restart from the last orb immediately - but this not an option. Also, since "R" is so common for "restart the last level", I pressed it twice wanting to go to the last orb, but instead going to the start, which was sad (especially since I did it both times at what turned out to be the second to last orb!)

I really like the mechanic! I do feel like it would be more fun if the ship either moved faster, could go longer without having to refuel, or if refueling took less time. As it is, it takes a while to figure out how exactly everything works.

Nice idea!

I like the slow travel to an extend, it is sometimes hard to figure out where to go, and it is long when you missed your jumping window and have to wait to do a complete rotation around the asteroid.
Graphics are fine, I would have loved some audio to put me more in the mood!

Overall, a strong entry with a nice idea, congrats :)

Great idea! I like the spaceship going around little by little. It is a little bit hard to realize where to go sometimes, but good job :)

The controls were a bit tricky at first. I kept getting confused on how the same keys would control different things depending on if I was anchored or not. After figuring out the control it was really fun to navigate around via hook. My only other complaint is that having to regen fuel while anchored to an asteroid slows down gameplay a bit too much for my liking

Really good start, I feel like this could get cool if there was some crazy fast-paced action with the hook gameplay.

I found it very tricky and hard to play and to be honest it frustrated me in the beginning, but after I got it, I think it was a cool concept. If it had sound it would add a lot for a good atmosphere.

Good job! I like the mechanic but I feel like it could have moved a lot faster. This is a very good result after just 48 hours, and it would be cool to see what you could make out of it given more time
