LineLoop by Squareworx Studio

[raw]
made by Squareworx Studio for Ludum Dare 47 (JAM)

This is my very first LD Jam, and boy oh boy can I admit it was a blast! 'NO REGRETS'

I would like to present my game as LineLoop, the game where you are stuck in a endless loop between shifting movement axis. You will need to survive the endless streams of enemies, as well as my horrible sound effects (clearly my strengths are not in that department) you have a special lazer beam that can penetrate multiple enemies and 1-shot them, keep this as a last resort (in case your main gun overheats)

My main reason for doing this Ludum Dare was to show myself that being "overly strict" in my coding habits, shouldn't get me stuck in an endless loop of restarting the same project over and over. Seriously this broke me, but I just couldn't help myself. However I feel that I have learned a lot about myself, and perhaps all of you reading this can teach me even more by being brutally honest in your reviews.

also feel free to have a look at my source code, see the amazing web of nonsense I made while I was fighting the urge to have everything perfect and organised

Don't let anyone criticize your graphics (although I doubt they will anyways). This simplistic look feels like the right choice for this type of game. The sound effects are well chosen, the BGM is a good fit.

The controls took a little getting use to. Initially I was going to suggest disable left/right when going vertically and up/down when going horizontally (as it felt weird). However I very quickly got use to using left/right regardless of direction and things went smoothly after that. Very well done!

I agree with bradyg, the graphics are amazing! I would like to point out that when you hit a yellow dot while moving, it sends you in a random direction on that axis which feels a little strange. Another thing that I would have loved is some sort of indicator of where the next dot is. Other than those two things, the game feels very polished and fun to play!

I really like the dynamic of your game. The gameplay with the camera motion is very fluid

I really like what you did ! Your movement mechanic is awesome, I really liked your game !

I would consider adding lives or an indicator to point enemy out of the screen, just to be able to plan a little bit what you will do. Amazing job !

Neatly compacted game, sound and visual works well, and the game play fun and a bit addictive. Would typically only make it to a score of 11, and my high-score 16, would maybe want the laser to be wider since it has a long cd and missing with it often feels bad, though a lot of iteration could come into play to expand on the game as well. A nice game, good job!

Juicy and quite pretty! I think the pixelation filter should maybe be even stronger; lean in to the style! The camera movement is a little high, but it makes things interesting by forcing you to aim where you want to move or you'll die. I would lean into that a little more; maybe make the camera view a bit smaller, or maybe add a timer that resets when you grab the ball so you have to grab it quickly (thus forcing you to make risky decisions and choose whether it's better to shoot or look where you move). The tutorial does feel a tiny bit rushed, and could use some polish, but this is Ludum Dare, so it's a small detail. Overall, I would give this 4.5 stars. Great job!

PS: Opt out of humor since your game isn't meant to be comedic. It'll drag down your overall score!

Pretty fun but I died a few times due to enemies seemingly spawning inside me which was frustrating (I am pretty tired though so perhaps i just didn't notice them spawning in)

This is the most fun I have had with this round of Ludem Dare games! I love the concept and the mechanics, super original. At first I was confused by the controls but once I started it was easy to grasp. Great work :)

This feels very polished. The simplistic art style is very nice to look at and the camera feels really good. It's really easy to understand and enjoy the moment you start playing it. Really well done!

The minimalist art style is really good in this. The shooting gameplay feels really nice partly because of how clean and smooth it is. Got a bit confused by the single-axis movement at first, but its a nice twist on the formula and always keeps you on your toes. Good job!

I love this game, easy, minimalistic, and geniously designed. The camera was a bit weird at the begining, but as I got used to it, it was even a advantage. If this was truly your first game jam you did amazing job. If you have a while of spare time you could check out my game, this was my first game jam too (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/reincarnation).
