made by togo sepultraut for Ludum Dare 46 (JAM)

help the little mushroom people keep the fire alive! thumb.gif code by Togo (who cuestionably decided to try out phaser3) art by Lucas (who stood by my cuestionable actions)

post jam edit starts here

Play here

looking at the comments about the lack of a victory condition, we decided to write some more detail here.

How to play

managing your units

click a unit to select it.
click anywhere on the floor to make a selected unit walk to that spot.
the two kinds of unit have different actions when clicking other things in the screen.

Collector

the collector gathers wood and keeps the fire alive tut01.PNG click a mushroom tree to chop it down and get wood tut03.PNG collectors can hold up to three pieces of wood at a time
clicking the bonfire with a collector with at least one piece of wood will make it feed the fire.

Warrior

the warrior deals with the monsters lurking in the shadows tut02.PNG click an exposed enemy to make the warrior fight tut04.PNG hurt warriors will slowly recover back to full health
warriors will automatically fight any monster that attacks them, but dealing the first blow is very important.

Dealing with monsters

monsters lurk in the shadows, slowly creeping towards the closest unit.
they are unable to move in the bonfire's light, but will attack and kill units when at close range.

Victory and defeat

you will lose if the fire dies out or you run out of units.
you will win once all monsters have been disposed of.

The future of this game

we want to, and will try to make time for two main things. - add features that were planned but discarded - sounds - tree life cycle, for sustainability - healing warriors by consuming fire instead of over time - ability to start additional fires - fix the game's packaging. under the hood changes for peace of mind, mostly texture packing.

I like the graphics of the game, but the lack of audio is kind of off putting, but I like your concept and I think you expand this later on.

This game bugged out for me when I was trying to play it so I didn't get very far but I really love the art and the mood of the game! It looks beautiful - you should be proud! :)

A solid framework, I absolutely love the art and the general setting. I managed to chop down all the trees in the forest so I call that a win. Would love to see this grow into something more complete.

Pretty nice little game, was a little confused initially, however the info tab is a nice addition. Visuals are very clean, & only a couple of hindering bugs.

Love the aesthetics of your game ! Especially how the shadow people just hang enough at the edge so that you feel their presence. Very well made.

amazing pixelart ! I'm a youtuber, your game is very nice! I want to make a video with the best games of LDJam46. Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOdTsWE7iIk .
Can I find your game also on indiexpo website? The channel is linked with them.

The game has a nice artstyle! Does it have a winning condition? I chopped down all the mushrooms and gathered a lot of logs to keep the fire burning, but in the end nothing happened. Also the Warrior Shroomies seem to be a destroyed in a second, so fighting was not an option for me. Anyways - good Job!

The looks is amazing, but the lack of sound and win state are a bummer :/ People is right the mechanic and concept are neat, and you guys should make a complete version of this, adding sound effects and some particle effects would improve the experience, also, make the clickable collider of the little people a bit bigger, most of the time I was trying to change between characters but what happened was that my already chosen character just walked over there.

Cool game guys, keep it up :D

The game looks really good the pixel art is really beautiful. The controls could be made a bit easier it was kind of tricky to select a new unit sometimes. Interesting idea though, could become something great if expanded on. Good job!

This has a much more interesting theme to it than most of the keep the fire alive games. The lack of audio definitely takes away from the feel though and it also seems rather buggy. It does feel like there is potential in the concept though and the visuals are really good.

@aguahervida @endymion the game does have a win condition! it's a bit hard to just stumble upon it so we updated the description to reveal it. basically: manage your fire and timing so the warriors have time to heal and kill all monsters.

@torh the game is now also available on indiexpo. https://www.indiexpo.net/en/games/embershrooms

thanks everyone for the nice comments so far

Great entry! I love that the enemies are masked by the darkness, makes wandering risky and encounters surprising.

I only feel like the units are a little hard to select (I would click one but cause the previously selected unit to walk there). Besides that the mechanic is very cool and well-presented!

Nice entry! Graphics are great, the game feels very atmospheric altogether. I like the concept, though controlling the characters was rather frustrating. Often I could not select a unit because it was close to the fire, even though the arrow showed. The game seemed very difficult at first, with my units being killed off in seconds. I eventually got the hang of it and managed to chop all the wood, though I didn't manage to kill all the monsters yet. I think with more units and more autonomous behaviour (like auto attack enemies and bring back wood automatically) this would be great fun.

Cute graphics! I included it in my Ludum Dare 46 compilation video series, if you want to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/W3MIuB5jBTw
