Snake: Looped Around by kruemelkeksfan

[raw]
made by kruemelkeksfan for Ludum Dare 47 (COMPO)

I decided very spontanously to participate in this LD and since I didn't have the time and resources to make a serious game, I decided to do a little speedrun and see how fast I could get anything out.

Therefore I proudly present: a snake game with the unique twist of having to go in circles around the map. The game has single button controls, just press any button to turn right. No left turns and no shortcuts allowed, you have to circle the map completely if you missed the food by 1 tile. Sounds fun, right?

Also includes a state of the art, harmonically near perfect procedural music generator (not). Best thing the music script adds is the Mute-Button in the Main Menu, use it wisely.

Total time spent on this game was 7 hours. I estimated that I could do it in 2, but considering that my usual guesses are off by months, I am pretty satisfied with just 5 hours more.

EDIT:

Hotfix 1.1 (+2h to total time), 03.10.2020, Changelog: - Holding a key does not turn the snake repeatedly anymore - Fixed the old "Pellet-can-spawn-in-the-Center"-fix from last night - Fixed pellets not spawning next to the right or bottom borders - Fixed pellet occasionally spawning on the last tail segment - Made pellets bigger to stick out of walls for easier bug hunts - Adjusted snake color and segment scale - Turned up the overall audio volume

Hotfix 1.2 (+0.5h to total time), 03.10.2020, Changelog: - Snake speed now increases slightly with increasing score - Fixed some random music loops not playing

35 score 28 loops on Gamer after twenty minutes.

Not bad, though I was briefly confused by the block in the center and the inputs that got eaten. Finally realized you couldn't make hairpin turns, you were forced to stay in the loop. While not directly intuitive, it follows the theme pretty closely. The ONLY change I would consider is not making the button holdable. On Hacker difficulty it becomes impossible to turn accurately if you get too close to the center block, the slightest of button presses will make the snake turn twice. This is even a problem in Gamer difficulty but never caused problems in Noob difficulty

By the way, I got a bug three times where another pellet didn't spawn after one was eaten. The first time was after the very first pellet, but the other times were after several pellets. Are you sure that pellets cannot spawn in illegitimate, unreachable places? I didn't see it anywhere but the pellet is small enough to disappear in a wall block. My guess would be inside the center block, as, if it was in the outer wall, the pellet would go missing more frequently. Also check that they cannot spawn on the tail, I suppose.

@123seven3 Thank you for the detailed feedback, I guess I fixed the issues you mentioned (and some more). All the checks you mentioned were technically in place, but 2 of them were bugged and therefore useless. Mainly I did check whether the pellet spawned under the center block by verifying that the pellet position was unequal to (0|0|0), without considering that all pellets are at y = 1.

First new run in Hacker I got 22 score 19 loop. Of course, the next run I got 0 score 1 loop so it all sort of evens out honestly.

Yeah, so all the issues I saw yesterday are completely fixed. For a 7 hour game with presumably 1 or 2 hours of bugfixing post-release, this is a surprisingly elegant and complete game. You, friend, made snake into something new, and you deserve some congratulation for this accomplishment. I've literally played this game for like an hour total now, probably. The main thing I've learned is that missing the first pellet makes you feel really stupid.

Final high score in Hacker: 31 score 42 loop

@123seven3 Thank you again, this gave me a much appreciated self confidence boost. I feel you on missing the first pellet, happened way too much for me, too.

It is a very cool game, right now my record in hacker is 13 with 18 loops, very addictive, nice work!

This is fun to play, and I don't really have any problems with it.
Maybe some alternative music...
If there was some more polish on things like buttons and graphics, just so your eyes can be a bit more excited for even longer, this game would be perfect.
Good job!

I like the texts when you mute the music :)... hacker speed is the only way to play!

This was a lot more fund than I thought it was going to be. Got a very "zen" like feeling from playing, just relax and press the button. The graphics were at start a bit underwhelming but the diminishing cubes made a really nice pattern. Only made it as far as 41 loops unfortunately :-) Spot on the theme! Great work!

Nice Snake game, was confused by the block in the middle at first but realised your literally stuck in a loop and have to do laps while collecting. Top marks for nailing the theme.

Was confused at first, until I got that you can only go in a loop. Nice and simple idea!

Oh this was really cool! I like how you took a really old idea (Snake) and did your own new take on it (and made it fit with the theme)! Even though the graphics were simple, they did their job, and the gameplay felt nice.

the snake did it the right way, and I have no idea why I turned the music off, but I turned it on again immediately \o/

I liked the idea. Got 26 points in 24 loops on "Gamer". It was fun on gamer and hacker but noob was to slow in my opinion. It felt very laggy and sometimes the snake didn't turn when you didn't get the right moment... Still a fun game to play

Fun game! Good take on the theme. It's not clear that you're supposed to loop around center block at first and I kept thinking that it's skipping the inputs. Well done overall!

I enjoyed the concept of the game and the graphics suited it well I thought. The looping mechanic was great and I thought it was cool how you had to figure it out for yourself rather than having it explained to you. Overall the game was pretty relaxing, but the music was kind of grating after a short while. I appreciate the effort to include music though, even if it wasn't for me.

This was a fun game and it took me a moment to get the take on the theme but once I did I knew it was definitely well done! This was fun and the graphics were quite good for something made in the Compo. I think the controls were just a little unresponsive though and I couldn't turn as quickly as I would've liked but it never felt unfair. All in all, great job!

It's a classic! I liked how you fit this into the theme just by limiting the control. Good idea!
