Keep. The. Spike. Alive. by K4V0X

[raw]
made by K4V0X for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Controls : wasd / arrow keys for direction E to pick up G to drop the current item V to change the current item, or clear the slot

The goal is to keep the planted spike alive, by feeding it fuel cells. The enemies can't harm you, but the tricky terrain and the slippery puddles sure can. Dont get caught, and good luck.

EDIT : I forgot to set the itch.io project link to public. The game was in draft mode.

EDIT 2 : The original build is bugged, and will crash if you switch the item when you have none in your inventory. Beware!

The game features a pick up and forget system, as all the items have specific behaviours when picked up or selected. Whenever an item becomes red, it is no longer useable. There are 5 main items, with a few extra bonuses.

Paint Bucket : when dropped, creates a puddle of abrasive material. Restores normal friction levels, erasing the black ooze

Gun : when you pick it up, it starts shooting. Select another item if you want it to stop shooting.

Blade : damages any enemies it touches. Unfortunately, it has really low durability and damage, so consider it a last resort choice

Spikes : damages any enemies it touches when placed down. Unfortunately, it has really low durability, and a lot of mass, so it will slow down you significantly. Two-shots enemies;

Wall : nothing fancy, it just stops the enemies from coming any closer. Unfortunately, it has a lot of mass, so it will slow down you significantly.

Cell : the backbone of the game, it comes in 5 tiers of rarity, refueling the spike when placed in range. The spike will turn green when in range.

Thank you, Hanamigi, for your feedback;

Aww i can't play the game on itch :c
UPDATE: The game is downloadable now! I like the visual style you went for. Took me a moment movement wasnt delayed but rather on a grid of sorts. Was a fun little experience to figure out how to survive for as long as possible!

Looked really cute~ I do wish I could befriend the slimeys. Cant say I'm really sure what the powercells did tho, or the blade. but everything looked really cute :)

Nice graphics! I see some death stranding inspiration in the character design.
I tried the game three times, fed some powercells to the spike, picked up some items that I do not know how to use (E picks up, G drops, V swaps... how do I use the items?), and the enemies swarm you quite fast slowing down movement enormously. The game crashed twice while swappin items.

Oh god no. How did that happen? Do you think you can describe the circumstances in which your game crashed? I don't know if i can edit it to patch that, but i would like to know either way. @hanamigi

Cute graphics, cool audio, but the objective of the game, in my opinion, is not clear enough. I can't really be too harsh considering you only had 48h to do all of this :) I would suggest maybe having the tutorial up for longer, and a bit clearer. Good job on completing the compo!

Thank you for your kind words, stranger. Fun fact : the build that i submitted seems to have the double decay factor disabled. Normally, when the spike energy goes below the warning sign, it gets red and starts decaying more rapidly, increasing the decay factor permanently. Items also have a preeeety low hp and clip size, a decision that made sense when i made it, which has backfired horribly. Playtesting is important, i guess.

@k4v0x I managed to replicate it: you have to try and swap items when you have none. I grabbed some items and swapped them, then dropped them and tried swapping empty handed, and the game crashed.

In the meantime the game started to make sense. The biggest problem is the tutorial which omits important info concerning items, e.g. the gun shoots by itself, the sword deals damage to enemies, the bucket of paint can cover up the slime, the slime puddles are slippery and so on.
If you improved on that I think that the game would have a greater impact. I suggest adding some more info here on the ld46 game page.

Noted. Thank you for your feedback. I will try to solve the problem, and publish another bug free version. As i might have mixed up the builds, all the previous links will kept as is, and will be tagged accordingly.

A bit confusing, as the text at the start disappears quickly. I think the art was cool and creative and the theme was implemented quite well though.

As stated in the description, weapons fire automatically when fired. Just equip it and you are good to go. Drop everything you have in your inventory and press v to end the game.

@k4v0x Yes I have read that it should fire automatically, but it didn't. I guess I did not equip the weapon, there is probably something I did not understand

At firts I've struggled with the controls a bit, but the art and gameplay potential made me push forward (for which I'm really grateful!)
The slimes were dangerously cute :3

I really liked the art style in this; unique and cool! The gameplay was pretty good. I played a bit and liked the diversity in the level! Controls felt a bit heavy, and the player moved a bit after I finished pressing them. Overall, great job, keep it up, this game is cool!
