Henry and Alan by TheDoctorOfTime

[raw]
made by TheDoctorOfTime for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

So this one is basically a find the button game with moving platforms. Originally I was gonna focus on art then decided nah, so gameplay is fun right? Hopefully... Anyways I didn't add the story properly but the aim of the game is for Henry and Alan to become super close friends, if they dont interact they lose their connection and well, you lose (Don't let their connection Die woAh). You play as Henry and you have to jump around the platforms to reach Alan. In the spirit of the Jam I'll be uploading this barebones thing but Ill probably update it as a personal project sometime in the future. As a disclaimer you only lose if youre below 0 points and you only lose points if you fail to get Alan within the time limit, press 'esc' to head back to the menu.

In case you're lost the controls are purely ASWD/Up-Down-Left-Right (moving left/right and jumping only)

Its super basic and beginnery but I'm really proud of it, finished it right before my mom could rant about my curfew (finished at 1:30am ph) lmao. Not gonna win any awards but ngl saying you finished an entire game in 1 day is great for resumes. Enjoy it yalls.

P.S. about the music, don't record with your phone. You think it sounds ok, it isn't. And yes judge everything on here I know im updating it in the future but as a personal project, this is my full submission.

EDIT: DID SOME BUG FIXES A A A A A A A A A

Nice game and man those platforms go really fast but for me I think it was part of fun too haha

It's very challenging, but when I tried the second time, I clicked the "play" button, and the screen just flickered back to the start screen, which may be a bit wrong

Not a lot there gameplay wise but pleasant enough to play. I actually thought the music was fine (although I will caveat that by saying I am NOT a musician and have pretty simple tastes) and kind of complimented the laid back gameplay style.

It was deceptively difficult in parts, I think mainly (for me) due to the fact you dont conserve momentum from the platforms. Not a negative point, just something my brain had a bit of trouble with for some reason.

Nicely done. Although the game somethimes slows down a little and then everything moves very fast for about a second. Other than that its very well done!

Good job. It took me some time to understand that I wouldn't fall if the platform go outside of the screen.

nice game. It remember me the old times those donkey kong mini games. One thing I would like is to have a stronger gravity for the character, platforms are really fast, but the character don't feel as responsive as them.

The simplicity worked really well and I found myself playing longer then I expected trying to get further along. Nice job on finishing it. Also liked the different speeds of the platformers which added some nice difficulty. Was good to play for awhile and learn the best technique to jump from them.

@thedoctoroftime you could make it a litle shorter as I couldn't get to the highest platform due to a lack of skill so I just sat for minutes waiting

It seemed a little difficult for the player to keep up with the platforms - but besides that, it was a nice, simple game. The music was very relaxing - kind of wanted to just keep playing the game for the music, lol. :)

"Dang it. Dang it. Dang it." That was me, playing this game, narrowly missed platforms. It wasn't because of the game, but because of my inability to time my jumps right. This was difficult, but in a good way. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would at first. Very addictive. Nice work!

Nice platform game! I like the mood conveyed by the guitar music. I also like the idea that Henry may bump into higher platforms, which changes his trajectory. Maybe the movements are too wide for the space. But I enjoyed it anyway :)

I like it... well worth staying up until 1:30am to create it! As you noted it needs a bit more polish and balance, but, I think it has the makings of a fairly fun game. Also, nice work on the music. The loop is definitely too short, but, it's very relaxing to listen to as I'm jumping all around trying to find Alan.

I noticed an oddity. At times (maybe when Henry hits a platform or something?) Henry would seemingly do a 180. Instead of reading 'Henry' he'd be labeled 'yrneH'

Great Job!

@fussenkuh thanks yo! I liked the progression but ill make it longer probably and record it better haha! Also about Henry its cause the script i used for movement auto flips sprites, I originally wanted animated characters then I realize I'm not skilled enough to animate quickly,,, but my future version will have it! Thanks yo!

Fun game. I enjoyed the single screen platforming. There was a good difficulty on the platforming, but there never felt like I was at risk of losing. The minute timer just felt too long for the game.

Great job finishing this. Definitely feel proud with the work you have done. Completing a game in 48 hours is not a trivial task.

The game is great, I think adding a few sound effects would have made it a bit cooler, maybe increase the punishment when you can't reach Henry as well?

Chill game. I waited out the time left timer but it just reset to 1 minute and left me at the same level?

Neat little game! I like that it has a Title screen! As mentioned, when the timer drops to 0 it just goes back to 60.

@brokenvectors Thanks! I'll definitely do that when I update the game after the judging ends!

@enderr42 @god-colo thank you! I crammed it last minute but I'm proud of it!

@somniac @blobo oh sorry it might be a bug, or maybe you guys are in the highest level(?) cause you only lose points everytime you fail to get alan :O and you only go down a level if you go below a certain score range. It's a bit confusing and unbalanced but I promise I'll keep tweaking it till its something everyone can enjoy uwu

That's some nice platforming! The design of the level is pretty cool and the different speeds makes for some hard jumps. I found myself missing a platform on many occasion and blamed my skills rather than the game for the miss.
I kinda like that there's not that much pressure on the time side, but on the other hand some people could like that added incentive to go faster.

Nice little game you made here!

This is a fun and very well made game. I like both the music and the visual style. Jumping from platform to platform is a bit difficult, but it is okay, Overall is this a good time game. Well done.
