Impunity by Haustgeirr

A lightweight, hectic clicker game.

Instructions:

Your goal is to complete a project before you 'Joy' runs outs. The Joy bar at the top will deplete over time, and when cancelling projects (by clicking the red x). Joy is filled when you do some dev work on a project.

Controls: - Mouse - interact, click buttons and drag panels about - Esc - pause

This is a bit of a personal project for me, as it describes a state I find myself in consistently. I struggle with larger projects, eventually ending up hating them and abandoning them. I have also struggled with Game Jams in the past, my entry for GMTK Jam 2020 was broken and unfinished. So I set a goal to make a super small game, and try to complete it - not desperately hammer it in at 1-minute to deadline - and as I write this, there are 3h 27m to deadline. I'm very happy about that. I spent more time than usual polishing, and although I didn't really get very far with the audio I'm pleased over all.

Thanks so much for playing my game, and I hope you can take something away from it.

This is super cool! It's crazy how addictive these clicker games can be, at least for me ... Cool game, very well.

I love the art style and whilst this kind of game is not my kind of thing I did enjoy the time I spent on it

the overall mood/meaning of this really came through, and i think it's a great project even though clickers aren't usually my thing ^^

The art is simple but pretty. The gameplay is too easy, you could add something more than just point and click. Nice try though!

@nectanebo Ah, thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I wanted to really limit the scope of this one as I've struggled to get everything done in time in the past. It's tough to find the right balance!

Felt like doing a game jam all over again :D The art is really well done and sound design feels really satisfying!

It feels a bit barebones but nicely done!

A great simple little game. The simple art style helps to make the game easy to play and I love the charming little pixel art style. It is satisfying to hit that dev button over and over again. This is a really creative take on the idea of being stuck in a loop and one I think most game devs can identify with.

You clearly have a complicated relationship with the Unity editor...

An interesting mechanic that encourages you to start new projects to stay alive, which only gives you more to do down the line. I got a 92%?

A simple game, but well polished. I enjoyed the look of it a lot. Maybe a bit difficult with a trackpad.

Woah, managed to get 92%, and this game pretty much summarizes the game dev journey! Also your art was really great!

@loig I never even considered a trackpad - I'm sorry! Thanks for the feedback.

@haustgeirr no problem, I would not be expecting it (in particular in such a short dev time). It was more kind of a joke, justifying for me sucking at the game :smirk:

Thats deep! Love it!
Expecially idea that each project gives you less and less joy to the end =) Thats pretty depressive

Well there is not many things to tell about gameplay as it is really simple click, but still the placement management is kind of amusing.
But I have to congrats you for this, I read your introduction and it seems it was difficult to finish your projects in the past. This one is perfectly functional, and is really pretty. I really like the style.
Next step do this again without the jam as a motivation :)

+I want to add it made me laugh, when you are submerged with windows it's quite funny as its so true :D

Loved the idea. Pretty accurate on what a game dev is

I laughed a lot when I saw you can't wrap up a project at all, 100% accurate.

I couldn't finish a single project, but I guess that was the point, sad times. Funny meta idea to make a project about the struggles of finishing project. I think that's something a lot of us can relate to.

On my first few playthroughs, I didn't realise that you could create more than one project at a time, and kept only getting to 83%. I had to read the comments and check the screenshots again to realise I had missed an important aspect of the game. Part of the problem I think was that the new project window spawns on top of the project manager window, so I thought that was all there was to it. Making the windows offset a bit so that the new project button is still visible after creating the first window would fix that. Also, colorizing the title bars, perhaps even highlighting them when you hover over them and changing the cursor could help make it clearer that you can move the windows.

I like the out of memory mechanic when you try to create more than 5 windows. It was funny, but also stopped me from trying to cheese the game by abandoning my current projects without penalty. On my last attempt I tried closing projects as they were returning less "joy" and managed to get to 95%. I'm not sure if the game is winnable, but I'd like to see the penalty for closing projects being decreased slightly, so that you can get to 100% (unless that is already possible and I'm just bad).

The sound effects were very satisfying too, just what I expect from a clicker game.

The game was very fun and I tried A lot only to get to 95% max, A very fun game and this is totally relatable, I love how the risk vs reward is set in the game. The penalty for quitting a project was way too high, and I wish we could complete the project past 1, instead of just abandoning or closing them.

The sound effects were on point and the most successful strategy for me was to start a new project based on the audio cue we get on an exiting project, makes it go like a chain and was extremely satisfying to play!

Congratulations on the entry and I wish you best of luck for your future projects!

It's really hard to put some rating for that. First of all because for me, as for a guy with A LOT unfinished projects, it's also very personal. But from other perspective aside of the idea there is almost nothing left, unfortunately. Would like to have more options and less intense time pressure, but probably it won't fit the idea. Dunno.

However I do like the art and the idea. It feels very personal, and I guess it should be. So from that perspective well done, mate.
