Fire Saver by Vollfeiw

[raw]
made by Vollfeiw for Ludum Dare 46 (COMPO)

Fire Saver is a quick top-down "arena survival" where you have to keep fire alive by putting wood on it, but in order to get wood you have to chop down tree and if you chop them too fast, you can't grow other one because you won't have any seed. So yeah, keep some of them alive too, just a small tips.

There's also a multi mode where you have to be selfish to get your own fire alive, but have to steal things and maybe try to bother a bit your opponent, last fire on fire win.

About the author: I'm fairly new to game dev (2 months) and this is obviously my first game jam, and this is litteraly an old dream becoming true. I learned a lot during these two last days, and i had a lot of fun coding this, so, i'll hope you will have fun too trying this out :)

Wow! This game is very well executed, I messed around with it and here are my notes:

**What I liked**
- brilliant idea, engaging and also fits the Ludum Dare theme
- entertaining mechanics, not too complex and keeping the player focused
- chill loop music adding the right atmosphere, nice touch with sound effects

**What could be improved**
- sometimes interacting with objects were difficult, especially on screen edges
- when fire was low it was too dark, this is more of preference but it felt really snow bally. When fire got to certain stage it was difficult to get back because of the dark

Overall this was really well-made game in such a short time. Nice work!

My best time was about 4mins 30 seconds, but I think I could do better with a few more tries.

I liked the ways I needed to manage resources in this game. Wood, seeds, and enemies altogether made for some interesting decisions (choosing where to plant a seed, trying to knock enemies into trees to make them grow, and making sure I had more wood coming in than seeds). I found it difficult to aim where the object I hit landed, especially when objects got trapped in the dark corners where I couldn't see them.

Nice job on your first jam!

Great graphics and pretty fun gameplay. I did find some of the mechanics confusing. I would have expected for cutting the trees to automatically help with the fire or maybe me carrying the logs over. Given that they are such a scarce resource in the game it was frustrating to try to aim the logs into the fire. It also took me a bit to realize that I could "aim" the enemies by looking at their lines. It seemed a little random. I think it would have been nice if they had rotated 360 or at least 180 each time. I think ideally you'd have at least some change of always knocking them where you wanted them to go. So it's more about timing skill than chance.

Having the directions in the game would be nice. Even after reading the directions I wasn't confident that hitting the water into the trees was helping. Maybe there is some better feedback there like making the tree grow immediately or some sound effect. I think the game could use some balancing to make it easier early on and then ramping up the difficulty as you progress.

Really cool idea for the interactions with enemies. I did find that the aiming was not precise enough, which made it difficult to hit the trees with water and the fire with logs. Moving just a little big drastically changed where you were aiming. I did find a bug where if you press escape and go back to the main menu, if you start a new game nothing will spawn in and you need to refresh the page. Overall, well done!

Thanks everyone for feedbacks ! Really helpful, i will work on an aim assist i guess, that would probably help me out in the future, and could probably make that game easier.

@nicksmaddog thanks for the bug report, might check that out.

@slimbun You don't "kill" monsters, you have to use it as water to grow tree, and "kill" fire. Somehow, i didn't got the time to implement fire enemies that was supposed to get big tree down to increase difficulty at some point. That's probably the easiest thing i could have done to balance the game and somehow, i focused more on a multiplayer request i got from early playtester.

Loved the way of how you interact with the items the same way

Hard to get a hang of, but it was solid, i like how you can aim where everything will fly when you hit it with the line coming from them, i did not realize when they where indicating at first. Pretty hard to see anything when it starts getting really dark. When i got a hang of it, i had some fun haha.

Nice little game. I think that all the essential stuff that makes a game fun was there. Good work! I didn't really know if me chopping down the trees did something to extend or enlarge the fire or not? I would have liked to get some feedback while playing regarding that. The sound effects really sets the mood in the game.

Hm, super cool action game. It's very cool idea of water than can be your friend or enemy. And generally interacting with objects. Great concept! It's currently my favorite game in this game jam ;)

Really cool and simple idea! Those are hard to come by during game jams  You even had time to make a local multiplayer version? I am impressed! Congrats on you first game jam btw

@tim-eriksen I didn't really had time for local multiplayer, i loosed way too much time for this, and I didn't even had time to balance it or play test it. That was a good experience for sure, but i had so much thing missing in the solo game just because i made that multiplayer, I sadly had to make a choice, and I think that was the bad one ^^
