I have to admit that I found the mechanics to be a bit cryptic, maybe a couple of instructions to guide the player at the beginning of the experience could be a good thing to add. Although I admit that I'm the first one to leave instructions till last minute in a Game Jam. :see_no_evil:
Very cool entry overall! Super brave to do it as a first!
The control scheme is strange, I would have liked something much different (X to wait, Z to make next movement a dash, move on arrow?).
edit: I should have watched the gifs before playing! My bad.
Overall though, the game was pretty good, I like the graphics, though the obstacles were a bit hard to spot. There's also a neat optical illusion in the graphics, if you stare at a point it looks like there's dots on the intersection points of the grid. That's called the [Herman grid](https://www.illusionsindex.org/i/hermann-grid) apparently. Even tho my gameplay tactics felt a bit cheap, it was still fun trying to keep the fire alive, and the unpredictability meant you always needed a backup plan. This strategy didn't work forever either, perhaps I could've used the dash to recover, but I didn't use it enough for it to be a consideration. The fire was also very well animated. Congrats on your game!
I really liked playing this, though. Maybe you should consider adding a timer in? That way you can actually compare how long you kept the fire alive with other people.
